Chapter 120 - Their Approaching Evolution

Gunfire echoed from the now destroyed entrance of the New York Public Library as the Red Blood Raiders continued shooting the incoming zombie hoard. The shound of cheap AK-47s echoed as they were shot since Raven robbed the gang of their premium guns weeks prior in the subway vault her father had. Bang. Bang. Bang. Dozens of undead collapsed under the hail of bullets, but for every zombie they sent to hell, two more moved forward to take their place, their snarls were only drowned out by the sound of the rumbling black tank in front of them. The Hellraiser continued its approach, as it's caterpillar tracks climed the stone steps leading up to the giant hole blown into the library wall that used to be the front doors.

Adam Carter stood on the library's second-floor balcony, looking down in disbelief. His lips parted slightly as the Hellraiser continued climbing the massive concrete steps like they are nothing. "No fucking way…" he yelled, eyes widening in shock.

Then, without warning, the sound of loud polka music stopped. The abrupt silence struck like a guitar cord. The zombies, confused by the silence for only a moment, paused in their chase of the tank until the sound of gunfire, coming from the Red Blood Raiders, caught their attention. The horde shifted their anger from Alara and Raven. As every head turned. Undead eyes locking onto the sound of the gunfire.

They abandoned the Hellraiser as they charged the Raiders thinking in their undead minds. "Who the hell are you shooting at?"

More zombies climbed up the destroyed concrete steps, pouring into the open hole in the library's front door. The Hellraiser halted just behind them, letting their zombie vanguard of undead clear the path for them.

Inside, Jimmy screamed over the sound of gunfire. "Get your asses in position! Fire at their heads, you idiots! Or take out their legs—no, not the arms—oh my God just shoot in the right direction, you idiots!"

A few Raiders near the back library wall turned and fired straight into the drywal on their left. Jimmy turned around, yelling. "You morons! Not the drywall! FACE FRONT!"

One of them paused, blinking slowly. "Ohh… that makes so much sense now."

He turned and started shooting at the right wall.

Jimmy slapped his hand against his forehead in frustration, his face twisted with rage. "I'm surrounded by drug-fueled idiots."

Ignoring them, he turned and joined the gunfight, emptying clip after clip into the zombie wave. The first floor was a warzone of screams, bullets, and fresh food. From above, a few hundred Raiders on the second floor fired down at the first floor in desperation. But it was just not enough. The undead kept coming, overwhelming them, leaping onto bookcases, and toppling book shelves as they climbed up towards their prey.

Inside the Hellraiser, Alara watched through the a cctv surveillance monitor, her head moved thoughtfully. "You know," she said, still driving casually, "We should tie a few of these zombies to the outside of our tank. Using them as meat shields. They'll soak up bullets that hit the Hellraiser and even explode on impact with gunfire and bombs."

Raven turned to Alara, stunned into silence for a second before her face lit up with joy. "That's genius Alara! Their blood will contaminate everything nearby. If even one explodes next to an enemy, they will get infected. Turning into a zombie in seconds. We'll save that trick for the Yellow Fish Raiders. Making them eat their own gang members how vicious is that."

Just then, outside the Hellraiser, a few zombies jumped several feet through the air, landing on screaming Raiders and dragging them down from the library's second floor.

Raven's eyes became serious as she thought. "The zombies are starting to evolve. That kind of jumping means some of them are nearing their Level One Evolutions."

This is a shift has been expecting for a while now. When zombies start evolving, so would humans. And that means her playing field will change. Raven gets to become more creative with how she kills.

"This means I get to make more than just tanks. I can use plants and trees. Giant man-eating trees. Surprise man eating roots that expolode from the ground below people's feet. It will be mass carnage in bloom...!"

Inside the library, Jimmy barely had time to react as one of the airborne zombies slammed into his body, knocking him against a nearby stone pillar. He screamed as the zombies claws tore into his arms.

"AHH! ADAM! HELP M—"

Crunch.

A pair of jaws bit down on his throat. Blood gushing from the wound as he gurgled, body convulsing before collapsing under the zombies.

The zombies tore him apart in seconds. It was almost as if they were punishing him personally for the torment of the polka music that led them here. They devoured Jimmy like a group of men eats at a buffet.

Back in the head librarian's office, Adam Carter stood before a dusty old surveillance monitor, surrounded by five of his men. The feed glitched with static and white grain showing zombies overwhelming the lower levels, screams echoed up the staircase to his office, the sound of gunfire fading rapidly.

Adam's jaw clenched in fright, his knuckles whitening around the grip of his gun. The walls shook as another explosion riped through the library. He could hear the panicked shouts of his men dying. The Red Blood Raiders are being overwhelmed.

"This is a fucking trap set up by the people in that tank knowing I cant run away with the library surrounded by zombies." he said, eyes still locked on the screen in panic.
