The footsteps grew louder, and Maya trembled even more. The echoes of armor clinking—and then the entrance gate slammed open. They were inching closer…
Nat turned to Kallin and grabbed his hand firmly.
"Don't say that now," he whispered. "We will have time." His voice cracked.
But Kallin was no child who believed in the words of an adult. He knew danger was looming and so inevitable.
"Let my last words to you be the truth."
Nat turned, his eyes thick with pain, and his hands trembled, but he held on tightly.
"No... no, this isn't the end. We still have time. I will fight; I will get you out... I—"
"You won't," Kallin whispered calmly, his eyes never leaving those of the beta.
"You will die, and I will be killed... so why not say it?"
Nat's eyes burned with angry tears. His body trembled, but he dared not step back.
"Don't say such... not when I can't keep you safe," his voice cracked.
