"Sighh…now I am finally alone" I said and a long, heavy breath left my lungs as I sank down onto the living-room couch. The soft cushions accepted my weight. Morning light still filled the quiet house through the half-open curtains. Outside, the street sounded empty. Inside, the only noise was the soft tick of the wall clock and the faint leftover smell of the breakfast Ezra and I had shared.
I picked up my phone and unlocked the screen. WhatsApp opened straight to Sonny's chat. Two new messages sat waiting at the top, unread until now.
"Hey… where are you, sweetheart?"
"Has Ezra left for work yet 🤔?"
I stared at the words for a long moment. My thumb hovered over the keyboard. God forbid me… what should I even reply? And more importantly, how should I reply so he doesn't suspect anything? Do I really have no other choice but to play along?
The question circled in my head while the silent house waited.
