The sky was bright, a testament to the drain caused by time.
On a mountain peak, where the sun shone the brightest, stood two figures. And behind them, not far from where they met, were groups of supernaturals.
One sat in a wheelchair, and the other, his skin shining brightly as if resembling the texture of crystal.
"You know the old," the man seated in the wheelchair spoke. "Seventy-one years," he continued, his eyes interlocked with the monster that stood before him. "Seventy-one long years of treaty. It is only natural that we trust each other," he paused in hesitation, "yet, you make it difficult."
The middle-aged man, a monster that seemed too good-looking for his age, walked closer, close enough for his shining skin to sparkle from the light of the sun.
"There is no need for anything to be difficult," the man finally said. "He is one of us now. He mated with our own," he continued. "He would be here if everything did not seem so… unpredictable."
And Billie, the man in the wheelchair, shook his head.
"You say that, yet you refuse to let us see his face. You confuse me when you speak about the unpredictable," Billie's voice said in a firm tone. "How are we supposed to trust this… bloodsucker if we don't even know his face?" Billie pointed his finger at his own skull as he said the sentence. "Think, Carlisle. Think."
Carlisle sighed after he spoke.
"I'm not saying you won't see him," he tried to defend. "All I'm saying is that this isn't the proper time for us to."
"He attacked us!" Sam, a shirtless man who was standing behind Billie with his pack, shouted loudly. But Billie raised his arm, preventing his outrage.
"We predict," Billie corrected. A side of his face turned behind him, as if to warn Sam that he had misspoken. He turned his head back to Carlisle. "We predict that he had something to do with what happened to Sam's pack." He observed Carlisle's unchanging expression, it seemed too calm. "Did your boy tell you about it, the big one?"
"Yes, I heard," Carlisle softly answered, "but he also said you accused him as well." And Billie sighed again, clearly unaware of the information Carlisle had spoken. "Do you see what I mean when I say unpredictable?" he continued, expecting some type of answer. But Billie only nodded.
"They don't remember anything," Billie said. "Nothing. All of them. It doesn't make any sense, it can't be a coincidence." He looked straight into Carlisle's eyes, his gaze unshaking, no fear, no reaction, just observing. "Now tell me if that's normal to you." And for the first time since forever, Carlisle felt a chill. "Because the last time I remember, only magic from your kind can cause such a phenomenon." He lowered his voice, knowing that everyone gathered there could hear him. "Such coincidences break treaties."
Silence followed after he spoke. Carlisle only looked behind him, where Edward stood, his head slightly lowered.
"No harm happened to them," Carlisle said. "They didn't get hurt." He turned his head to the four shirtless boys and men, who had expressions that reeked of bloodlust. "They look fine to me."
"That's not the point, Cullen!" Sam, who had been silent the whole time, shouted in anger. "He attacked me!" He began to walk forward.
Edward, who had been staring at the ground the whole time, shot his eyes at him in an instant after hearing the sound of his footsteps.
"Can you prove it?" Carlisle tried to ask.
"Who else could it be!" Sam didn't stop. His body visibly heated up, an indication of his near-transforming state. "The treaty is broken."
"It isn't," Edward spoke up. "Vlad wasn't part of our coven the night that happened." Sam stopped his feet. "If anything is getting broken, you will be the cause."
"Silence, Cullen!" His body was growing, it was reacting to what he felt.
"Sam!" But Billie disturbed his voice. And for the first time throughout the conversation, Billie's voice hinted at emotion.
Sam's eyes locked with Billie's, as if noticing something ascent. He backed away, turned his body, and sprinted. Soon after, his pack followed.
Leah was the only person who remained, leaning against a tree, watching them.
Billie turned his head back to Carlisle, looked into his eyes for a while, then nodded.
Leah fixed her body and walked to his seated figure. Holding his chair, she pushed it, and they left.
Carlisle looked back at Edward, then in swiftness, he disappeared, gone in an instant.
And soon, Edward prepared to follow. But right before he could take his sprint, right before he could vanish.
He smelled a faint yet distinct scent in the air.
It was the smell of a dog, but it proved different. Feminine.
It was too faint, so he ignored it.
Just like Carlisle, he was gone.
Leaving with his stoned, shining skin.
Skin that spoke of his difference. That spoke a warning.
He was not a human—he was a monster.
________
The trees stood witness as soulless beings moved past them with unhuman speed. The wind their sprinting produced caused them to shiver.
In seconds, they arrived.
And standing by the door, her face showing worry and her body visibly shaken—
Was Esme, doing nothing but waiting.
Carlisle moved to her side and kissed her on the cheek. She hugged him by his neck and noticed Edward.
"How did it go?" she asked, still hanging her arm around Carlisle's figure.
"It's pointless," Edward answered.
"They still want to see him," Carlisle shot in. "What did Roselle say? Did she talk to him?"
"Haven't asked," she answered. "We will ask her when she returns from school."
Carlisle nodded at her words.
And before Edward could walk in, Carlisle tapped his shoulder. Edward turned back.
"Thank you," Carlisle said. "You didn't have to go with me, but you did."
Edward smiled faintly.
"And…" Esme walked between them. "How did it go?" she asked him. "Will you be going back to school?"
