Chapter 12 - Ep. 4 — Apocalyptic World, I

If I was a test subject… then I might possibly know who killed me, as they wouldn't have wanted a test subject getting away… right?

"Hey! How did you-" before I could finish my sentence he cut me off.

"Oh no, you need to hurry…" He pulled his headphones on and handed me an ear piece.

"Wait why?"

"I'm not sure but I think I heard someone say your name…" He started typing, I had no clue what he was looking at though… was that code or a command? It looks nothing like the code I know in my world.

"Why would that be bad… and where?" I went ahead and put the ear piece in.

"At the laboratory, and… I'm not sure, but it didn't sound good… what did you do?" He slowly looked at me.

"What? I didn't do anything?" Well… I didn't do anything. I have no clew what Lydia did.

"Whatever, just get going or you'll be late…"

"Umm… okay, how do I get out?" I started twirling my fingers as I was getting worried.

"Far door at the end of the hall, also, make sure you don't transform there." He gave me a stern look.

"Okay I'll hurry then…" I probably shouldn't tell him that I don't even have my Xeno with me.

As he said, the exit was at the end of the hallway. I opened the door and exited. Wherever he lived, looked quite apocalyptic. There were trees and patches of grass completely burned, random meteorites halfway in the ground, and everywhere I looked was just dull… like the life had been completely sucked out.

As I walked, I saw houses completely destroyed, meteorites halfway in the buildings and burned to the ground. What happened here? I stopped and remembered something.

"I have no clew where I am…" As I said this I could hear something breathing behind me and my heart froze as I slowly turned around.

Right behind me was some creature, somewhat humanoid but didn't look like a human. It looked out of place, as it was a dark foliage green colour, but everything around it was completely dull… but what made it look even weirder was the way it stood. It was standing on all fours, but as it was humanoid, it's back legs lifted it's hind higher in the air with it's head being lower.

With it being on all fours, I'd think it would be shorter than me, but it's face was just below my head. It also had it's teeth showing, and tongue sticking out of it's mouth. It's nose was completely flat, almost like the cartilage was gone and just at the skulls base… speaking of cartilage, I don't even think it has ears.

The creature tilted it's head as I stepped back. It's eyes where huge, but they didn't follow how eyes normally looked like. It was as if the creature had no eye sockets… could it even see with it's flat eyes?

I quickly turned around and ran screaming for help. The wind whipped right past me as I could hear the stomping from the creature behind me… it was chasing me. I didn't know where to go, there wasn't much around…

I noticed in the distance a red barn, it was completely destroyed but if I could make it I could possibly hide in there.

I turned my head and could see the monster was falling behind… but what was really weird was that it didn't seem like it understood it's own body. It's arms flailing around as it's head constantly hit the ground and bounced right back up. It also kept almost tripping on itself… though this didn't last for long.

As I continued running, I foolishly started slowing down, thinking it couldn't keep up… but after a bit the sound that had slowly gotten farther had started catching up again… I looked behind me once again and saw that the creature was adapting fast… too fast.

At this rate, it was going to catch up to me. If I didn't speed up, I wouldn't make it.

I was slowly running out of breath… my throat was starting to burn as I was breathing so hard and my side started aching tremendously. Every step I took felt like I was walking on fire, my feet were starting to burn. If I wanted to survive, I'd have to persevere through the pain.

I took another look behind me, head spinning and heart pounding… it was definitely getting closer. If I were to guess, it would catch up in 30 seconds, and I'd need to run for another minute before making it to the barn.

I honestly started wanting to give up, but then I remembered that this was my second chance, and I wasn't going to ruin it because of some stupid monster. I persevered through years of education, this was nothing.

I tightly kept my eyes closed and kept running, pushing myself harder and harder… my feet started feeling weird, almost like a tingling feeling. Was it so bad that I couldn't even feel the pain anymore? Though, because of this, I had started running faster, I could feel my hair being pulled back by the wind as I soured through the field.

I quickly opened my eyes and realized I was about to run head first into the building, but I was running so fast that I couldn't even comprehend it until it was too late.

There was a loud crash noise as I crashed right through the wall… I slowly reopened my eyes as I had instinctively closed them before the impact and noticed everything was upside down. I was laying in a pile of hay, and if you had seen me, you'd think I was thrown in here… I started moving and fell backwards, or forward? and got myself up. I brushed the hay off of my clothes and after a few seconds quickly turned around. I had almost forgotten why I was running.

I slowly stepped over to the hole and peeked out. The dust slowly settled, but I couldn't see it anywhere… had it stopped chasing me?

I took a sigh of relief and wiped the sweat off of my forehead. My heart was still pounding and I was still breathing heavily. I really thought I was a goner there…

I started pulling some hay strands that had gotten into my hair out when I felt a drop of water hit my head.

"Huh?" I slowly looked up and the pounding in my chest had instantly disappeared.

I had frozen in complete fear.
