Chapter 236 - Chapter 236: Close Encounter of the Third Kind

Although it was determined that the Avengers could, probably, maybe solve the problem, Star-Lord and the others still held a small meeting to discuss whether or not to tell Spider-Man about the situation. Star-Lord was the first to speak: "I don't think we can trust that kid. Look at him, dressed like that, he's a complete tight-suit pervert, clearly not a good person."

"Don't judge a book by its cover, Quill."

Adam Warlock offered a definitive dissenting opinion: "I can see that young man possesses an incredibly pure and noble soul, perhaps even more so than any of us. He is trustworthy."

"Woah, so now we're dealing with a big good guy. Do you think we can get some nice stuff? Like that gun in the little lady's hand or something."

Rocket didn't really care. Strictly speaking, he didn't even agree to continue investigating Michael Korvac. That monster was too dangerous. They had personally witnessed the monster blow up a Kree planet. Not even the Nova Corps could defeat something like that, let alone them.

"This planet is under threat. At least we should tell them that they are under threat."

Drax said something nonsensical. Gamora looked at him: "And then?"

"We can't defeat that monster, so we should leave."

While the Guardians of the Galaxy were having their little meeting, Peter was also discussing things. He had called the Avengers for backup and was chatting with Carol and the on-site personnel about extraterrestrials.

"I'm not entirely clear on the standard diplomatic protocol, but since this is an alien spaceship that landed on American territory, and you are government managers, perhaps you should be in charge of diplomatic affairs?" Peter asked Professor Michael and Carol.

The current Carol Danvers was still an ordinary person, which meant the plot of the Captain Marvel series of movies hadn't happened in this universe. In other words, the Skrulls probably hadn't arrived on Earth, and they might not even be alien refugees. But that wasn't the point. He was more curious about the true identity of Professor Michael Rossi, who was in charge of Project Pegasus, especially since his Spider-Sense tingled slightly when he got close to the man.

This person might be the Kree Empire's scientist, Mar-Vell's disguise on Earth. As for whether he was, and if so, what his purpose was for coming to Earth, Peter had no idea. In the comics, he came to stop Earth's aerospace program. Could he be here to stop America's Project Pegasus?

However, on the other side, Carol and Michael exchanged glances after hearing Peter's question, then looked at him with an extremely troubled expression. Carol was the first to explain the situation: "Well... we don't know the proper procedure for receiving aliens. We've never encountered aliens before. In fact, we weren't sure aliens even existed until this year."

"Really? The alien biological invasion in New York earlier this month originated from an extraterrestrial creature the US military captured in the Arizona desert."

Peter's words surprised Carol. Did that mean the US military really captured extraterrestrial creatures, and these creatures even invaded New York? She hadn't been entirely immune to similar conspiracy theories, but for Spider-Man to state it as a fact was a bit...

Michael, on the other hand, wasn't surprised at all. He even glanced at Carol, as if to say, Did you think the US military was some kind of just and benevolent force?

While they were still chatting, the Guardians of the Galaxy finally reached a conclusion. Adam Warlock and Star-Lord, the two most reliable speakers among them, came over to explain the situation. However, when the two approached, Peter froze for a moment, then pointed at Adam's forehead with uncertainty.

"Wait, is that... an Infinity Stone?"

"Oh, yeah, you know about it, too." Star-Lord chuckled foolishly before realizing the problem: "Wait, you know about it too?"

"It really is? Which one? The Soul Stone?"

Peter realized the problem was even more serious. With the Time Stone not in Strange's possession, it was highly likely that the other Stones were also having issues. In the comics, the Soul Stone was embedded in Adam's forehead, but given the special setting of the Soul Stone in the movie universe, he had to ask if it was indeed the Soul Stone.

This surprised Star-Lord and Adam even more.

"You know about the Infinity Stones, but... why?"

"There are Infinity Stones on Earth. During World War II, the Red Skull found the Tesseract, which contained the Space Stone. Earlier this year, an Asgardian, along with an army of alien Chitauri and a scepter containing the Mind Stone, invaded Earth. We drove them away. Asgard retrieved the Tesseract, but the Mind Stone and the scepter are still on Earth."

Listening to Spider-Man explain the history of the Infinity Stones on Earth in just a few sentences, both of them were quite surprised. But on the flip side, they wouldn't need to explain much about what was to happen next. Adam nodded, and the gem on his forehead began to glow brightly.

"Please don't worry, Spider-Man. I'm just showing you exactly what happened—"

The others present appeared in a fantastical space, as if they were standing inside an aquarium, with a protective glass on the other side, displaying the past experiences of the Guardians of the Galaxy: Star-Lord, who was raised by the Ravagers, received a commission to steal an Infinity Stone and deliver it to the Sovereign. That Infinity Stone was the Soul Stone. Subsequently, the Sovereign used the Soul Stone to create Adam Warlock, but because Adam Warlock could use the Soul Stone to see the essence of people's souls, a hilarious escape began.

This was an alternative Guardians of the Galaxy origin story. Aside from replacing the villain with the Sovereign, revealing Star-Lord's identity as the illegitimate son of the Emperor of the Spartax Empire, and adding Mantis and Adam, it wasn't much different from the movie. In short, this group of unreliable people eventually formed the Guardians of the Galaxy, saved the galaxy once, and started working as mercenary-style superheroes.

Next, they received a commission from the Kree Empire to investigate some unknown destructive activities. The Kree Empire's Supreme Accuser, Ronan, handed this "small matter" to the Guardians of the Galaxy to handle because the Kree Empire was engaged in a protracted war with the Skrull Empire.

Peter glanced at Michael, confirming that his expression shifted for a moment when he heard "Kree Empire."

"There, we found the entity causing the destruction. Unexpectedly, it was a person, who appeared to be an Earthling."

In the illusion, Adam showed Peter and the others the image of a man who looked extremely gaunt and haggard.
