Chapter 1 - Chapter One

"Welcome home, my love. How was your business trip?" Lisa asked her husband, Tony Williams.

"Ok," he responded with a cold expression on his face. Walking past her, he dumped his coat on the floor.

Lisa felt a moment of disappointment. Her husband had never been this cold towards her. Could it be something that happened to him? She questioned herself.

She couldn't help but notice the distance, the coldness and the lack of attention from her husband the moment he entered the house.

What was going on?.

He stopped midway and muttered, "Lisa, we need to talk."

Lisa's eyes widened in confusion.

"Talk?" She questioned.

"Yes, I don't think our marriage is working anymore. Here are divorce papers, sign them," he bluntly said.

His expression was cold and unfamiliar. He handed her the paper sheets, and her hands shook as she took them and scanned them.

Her eyes were beaming with tears, and her ever-cheerful smile had turned into a frown.

She couldn't believe what she was seeing. For sure, they were divorce papers!

"What?! Out of nowhere? We have made this marriage work for so many years, we love each other." Her voice croaked. "R-Right?"

"I'm sorry, but this is just how it has to be." He said. "I don't want this to be more complicated than it already is."

"But… but it can't be," she sobbed. 'It's so out of the blue,' she thought.

"Did I do something wrong?"

"It's not you, it's me. This is just not working anymore," he said before going up the stairs.

Lisa was devastated; she was determined to find out what would be the reason her husband had made such a drastic step.

The day passed with a cold breeze, an empty space between Tony and Lisa. She couldn't call anyone, not even her best friend Alice, for comfort. She was set to deal with this alone.

She loved Tony; he was her high school crush and turned into her husband, her soulmate. What could possibly be the reason that he would want to divorce? She wondered in thought.

Lisa sat on a chair on the balcony when she saw Tony get into his black Mercedes-Benz. It was late in the evening.

'Where is he going?' She thought. 'Let me follow him and see what he's up to, I may get some answers.'

She quietly waited till he drove out and took her car, one she hardly used, so that Tony couldn't suspect that he was being followed.

He stopped by a very expensive restaurant, the place where they first went on a date after they got married.

A young woman in a red dress walked out of the restaurant and hugged Tony, giving him a peck on the cheek. The hug took a second too long, and Lisa felt her heart sink.

"Tony is cheating?!" She muttered quietly.

She felt tears running down her cheeks.

So, that was the reason he was divorcing her! He found someone else!

She couldn't spend a second there and drove off.

She parked her car near an alley down the street, a few minutes from home.

She let out a blood-curdling scream as she couldn't help it but sob uncontrollably.

"HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME! I LOVED YOU!" She yelled in her car.

Lisa couldn't help but break down; her husband, her love, had betrayed her in such a horrible way.

She sat and wondered what she could have done wrong for him to do this. Flooded with thoughts, she decided to head back home, but her car couldn't start.

She checked and discovered there was no fuel in the car. "Damn it! How could I have missed that?" She exclaimed.

Left with no option, Lisa decided to walk home and hoping to retrieve the car later.

The streets were silent, a cold breeze brushed against her cheeks. It was dark, and she did not put on anything warm.

"What's a beautiful lady like you doing in the streets alone?" A strange, manly voice echoed from the street corners.

Another man walked out with a knife in his hand. Lisa couldn't help but notice how dangerous these men seemed. She tried to run but stumbled and fell on her heels.

The men chuckled darkly.

" Leave me alone!" She yelled.

"We won't hurt you, we just want to play with you," one of the men smirked.

Lisa felt shivers down her spine and let out a scream when the men started running towards her.

Suddenly, a black sleek car sped straight towards her, and the door opened. A tall, muscular man in a black suit walked out.

'What's going on here?' She thought. Her ankle was badly bruised and she couldn't stand or walk.

"Get lost!" The man spoke. His voice was calm yet deep, it commanded authority. His posture oozed masculinity.

"Or what?" One of the men spoke up, he quickly pointed the knife at her throat.

"Is she your girlfriend or something? She is ours now," the men spoke, snickering.

The strange man in the black suit took off his jacket and threw it. "Don't make me regret what I'll do to you both."

The other man tried to attack, but he was defeated effortlessly, and his body dropped to the ground.

"What did you do to him?" The man with the knife trembled.

"The same thing I'll do to you," he calmly responded, fully taking charge of the situation.

The goon ran away like he had fire on his pants. He threw the knife away and disappeared into the dark streets.

"Thank you so much for saving me," Lisa thanked the strange man with tears dropping from her eyes.

She could have been killed by those goons.

"It's ok," the man responded. "I'm Liam Styles, but you can call me Mr Styles."

She looked at him through the car lights and gasped. He was handsome in all his glory. She couldn't show any emotion other than thankfulness towards him.

"Do you mind if I give you a ride home? It's not safe here." He offered.

Lisa hesitated for a while; she didn't know whether to trust this stranger, if he was worse than the goons who almost attacked her or if he was generous. She ended up agreeing because this strange man, Liam Styles, saved her life.

He drove her home. The ride was silent; they did not speak to each other, nor did he ask her name.

He was a box of mystery that Lisa couldn't understand. But she was glad someone saved her from such a situation.

"Thank you so much, Mr. Styles," she said, breaking the silence after he reached outside her gate.

"You're welcome, but why do you seem so down? Did I say something wrong?" He asked, concerned..

"It's a long story," she replied as she tucked a strand of loose hair behind her ear. Recalling what she had witnessed earlier, a scoff escaped her lips.

"I have all night," he insisted.

"I lost something very dear to my heart to another, after years of building our bond. That jerk decides to cheat on me and leave me just like that," she replied, tears rolling down her face.

She didn't mean to cry in front of this stranger, but for some reason, the tears kept falling on their own.

"Oh my, I'm so sorry." He hugged her and felt how fragile she was. Breaking down in front of a total stranger

"You probably think I'm being stupid by crying this much," she sniffled.

"Hey, I'm not judging you." He said, releasing her from the hug. "I'm sorry for hugging you. It felt like you needed it."

Lisa's face burned. How could she get lost in her emotions and let a stranger hug her like that?

She thanked the man and stepped out of the car.

As he drove off, she stood by the gate.

She watched as the car drove off, and then stared at Tony's huge mansion, and everything dawned on her; everything she had ever had with him was now going to shatter like glass.

Their love, their marriage.

She steadily walked into the mansion with the help of her maid, who received her by the gate and into the house, with no sign of Tony.

He was probably still with his mistress.

Her heart sank to the pits of her stomach.

"So this is how he repays our love!" She sighed, her heart shattering to a thousand pieces. .
