Chapter 284 - Chapter 284: Fast as Lightning!

"They're still just children, Magneto, and this fight is clearly not suitable for them."

"Both Scott Summers and you have challenged many enemies unsuited to your abilities, even those who counter your powers. You don't need to make excuses for the children's lack of maturity." Magneto didn't seem displeased. He simply snapped his fingers, forcibly supplying power to the entire island of Genosha with his abilities, while also anticipating that Electro would be drawn back by the electricity here.

Logan just stared at Magneto, not saying a word.

"Apologies, but the most important thing now is that Max Dillon escaped." Peter walked over, unceremoniously interrupting the tension between the two. "He looks very weak, so he must be looking for electricity. The best place is the Avengers Tower in Manhattan. Max completely drained the power in my suit, so I can't contact the Avengers right now."

"I appreciate your help, Spider-Man, but Genosha is tied up at the moment," Magneto said. He raised his hand, doing something unknown, and looked at Peter with slight apology. "But I will have my son, Pietro, take you to Manhattan. His ability is super-speed; he can get you back to Manhattan the quickest."

"I'll have the kids use Genosha's restored communications to contact the Avengers. You head back first," Logan added, then continued to look at Magneto. "I'm quite sure I still have a lot to discuss with him."

"Hey, I'm here!" A silver flash of lightning arrived on the scene. Pietro was rambling about his "great achievements": "I rescued over three hundred people, twenty-three dogs, and two cats, oh, and also..."

"Pietro," the old man interrupted his son's chatter. "I need you to take Spider-Man to Manhattan immediately and help the Avengers catch the mutant who crippled Genosha's power."

"Sure, Dad, easy peasy." Pietro put on his windproof goggles, then looked at Peter: "Sorry, for my running posture, you'll have to choose between me carrying you or me giving you a piggyback, mate."

"No problem, I just need one hand on your back. I can stick to you."

Pietro smiled. That works, too. He turned his back to Peter, shrugged, and as soon as Peter's hand was on his back, he immediately took off at full speed. An audible boom instantly marked his start.

Speeding along with Quicksilver was a very peculiar experience. Peter felt the sonic boom and marvelled at the speed with which he could sprint across the water while carrying a person. This was much faster than when he delivered steaks to himself and Wanda a few nights ago. Even more astonishingly, Pietro's running seemed to create some kind of air barrier; Peter didn't feel the G-forces associated with high velocity at all.

"How fast can you run?!"

"Normally around Mach five. This is an emergency, so I have to push my sprinting limit."

"So...?"

"My fastest time was running around the Earth's equator in about three minutes, but you know, just like a regular person running a kilometer, that requires technique and is much slower." As Quicksilver stopped, Peter looked at the familiar furnishings of the Avengers Tower penthouse. Quicksilver removed his goggles and slicked back his silver hair.

"Also, no need to shout so loud. When I run, I can keep the air around us relatively still, and you're kind of noisy in my ears. Wow, this is Avengers Tower. You guys decorated it really nicely. Much better than my old man's outdated, European-aristocracy-mimicking design. Why are the lights off?"

Janet van Dyne was on duty at Avengers Tower tonight. She was watching a horror movie to pass the time when a silver blur suddenly darted out of the elevator, startling her into a scream that echoed through the tower. The snack platter she was holding scattered everywhere. Out of reflex, she instantly shrank and looked at the people rushing in, only then seeing Peter and the stranger curiously looking around.

J.A.R.V.I.S. conveniently turned the lights on.

"Jan? What happened!"

Hank Pym, who had stumbled out of the laboratory door, saw Peter, Janet, and the unfamiliar young man, and his first thought was: "Was Spider-Man playing a prank?"

"Uh, no, something's happened. We rushed back and didn't realize she was watching a horror movie," Peter explained briefly, introducing Pietro: "This is Pietro Maximoff. His superpower is super-speed, reaching about 223 kilometers per second at his fastest. Pietro, this is Miss Janet, the Wasp, and this is Dr. Hank Pym, Ant-Man."

"Uh, hello. I'm Quicksilver, the codename I gave myself," Pietro said with a smile. Hank looked at Peter: "What's going on?"

"Long story short: Max completed his transformation. When we tried to stop him, he self-destructed. Now he's turned into a mass of living lightning and is starving, heading for the Arc Reactor beneath Avengers Tower."

The Wasp, having recovered from the fright, returned to normal size and was still processing Peter's words when Hank reacted immediately: "What is Max's current energy storage capacity?"

"I don't know, but the electrical energy he released was incredibly exaggerated, nearly equal to a small thunderstorm. He absorbed all of Genosha's electricity in one go and still hadn't reached his limit."

Hank frowned.

Max Dillon was heading toward Manhattan. Because he hadn't eaten enough, his flight speed was very sluggish, barely exceeding Mach seven.

Shortly after he left, he felt Genosha's power restored. He had initially planned to go back for a feast, but at the critical moment, Mister Sinister's voice reappeared in his mind.

"Don't think about going back. That power is being maintained by Magneto. You are no match for Magneto. If you don't want to seek your own demise, do not think about confronting Magneto head-on."

Electro was obedient. The memory of almost being solo-killed by Spider-Man was still vivid. He didn't want to be caught and sent to the Raft prison, or worse, be killed by Magneto.

He wanted to properly enjoy himself and absorb enough electrical energy.

So his target was clear: the large Arc Reactor beneath Avengers Tower. It was rumored to be able to supply power to the entire Avengers Tower for three continuous years. It would certainly make a decent meal, along with the entire Manhattan power grid.

He was going to feast!
