"The Strange Aoki"
"Cursed Gear… Vampire Extermination Unit?"
The three vampires recognized the weapons—Cursed Gear, unique to the Vampire Extermination Unit and specifically designed to kill vampires.
"Requesting backup. We'll capture them alive."
Suddenly, Yūichirō Hyakuya charged forward. "Try it if you dare!"
He swung his sword, unleashing a wave of black energy like a tidal wave, creating a massive crack in the ground.
Despite the ferocious attack, the three vampires evaded it.
"Enough, Yūichirō. We retreat," Mitsuba Sangū called out, as Yūichirō Hyakuya prepared to press his advantage.
Simultaneously, one of the vampires ordered a retreat.
Yūichirō Hyakuya wanted to pursue, but Shinoa Hīragi warned, "Yūichirō, this is enemy territory. We need to withdraw before they call for reinforcements."
"I know." Though reluctant, Yūichirō Hyakuya followed Shinoa Hīragi's advice.
At that moment, Aoki, who had been observing from a distance, approached.
"What's going on? You're just letting them go?" Aoki said, casually picking at his ear.
"Didn't Shinoa just say this is enemy territory? Reinforcements would be a problem," Mitsuba Sangū said, clearly exasperated with Aoki's nonchalance.
Aoki ignored Mitsuba Sangū. "What? Other vampires? Easy. Let them lead us to their base, then we wipe them all out. Perfect, right?"
Aoki unexpectedly charged at one of the vampires, instantly drawing Yoriichi Type Zero and slashing forward.
The vampire quickly raised its weapon to defend.
"Go!" The vampire leader repeated the retreat order.
After deflecting Aoki's attack, the three vampires retreated.
Aoki immediately followed. "Hey! Don't run! You can't escape me!"
Seeing Aoki's reckless pursuit, Mitsuba Sangū exploded. "What the hell is wrong with this guy?! So reckless! He has no brains! Why did Lieutenant Colonel Guren recommend this idiot as captain and let him join the Vampire Extermination Unit?! Is he insane?!"
Shinoa Hīragi and the others were equally speechless. They'd never seen Aoki behave like this before. He was always so calm and composed. Why the sudden change?
Could it be an overzealous desire for merit? That seemed the only plausible explanation.
"Hey, what are you all standing around for?! Chase after him!" Yūichirō Hyakuya shouted, watching Aoki disappear. "His actions are reckless, but are we just going to let him die? He's our comrade!"
Except for Yūichirō Hyakuya, no one moved. They knew that if they didn't rescue Aoki, he would die, but a rescue attempt could lead to the entire squad's annihilation.
"…Chase." After a long silence, Mitsuba Sangū finally spoke, making a surprising decision. From the beginning, she had prioritized strategy and would never normally make a choice that could jeopardize the team.
Only Shinoa Hīragi likely understood Mitsuba Sangū's seemingly contradictory decision, knowing about her past—how her impulsive actions had once cost her comrades.
This wasn't the time for such thoughts. Following Mitsuba Sangū's order, they pursued without hesitation.
The three vampires, seeing Aoki in pursuit, sneered. "How foolish. He dares to chase us. Once he's in our base, he's as good as dead."
They didn't notice the subtle, sinister smile that touched Aoki's lips after they spoke.
Following the vampires, Aoki reached an abandoned underground station. The vampires disappeared upon entering.
The sight before him was a stark change of scenery.
The abandoned station was filled with humans in white clothing sitting along the walls. They were expressionless, pale, and emaciated, clearly starved for a long time.
Aoki walked slowly through the crowd. Many looked up, but none spoke or reacted.
He reached the second floor, where ten figures immediately surrounded him—ten vampires!
"Tsk tsk tsk, how foolish to come here alone. You're truly asking for death!"
"No, no. Let's not kill him so easily. We'll keep him and drain his blood slowly."
"Yes, yes! His blood already smells delicious! I'm so thirsty!"
"Be careful. He has Cursed Gear—weapons designed to kill us."
The vampires continued their discussion, but Aoki remained silent, his head bowed.
"Alright, enough talk. Let's take care of him before his comrades arrive."
As the ten vampires prepared to attack, Aoki finally spoke.
"Hmm, ten vampires. If my calculations are correct, that should increase my combat power by over a hundred points. Not much, but it's something. What a bunch of weaklings. I haven't even encountered a single Twelve Kizuki-level vampire yet. I wonder how they managed to drive all the humans into the walls?"
He slowly raised his head, his eyes now three-tomoe Sharingan.
"Whatever. I'll deal with these trash first. Mitsuba will probably nag me later."
