"Yūichirō Hyakuya"
"I can't believe it! I defeated a monster, and my punishment is confinement? What kind of joke is this?"
In a high school classroom, a boy in a uniform, black hair, and green eyes sat by the window, utterly dejected.
His name was Yūichirō Hyakuya. Four years ago, his family was slaughtered by vampires, another species inhabiting this world. Since then, he'd been on a relentless path of revenge.
Over four years, he'd experienced much, rising to the rank of Second Lieutenant. He possessed the strength to kill a Horseman of the Apocalypse, yet for some reason, he was consistently denied missions to kill vampires.
Recently, he'd killed a Horseman, but was punished with confinement for disobeying orders. A soldier, he was now attending this high school—a school full of ordinary humans—a situation he found utterly infuriating.
"A soldier in a high school full of civilians? What's the point of this?"
The teacher lecturing at the front noticed Yūichirō Hyakuya. Turning, he said, "Hey, Yūichirō Hyakuya, what are you muttering about? This is class."
Yūichirō Hyakuya merely glared at him, then scoffed and turned away.
The teacher's irritation flared. "What kind of attitude is that? If you mock me, I'll suspend you!"
To the teacher's surprise, Yūichirō Hyakuya excitedly stood, slamming his fist on the desk. "What? Suspension? Really? Please do!"
He bowed deeply, leaving the teacher speechless.
"Are you kidding me?! You're treating me like a fool!"
A finger tapped Yūichirō Hyakuya's shoulder. He turned to see a petite girl with purple curly hair, sharp, knowing eyes, flawless pale skin, sitting behind him, watching him impassively.
"Who are you?" Yūichirō Hyakuya asked, completely bewildered. He didn't recognize her.
Instead of answering, the girl held up a notebook with two lines written on it:
"My name is Shinoa Hīragi. I'm a military observer."
"Huh?" Yūichirō Hyakuya looked at the notebook, utterly confused.
Shinoa Hīragi wrote more: "If you take uncoordinated actions, I will report it to the military, extending your confinement."
Yūichirō Hyakuya's frustration boiled over. "What?! What does that mean?!"
The teacher, who had just turned back to the blackboard, heard Yūichirō Hyakuya's outburst and spun around, annoyed. "Yūichirō Hyakuya! If you continue disrupting class…"
Yūichirō Hyakuya: "Damn it!"
Teacher: "Damn it!"
Shinoa Hīragi spoke, pointing to her notebook: "Coordination."
Yūichirō Hyakuya, though furious, knew that continuing this would only result in a longer confinement.
Grumbling, he reluctantly sat down.
Shinoa Hīragi added, "By the way, your confinement ends only after you make a friend. So, try making friends."
Hours later, class ended, and students filed out. Yūichirō Hyakuya remained, brooding.
Four years ago, his family was murdered by vampires, and he was the sole survivor. He met the person who changed his life—Guren Ichinose.
Guren Ichinose, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Japanese Imperial Demon Army, was instrumental in Yūichirō Hyakuya's rise.
However, whenever Yūichirō Hyakuya requested vampire extermination missions, Guren Ichinose refused, using various excuses. Now, he'd sent Shinoa Hīragi to monitor him, stating that his confinement wouldn't end until he made friends.
"Wait, I also love ice cream. How about I try talking to people that way?" Shinoa Hīragi approached him, referencing a departing student's comment about getting ice cream.
"What are you doing? You're way too familiar," Yūichirō Hyakuya said, slumping onto the desk.
"Lieutenant Colonel Guren told me that witnessing your family's murder as a child made it hard for you to connect with others.
The fear of losing those you get close to keeps you from making friends, leaving you without classmates, friends, or a lover," Shinoa Hīragi said, her words striking a nerve.
Yūichirō Hyakuya stood, grabbing Shinoa Hīragi's shoulders, his frustration evident. "Don't just blabber about my life! Tell that idiot Guren to let me join the vampire extermination unit. I only have the strength to kill them left. Let me kill vampires!"
"I figured you'd say that. The Lieutenant Colonel asked me to give you this." Shinoa Hīragi produced a folded note and gave it to Yūichirō Hyakuya.
Yūichirō Hyakuya took the note with a smirk.
"That guy Guren… he's not so bad after all."
He opened the note and read:
"The army doesn't need a friendless, loveless virgin. If you're unhappy, make a friend and introduce them to me. Though that's completely impossible for you, right, Yū-chan?"
Yūichirō Hyakuya exploded, crumpling the note and throwing it on the floor. "Damn it!"
He grabbed his bag, muttering, "Those damn fools are all messing with me."
He slammed the classroom door shut, the sound echoing in the hallway.
Only Shinoa Hīragi remained—or rather, almost only she.
After Yūichirō Hyakuya left, Shinoa Hīragi watched the door. Another student packed their bag and brushed past her.
Shinoa Hīragi turned to look.
Noticing her gaze, the student opened the door Yūichirō Hyakuya had slammed shut and turned to look at Shinoa Hīragi.
For a split second, his normally apathetic eyes seemed to transform into blood-red eyes with three black tomoe.
