Chapter 73 - Impenetrable Fortress

A few days ago, General Bobby and his army were stationed at Hopeshire Fort, one of humanity's last defenses.

By the ocean, the fortress was on an elevated flat land of sand.

In a room, General Bobby sat on a desk and studied his notes on the battle tactics of The Evil Cyborgs. He was older, and his moustache was longer, reaching his collar bone.

A soldier frantically entered the room and approached General Bobby. He sweated profusely. "Sir, I have a dire report," he announced.

"Read it out for me," General Bobby ordered.

The soldier read, "An immense army of cyborgs was sighted northwest. We believe it's the main force. They have been marching towards our fortress."

General Bobby paused and placed his notes down. He sternly asked, "How far are they?"

The soldier trembled in fear of what's to come and answered, "They are a few kilometers away, sir."

General Bobby closed the map on his desk and stood up. His elemental sword was strapped to his waist. He approached his soldier and stared at him. "You're new to my army, right," he inquired.

The soldier gulped and nervously nodded.

General Bobby patted his shoulder and urged, "Be brave." He stepped out of the room.

The soldier glanced back and took a deep breath.

Outside, General Bobby stood high in one of the many buildings. He gazed down at his army as they relaxed or prepared. He shouted, "Attention!"

General Bobby's army gave him their full attention.

"Listen! The main army of The Evil Cyborgs are coming! We must ready the defenses of Hopeshire Fort! This fort will remain impenetrable," General Bobby proclaimed.

The soldiers saluted and obeyed. They, quick on their feet, hurried.

On that afternoon, General Bobby stared at the horizon from the fortress' outside walls. He narrowed his eyes. He observed closer and confirmed, "So, you brought your entire army for this fort. Well, I won't make it easy."

Down below, his soldiers set up barricades and traps to slow down the cyborgs until reinforcements arrive.

Past Starkport City, The Evil Cyborgs, thousands of them, stretched throughout the horizon. Their march conveyed their fury and their wicked motives.

A giant blue robot, Commander Number 3, led them forward. He no longer wore his cloak. His blue mechanical body was shown.

That night, Commander Number 3 and The Evil Cyborgs stood in front of Hopeshire Fort.

As they surrounded the fortress, Commander Number 3 sneered and declared, "Tonight, we seek another great victory. Cyborgs, invade the fortress!"

The Evil Cyborgs ran past him and charged towards the fortress. They destroyed a barricade and rushed through.

From the fortress' walls, artillery fired relentlessly.

"Number 50 to Number 500, stay back and fire at the artillery," Commander Number 3 ordered.

The cyborgs, Number 50 to Number 500, shot back with their lasers.

The others persevered.

Among them was Number 4. He looked down and noticed something odd. He exclaimed, "Huh? This sand. It's being held up by something. Comrades! Fall Back!" He retreated and turned around.

Suddenly, the sand sank below The Evil Cyborgs, and a deep trench appeared around the fortress.

Many fell, and the trench separated The Evil Cyborgs into two groups.

"We can jump over," one of the cyborgs informed.

As they jumped over the trench, The Evil Cyborgs were bombarded by the artillery.

Inside the fortress, General Bobby commanded, "Let's incinerate them!"

In an instant, massive flames came out of the trench and spewed. They rapidly melted any nearby cyborgs.

In realization, Commander Number 3 was perplexed. "I have underestimated the enemy. Cyborgs! Retreat," he urged.

However, half of The Evil Cyborgs were stuck inside the wall of fire. Trapped, they were mercilessly massacred by the artillery with extreme precision and accuracy.

The rest of The Evil Cyborgs successfully retreated.

"This general is different. Whoever leads this fort might be a worthy adversary," Commander Number 3, suffering his first loss, recognized.

In Hopeshire Fort, General Bobby stood in front of his army. "Well done, everyone! We have successfully defended the fortress. Rest for now, for it's now a battle of attrition," he announced.

His soldiers cheered and celebrated.

The Evil Cyborgs created enough distance and rested.

Number 4 checked on the wounded.

"Ow, ow, ow," a male cyborg cried and desperately shook his head. His silver hair flailed around, and he winced in pain.

"Stop moving, brother," a female cyborg urged. She wiped blue blood off her brother's arm with a towel. She had blue eyes and long silver hair.

"Number 6 and Number 7. How are you, two, holding up," Number 4 asked.

"Horrible! It hurts," Number 7, the male cyborg, repeated. His blue eyes were watery.

"Don't be a crybaby," Number 6, the female cyborg, demanded and smacked him. She glanced at Number 4 and reassured, "We'll be fine. I can't say the same for those despicable humans. They will pay for hurting so many of us."

Number 4 nodded and questioned, "Where's your boyfriend?"

Number 6 pointed and informed, "Number 5 should be with Number 8 and Number 9 over there. Number 9 was in a bad shape."

Number 4 thanked her and moved on. He urgently approached Number 5 and Number 8.

Number 5 and Number 8 cradled Number 9 on the ground. Their faces darkened, realizing their grim situation.

Number 9 was motionless. He had holes in him, and his wires hung out.

"Number 9," Number 4 shouted and stood over him.

"He was shot multiple times by the artillery," Number 5 asserted.

"He didn't make it," Number 8 whimpered.

Number 4 fell to his knees and trembled with anguish. Over the last three years, Number 9 was his best friend. "Do you know his final words," he queried.

Number 8 looked at Number 5.

Number 5 divulged, "Freedom."

Number 4 slouched over the corpse and gritted his teeth. He grieved.

Just then, Commander Number 3 loomed over them. He assured, "Number 9 will be fine."

Number 4, Number 5, and Number 8 were surprised by the declaration.

"What do you mean, commander," Number 5 sought to know.

"I just talked to my superior. Apparently, he had a secret lab inside that fort. If we raid it successfully, we can bring dead cyborgs back to life with new bodies, and our conquest will be guaranteed," Commander Number 3 revealed.

Number 4, Number 5, and Number 8 were more bewildered than before.

If Hopeshire Fort falls, what will it mean for The Evil Cyborgs and the rest of the world?
