Spider-Gwen was placed on involuntary leave from her unit—the world's most powerful armed security organization, S.H.I.E.L.D. She was brought aboard the airborne Helicarrier and was completely overwhelmed.
"We've had a powerful flying aircraft carrier over our heads all this time? How did I never know New York had a floating aircraft carrier?"
"Because we can't let our enemies know that we are always here, so we need to maintain a low profile, Miss Stacy." An older woman with an eye-patch interrupted Gwen's reverie and provided an explanation. Gwen paused, then extended her hand: "Oh, um, hello, I'm Spider-Woman. I'm thinking of a better codename, but that's what everyone calls me right now."
"I know. I'm S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Peggy Carter. Welcome to S.H.I.E.L.D., Miss."
On the way, Gwen had already explained everything about the Peter Parker of Earth-65 to Harry. As mentioned before, compared to Earth-616, the people of Earth-65 generally had lower psychological tolerance. For instance, this world's Peter Parker, unable to handle bullying, used Curt Connors' formula to develop the Lizard Serum, thus turning himself into the Lizard. Similarly, after Harry heard that Spider-Woman had killed Peter, he didn't investigate the truth but immediately joined S.H.I.E.L.D. and participated in the Super-Soldier program.
His sole purpose was to defeat Spider-Woman to avenge Peter.
One could only say this universe was truly crazy.
Harry basically listened to Spider-Gwen's explanation—or rather, her narration—with a dark expression. From Gwen's own perspective, she had undoubtedly killed Peter. But after hearing everything, Harry simply closed his eyes and let out a long breath.
"This matter might be more complicated than you think, so let's discuss it in detail at S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters."
And so, Gwen was now here.
"Alright, ladies and gentlemen, now I will explain the situation."
Director Carter glanced around, then brought up the information: "Thanks to the help of Mr. Peter Parker from another world—who is the Spider-Man of their universe—we finally know the true leader of the technological terrorist organization, S.I.L.K.: it is Dr. Cindy Moon, a genius in genetic bio-engineering. And she is also the mastermind behind the Lizard Serum series of incidents."
Spider-Gwen looked at Carter in shock. Last night, Peter said a lot about Cindy, but this point was not explicitly confirmed. He only stated that this woman was the head of S.I.L.K. and that she created the radioactive spider, nothing more.
"Many years ago, Osborn Industries discovered a substance in outer space. It was by studying this substance that they created the first genetically modified radioactive spider. However, this spider was killed before it could bite anyone. The person who was nearly bitten was Cindy Moon. For all these years, she has been trying to replicate that spider. And yes, she succeeded."
This much Spider-Gwen already knew. She was now eager to learn things she didn't know.
"It's not just the modified spider. The Lizard Serum developed by Curt Connors was also based on the blood of that alien parasitic spider. That bastard liked to abuse students. Peter was one of those he abused. Sorry, our Peter and Connors."
Harry angrily revealed a small part of the past, which Spider-Gwen was also aware of. Hearing Harry's words, she immediately made a connection: "Wait, you mean Peter's Lizard Serum was..."
"Although the formula was stolen from Connors, the raw material was very likely sold to him by Cindy Moon for the purpose of testing the Lizard Serum's effects." This was precisely the preparation S.H.I.E.L.D. was making for recruiting Spider-Woman. Carter looked at Spider-Gwen: "Dr. Cindy Moon created dozens of Lizards across New York with the goal of testing the effects of this serum. But unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, we were one step ahead. Mr. Harry Osborn developed a more complete Lizard Serum that circumvented their flaws, retaining only the advantages."
"My skin still turns green," Harry disagreed with Carter's conclusion. "And if I sustain serious injury, I still transform into the Lizard. That's not a very good improvement."
"Wait, Harry?" Spider-Gwen understood Harry's intention: "Are you saying you're going to take down S.I.L.K.?"
"I have to pass judgment, or at least capture Cindy Moon. This is for Peter. I must get justice for him." Harry looked at Spider-Gwen: "This might be the only thing I can do."
After all, he couldn't very well avenge Peter's direct killer right now.
Spider-Gwen opened her mouth, then finally nodded. She, too, had nothing else to mourn Peter or do for him.
As for the rest, well, leave it to 616 Peter and Gwen.
Gwen simply decided to watch the drama unfold. She wasn't a combatant herself; she had just tagged along. But seriously, if Osborn was the root of all evil on Earth-616, then Cindy Moon was the root of all evil on Earth-65. Who would have thought that Cindy, who was gentle as a puppy on Earth-616, would be a supervillain here?
Hmm, I wonder if there's a universe where Gwen is a supervillain...
"We will participate in the fight. Mainly because we have things we need to figure out. So, the question now is how many combat personnel S.I.L.K. has, and who we'll be fighting."
Peter looked at Peggy Carter, who displayed three photos: "To our knowledge, Dr. Cindy herself has no combat ability. However, she has three super-powered individuals under her command: one is Agent 77, who possesses superhuman speed and strength, as well as excellent jumping ability; one is an engineer named Herman Schultz, who can emit extremely powerful shockwaves; and the other is very likely the person you are looking for, Curt Connors, the Lizard."
Three superheroes against three supervillains. It sounded like a very reasonable match-up.
"This is Cindy Moon's address. Now, you have only one task: capture them. Of course, Miss Stacy, you are not required to participate in this battle."
Director Carter emphasized this point even at the end, adding with a smile: "Even if you do not participate in this battle, there will be no issue. But if you are willing to join, S.H.I.E.L.D. is willing to drop the libelous charges against you by the Daily Bugle."
