### **Chapter 1: The Transfer Student**

The gates of Nocturna Heights Academy loomed before Elena Carter like the jaws of a beast.

Rain slicked the iron bars, turning them black as old blood. The school—a gothic monstrosity of spires and stained glass—perched on the cliffside, watching her. It was the kind of place that didn't welcome outsiders.

*"You're lucky to be here,"* her scholarship letter had said.

*Lucky.*

Elena tightened her grip on her suitcase. The bus had already rumbled away, leaving her alone in the downpour.

A shadow moved beyond the gates.

A boy stood there, drenched but untouched by the rain's misery. His hair was ink-black, his skin pale as moonlight. His eyes—*gold*. Not hazel, not brown. *Gold.*

"You're late," he said.

Elena blinked. "The bus—"

"Doesn't matter." He turned, gesturing for her to follow. "They're waiting."

"What's your name?" she asked.

He didn't look back. "Kieran."

"Elena."

"I know."

A shiver crawled up her spine.

The grand doors creaked open, revealing a cavernous hall lit by flickering chandeliers. Dozens of faces turned toward her—some curious, some hostile. A girl with silver hair smirked. A broad-shouldered boy with scars on his knuckles growled low in his throat.

At the far end of the room stood a man in a tailored black suit—*Headmaster Vaelith*. His smile didn't reach his hollow eyes.

"Ah, Miss Carter," he said. "We've been expecting you."

Kieran melted into the crowd, leaving Elena exposed.

The headmaster's voice dropped to a whisper only she could hear.

"Welcome to Nocturna Heights. *Try not to die
