-Roxy Delgado:
The road wound into darkness, the hum of the engine the only sound filling the silence between us. The sky had long swallowed the sun, leaving the forest on either side of the car drenched in shadows. My hand stayed on the wheel, the other still wrapped around Sloane's trembling fingers. I didn't let go — not once.
Every few seconds, I glanced toward her. She hadn't said a word since we left that area. Her eyes were still wide, her lips pressed tightly together as she stared out the window, like she was afraid the men might appear from the trees at any second.
I hated that look on her face. The fear. The trembling.
It made something inside me twist — guilt, anger, and something else I didn't dare name.
I'd promised to protect her, but tonight she'd seen too much. She'd been dragged into my world — a world full of danger and darkness — and I could see the cracks forming in her calm facade.
