With measured steps, Arthas gracefully retreated, the jet-black greatsword, Frostmourne, reappearing in his hand. The heavy blade dragged along the rooftop's edge, leaving a frozen trail in its wake.
A biting chill emanated once more, subtly confronting the enraged Riser.
Boom!
An intricately structured, diamond-shaped ice shield bloomed before Arthas. Riser's probing fire blast dissipated harmlessly.
His face betraying no surprise, Riser swept his flames outward.
His fiery wings trembled and spread, instantly transforming him into a streak of fire that shot towards Arthas.
Normally, anyone would avoid confronting the might of a Phoenix head-on. Yet, facing Riser's attack, Arthas made a decision that baffled everyone present.
He showed no intention of dodging, stepping forward to meet the attack with a direct clash!
Arthas raised Frostmourne, a greatsword nearly his own height, and swung it straight down at the charging Phoenix.
Calamitous frost, unleashed!
Riser's pupils dilated as the massive black blade, along with an indescribable wave of frost, rapidly expanded.
A flicker of surprise crossed his usually calm eyes; he felt his flames weakening.
Under the onslaught of the terrifying frost, the flames on his body were rapidly fading.
Impossible… how could frost possibly freeze my flames?! The Phenex family's pride will not fall!
The distance between them seemed negligible. But before Arthas's blade fell and Riser reached him, the school building beneath them, unable to withstand the clash of ice and fire, crumbled into ruin.
This sudden event momentarily destabilized both combatants, sending them plummeting. Riser, able to fly, calmly spread his fiery wings, while Arthas fell straight down.
"Die!" Seizing this perfect opportunity, Riser, having stabilized himself in mid-air, roared, his flames turning almost golden as he charged at Arthas.
The situation instantly turned extremely unfavorable.
Arthas, falling and hampered by the greatsword's weight, couldn't turn. Sheathing the divine artifact would be incredibly unwise.
He's got him!
Just as this triumphant thought crossed Riser's mind, he saw a smile play on Arthas's lips.
You really think… I can't wield my greatsword because it's too heavy?
He didn't hear the words, but understood from Arthas's lip movements.
Riser was horrified to see the black greatsword, which seemed to be pulling Arthas down, suddenly flung directly at him.
He threw his divine artifact at me?!
By the time Riser registered the action, the enormous greatsword was before his face.
Unable to dodge, he could only raise his fists defensively.
"Aaaaaah!!!"
With Riser's scream, Arthas landed lightly, then silently looked up at the sky.
The blade was deeply embedded in Riser's arm, nearly severing his hand. A terrifying wave of cold emanated from Frostmourne, assaulting Riser's soul.
"Aaaaaah!!!"
Screaming again, Riser made a shocking move; he violently severed his own arm.
The detached arm, still clutching Frostmourne, flew through the air, freezing into fragments within moments.
Riser, in immense pain, plummeted to the earth.
His arm instantly regenerated. Riser climbed out of the crater his body had made.
Physical wounds were nothing; regeneration was simple for a Phoenix. Riser had made this drastic choice primarily to avoid the terrifying frost from Arthas's divine artifact.
Had he not acted decisively, the chilling power would have consumed him in short order.
Why…? He possessed the golden flames of the Phoenix! How could they be so easily overcome by frost?!
What kind of divine artifact was this? How could frost possibly freeze the flames of a Phoenix?!
"Uwaaaaaaaaaah!!!" Riser roared like a beast, his fiery wings expanding even further.
"Truly terrifying… frost that can freeze the Phoenix's flames. You are truly fearsome." Riser said, each word shocking the intently watching devils in the hall, especially the Phenex family members.
Could frost truly freeze the flames of a Phoenix?
"But, I will not yield! I stake the Phenex family's honor, the Phoenix's glory!" Roaring, intense flames engulfed Riser's entire body.
A shrill cry pierced the air as Riser transformed into a colossal Phoenix composed entirely of flames.
Staking his body, soul, and will, Riser unleashed the Phenex family's strongest attack. He'd given everything to defend the Phenex family's, the Phoenix's, supreme glory!
Facing an attack that would terrify any high-class devil, Arthas remained impassive. Frostmourne, which had flown away, was somehow back in his hand.
He began to chant slowly—the forgotten song of the forsaken, a lament for the deceased, a song of the sword of the dead. Arthas planted the blade firmly before him.
As if sensing impending doom, the soaring fire Phoenix cried out in agony, struggling, its speed gradually slowing.
The air grew thick and viscous. An ominous aura, released by Frostmourne, enveloped the entire battle zone.
The proud fire Phoenix spread its wings before Arthas, poised to take one more step, to unleash its flames and destroy its enemy. But that step would never be taken.
The Phoenix's flames… extinguished, or rather, frozen solid.
"The Phenex flames… frozen by frost."
Riser, appearing momentarily in mid-air, uttered these words with utter despair before plummeting to the earth.
