Chapter 71 - Shadows in the Rearview

The late afternoon light painted the parking lot in a golden haze as we walked out of the mall, our arms heavy with shopping bags. Roxy had insisted on buying nearly everything I tried on — dresses, tops, pajamas even a few pairs of shoes I swore I didn't need. Jackson and Matteo were loaded down like pack mules, muttering jokes about starting a delivery service.

And yet, despite all the laughter and the teasing, my thoughts wouldn't leave that dressing room. The faint scent of her perfume still clung to me — warm, sweet, maddening. Every time my fingers brushed the fabric of the new dress I was wearing, I remembered her hands helping me with the zipper, her hands holding my waist down to hold me still and prevent me from moving away from her, her calm voice trying to keep me composed while I stood there, flustered and breathless as well as embarrassed.

I couldn't get it out of my head.
