Chapter 89 - How winners lift trophies

BO4 (2 - 1) VFB 76th minute

Che watches as Stuttgart press with their attack while passing the around and Bayer weren't planning on attacking and have decided to defend.

Speidel gets the ball down the right wing, and he passes towards the striker on the edge of the box.

The striker barely controls the ball and the Halil kick the loose ball off him but the ball doesn't go far and lands on the attacking midfielder's feet.

He grabs the ball and looks towards goal, with no time left he forces a shot, but it has no power and is easily stopped by the keeper.

The keeper gets up and distributes the ball quickly by throwing it out towards the right winger who's running ahead on his own.

He allows the ball to bounce in front him before pushing it forward. Three of Bayer's attackers against two of Stuttgart's center backs.

The winger passes the ball towards the striker and the striker runs with it. With both wingers aside from him.

He passes the ball to the left winger who gives it a slight push forward and gets to it before the defender does.

He shoots with his left foot and ball rolls past the keeper's feet as he barely gets it and rolls behind him towards the net.

The players go to celebrate their third goal and again, they bring out their dancing. Everyone on the team drops their head.

Che shakes his head watching his teammates fall into despair.

BO4 (3 - 1) VFB 80th minute

Scorer: Ivan Massek assisted by Berkan Ermec

The game restarts and nothing changes between the two teams, Stuttgart try every single attack they could give but nothing works.

They started getting desperate and tried taking shots from outside the box, even holding the ball for too long.

While Bayer calmly cruised their way towards the final whistle. In what felt like the longest 14 minutes of their lives. The referee finally blows the final whistle.

Some player gets to their knees while other fall down, Bayer players ran towards each other celebrating.

Che just sat there as his heart sank into the chair he sat on, he couldn't move. He looks at the Bayer players celebrating and looks towards his teammates.

And he hated that feeling of watching someone else be happy during his loss. He also realized that the faces they were making were still the same.

They face they're making right now were the same face they were making before Che got subbed off.

Leon approaches him and pats him on his shoulder. He looks up and the two of them look at each other.

Leon takes a seat next to him as the two of them watch the Bayer players celebrate.

''Leon...''

''Yeah.''

''Am I wrong to want more than this?''

''In what way?''

''I want to win... and winning a lot. Is that too much to ask.''

''Never.''

''Then why does it seem like it's a lot to ask for some people?''

''I don't know, maybe they're not like you and me.''

Che didn't reply he kept looking forward and started thinking about how hard it could be to find people like him. People who wanted to win.

Leon stands up and follows the team as they go to collect their silver medals. Che joins them and they collect it, and the coach tells them to watch Bayer as they lift the trophy.

The Bayer players celebrate as the fans roar at them lifting the trophy, they celebrate, and the Stuttgart players clap their hands before going to the tunnel.

Che sits at the locker room as coach is addressing the team, but he can't hear a thing that he's saying. The only thing he can hear right now is his broken heart.

He didn't know whether to cry or be angry, but he just wasn't happy. The players clap their hands, and he finally wakes up and joins them.

On the bus drive home, he sat their next to Leon but didn't say a word. The whole bus was quiet; some were on their phones while others were listening to music.

Leon wants to speak to him, but he doesn't know what to say.

''What are you doing tomorrow? Wanna chill out?''

''Nah, I'll probably just sleep.''

''Come on man, are you going to be sad forever? This is football there will always be a winner and a loser, and this time it just happened to be us.''

Che just looked at him after he said that he wasn't surprised Leon would have that kind of mentality.

He wondered how many players on his team had those same thoughts, that it just happened to be them to lose this time.

Whether they ever blame themselves for losing like that or do they blame fate.

''You know, I've lost a lot in my whole life Che... but every time I've lost, I've always decided to push myself to the next level.

So, think of this as that situation for you. Think of it as something that should teach you towards being a better footballer.''

Che still not talking just nods.

He actually agrees with Leon on that, he learnt a lot from that game as a player. And he hopes that next season will be different for him.

But as for now, he should focus on becoming a better player for his team.
