Chapter 264 - Chapter 264: Blood God Assessment

It was a piece of silver-white metal, engraved with a relief of a majestic snow-white bird. The bird looked powerful—somewhat like an eagle, but with different proportions. It was larger and more robust than any eagle.

This was a soul beast known as the Snow God Carving, said to be the guardian spirit of the snow mountains. But it was exceedingly rare.

Gu You didn't know much about the military, but his goal in coming here was simple: to integrate himself into this place and, through his own strength, gradually take control.

And the name of this army was—Blood God Legion. Yes, Blood God.

This legion didn't even fall under the Federal Army's official command. It existed entirely outside the usual military structure, a special force. And yet, they were the most powerful army, guarding a secret realm on the continent that very few knew about.

To qualify for enlistment here meant you were truly elite. Only a few organizations had the authority to recommend candidates to the Blood God Legion: Shrek Academy, Tang Sect, Battle God Hall, the Spirit Pagoda, and a few ancient soul master clans with long-standing traditions.

There were no weaklings here—because the weak simply wouldn't survive. The length of service here far exceeded that of ordinary armies. The minimum term was five years, but most people stayed for over ten.

After verifying Gu You's letter of recommendation, the soldier abruptly stood at attention and gave him a salute—but not the usual one of the Federal Army. He pounded his right fist against his chest—a strong and solid motion.

Gu You understood the importance of blending in and tried to mimic the gesture. But the soldier immediately stopped him.

"You're not qualified yet. Follow me." With that, the soldier marched ahead toward the distant camp.

The snow near the camp had clearly been cleared, revealing hard-packed ground beneath. Gu You could finally walk without trudging through deep snow.

The soldier shook the snow off his body and quickly stepped into the camp.

Inside, the feeling was different again. Everything was orderly and efficient. Aside from the snow-covered environment, it looked like a normal military base. But Gu You noticed something strange—there were very few people. Even patrolling soldiers were nowhere to be seen.

Gu You didn't ask any questions. The best way to understand a place was to observe and listen. From the soldier's previous tone, it was clear that the troops here were proud—perhaps even xenophobic. He knew that talking wouldn't earn him respect—only strength would. He needed to prove himself and earn a place here.

The soldier led Gu You to a building and pressed his palm against a hidden sensor. A beam of light scanned him, and the metal door opened.

"Follow me."

As soon as Gu You stepped inside, a wave of warmth enveloped him. The comforting heat flowed through his limbs, chasing away the bitter cold. Even the air felt richer in oxygen.

The soldier glanced back at him—then removed her helmet.

To Gu You's surprise, it was a woman with long chestnut hair. She looked about twenty-five or twenty-six years old, tall and wrapped in thick military garb.

Her expression was ice-cold. "Come with me. Let me warn you now—whether you get to stay or not will be decided within the next three days."

"Haha, I'm definitely staying," Gu You chuckled.

She looked him up and down, noting his thin clothing. "Arrogance is the path to death." With that, she turned and walked away.

'What the hell?' Gu You blinked. That line sounded oddly familiar.

Path to death?

'This woman must be a fan of Tang San's famous quotes,' he thought.

As they continued on, Gu You's expression shifted as he took in the rows of machines and instruments lining the halls—most of which he didn't even recognize.

They passed through a long corridor before entering a room where a second person finally appeared.

It was another female soldier, seemingly in her forties, with two stars and a stripe on her shoulder—indicating the rank of lieutenant.

"Lieutenant, this is the new arrival. Arrange his assessment." The cold-looking soldier's tone remained emotionless.

"Yes, Major." The older officer instantly stood up and gave her a chest-pounding salute.

Major?! Gu You was stunned. This woman who had brought him in wasn't just a soldier—she was a major?

Gu You had a decent understanding of military ranks. For someone so young to already be a major, while the lieutenant was clearly much older—it was shocking.

After a nod of acknowledgement to the lieutenant, the major turned and left the room.

Gu You watched her go, curiosity stirring. 'What was her name in the original story again…?'

The lieutenant smiled as if reading his thoughts. "Don't be surprised, kid. Major Xingluo is always like that—strict and by the book during missions. And don't be surprised by our ranks either. In the Blood God Legion, everything is based on strength and merit—not age. I'm administrative staff. My husband serves here, so I'm effectively a military spouse. If you pass the assessment, you'll learn the rules here soon enough."

She stood and added, "Come with me. It's been a while since we've had a new recruit. Pretty boy, let me remind you—no matter where you're from or what your background is, don't get cocky. This isn't an ordinary army. Everyone recommended to this place is a prodigy. But only a third make it through."

Gu You asked, "Are we starting the assessment now? No registration?"

The lieutenant replied, "No need. You already proved your identity. If you hadn't, you wouldn't be here. And registering is meaningless before you've passed. As for why we start immediately—simple: an enemy won't wait for you to be ready."

She led him out of the room into what looked like a warehouse.

"You may choose any weapon here. Keep in mind—during your assessment, soul power cannot be used. You'll be relying solely on your body and these weapons. Choose one that suits you."

The warehouse was packed with all kinds of weapons and gear, including many soul-guided modern weapons—beam rifles, handheld soul cannons, and more. They were all portable and clearly designed for solo combat.

Of all these tools, Gu You could only recognize about a third. But anything he could identify—he could definitely use.

As he carefully examined the options…
