Episode 6: Digital Nukes & Burning Loyalties
---
Smoke thickened in the narrow tunnels beneath the city as the rumble of helicopters intensified overhead. The walls trembled slightly, a subtle reminder that time was running out. Julian's eyes scanned the darkness ahead, his voice low but sharp.
"Positions. They'll breach the upper level any second now."
Max, crouched over a portable thermal scanner, glanced up. "Three units incoming. Ghost Net operatives. Fully armed."
Reese cocked his weapon with a casual smirk. "Perfect. I've been needing to stretch my trigger finger."
Julian unfolded the schematic map of the city's abandoned rail systems. "We split. Max and Eve hit the tower. Extract the data and wipe all traces. Carter, Reese—you're with me. We draw fire and buy time."
Eve raised an eyebrow. "We're outnumbered. Splitting makes us vulnerable."
Julian met her gaze. "And staying together makes us a target. Move."
No more words were needed. D7 scattered into the darkness like shadows fleeing the light.
---
Above ground, chaos erupted. Ghost Net soldiers—silent, faceless, and swift—descended from choppers, their boots smashing onto rooftops and pavement. Civilians screamed. Sirens blared. Fires raged in the distance.
Lucian watched from a high-tech command van several blocks away, sipping black coffee as satellite feeds displayed D7's every move.
"Corner them," he said coldly. "No survivors."
---
Meanwhile, Max and Eve reached the base of the telecom relay station. A steel door blocked their path.
"I've got this," Max muttered. His fingers danced across the keypad, inserting a bypass chip. The lock clicked open.
Inside, the servers buzzed and flickered. Max hooked in the decryptor while Eve secured the perimeter.
"Three minutes," Max said, sweat dripping down his brow.
Lines of encrypted data flashed across the screen. Then—Access Granted.
Eve leaned over his shoulder. "What the hell is that?"
Max's eyes widened. "It's not just financial records… it's a global control system. A blueprint for crashing stock markets, redirecting satellites, shutting down nations."
Her voice tightened. "You're saying Nexus is a weapon."
"A digital nuke."
Then—the wall exploded behind them.
Ghost Net troops stormed in. Eve tackled Max, both rolling behind a console as bullets ripped through metal.
Max pulled a glowing chip from the console. "Take this. Run. Get it to Julian."
"I'm not leaving you—"
"You have to," he interrupted. "Go!"
Reluctantly, Eve bolted through the back entrance, bullets chasing her shadow.
Max turned to face the attackers, raising a small device.
Lucian's voice echoed through a drone speaker. "Hello, Max. Goodbye."
Max smiled faintly. "Boom."
He pressed the trigger.
The building erupted into flame.
---
Julian staggered as the blast wave shook the ground. "That was Max's location..."
Reese grabbed his shoulder. "We have to go. Now."
Before they could move, Eve stumbled into view, bruised, breathing hard, holding up the scorched data core.
"He didn't make it," she said, voice cracking. "But he finished the upload."
Julian took the core, his eyes burning. "Then we finish what he started."
He looked toward the distant skyline, where military choppers still circled.
"No more running. We hit back. Hard."
