"This is an order."
"Then... alright..."
Long Yuxue said, "You're probably very curious. Why is there a legion like ours stationed in a place like the Endless Mountains, where the terrain is treacherous and living conditions are harsh?"
Gu You nodded. He generally knew the reason, but he couldn't explain the full details.
To ordinary people, the Endless Mountains were considered the far western edge of the continent. According to the map, once you crossed the Endless Mountains, you'd quickly reach the western coastline—the most desolate area on the entire continent, mostly because of the natural barrier posed by these mountains.
Off the western coast, there were no active or destructive sea soul beasts. That area was practically devoid of human life. Yet despite that, the Blood God Legion was one of the most elite forces on the continent.
Why would such an elite legion be stationed here? After that public military drill years ago, many speculations had emerged among the people of the Douluo mainland—but most of them were wildly inaccurate.
Long Yuxue continued, "The Blood God Legion was established 6,300 years ago. It's existed for millennia, yet very few people on the continent know about us. That's because our existence is fundamentally different from that of ordinary soldiers. We carry a responsibility. A mission. Generations of warriors in the Blood God Legion have silently guarded the entire Douluo continent."
Gu You listened intently.
A trace of nostalgia flickered in Long Yuxue's eyes as she went on. "The reason we guard this place is because, long ago, a massive disaster occurred here."
"You should know that these mountains we're in were not originally part of the Douluo Continent. They came along with the landmass of the Sun-Moon Continent due to tectonic shifts. In other words, this area once belonged to the Sun-Moon Continent. When the two continents collided and merged, the resulting landmass doubled in size. Thousands of years ago, due to cultural conflicts, war broke out. Eventually the continent unified, and over time, the Federation took shape."
"I don't know whether it was due to the collision of the two continents, but a spatial distortion appeared within the Endless Mountains. A strange dimensional passageway was discovered here. To put it simply, imagine this space we live in is just one pocket of existence. Beyond it, in the universe, there are countless other worlds, countless other planets filled with life. A spatial rift could shorten the distance between two separate dimensions, even allowing travel between faraway realms through this tunnel. Do you understand?"
"I do." Gu You nodded. 'That's why Tang San's millennia-long plan eventually came to fruition—sacrificing countless lives to allow the Douluo Plane to evolve.'
'It might be unfair in the short term, but from a long-term perspective, the evolution of the Douluo Plane was necessary.'
'But even if the Douluo Plane didn't evolve, human soul technology would eventually reach outer space, seeking the eternal darkness among the stars.'
Long Yuxue said, "And so, a spatial tunnel formed within the Endless Mountains. At first, the tunnel was small, and this place was so remote that no one discovered it. But as time passed, the tunnel grew. Beings from another plane started crossing into our world. We call these creatures 'Abyssal Beasts.'"
Gu You nodded thoughtfully. "So, the creatures I encountered during the assessment were Abyssal Beasts?"
"Smart. Exactly," Long Yuxue affirmed. "When the Abyssal Beasts began pouring into the Endless Mountains 6,300 years ago and expanding outward, a catastrophic disaster struck. Because it happened in the far western wilderness—sparsely populated—and the Federation deliberately suppressed information, very few people ever found out."
"Abyssal Beasts are defined by destruction and consumption. They devour all life, whether animal or plant. Like a swarm of locusts, they leave nothing behind. In a short time, they wiped out every living thing in the entire Endless Mountain range."
"Fortunately, at the time, the Federation's technology had developed enough to detect them early. Their presence was discovered before the disaster spread inland. The Federation mobilized over two-thirds of its military to fight back. Supported by the combined forces of Shrek Academy, Tang Sect, the Spirit Pagoda, and the Hall of War Gods, and aided by eleven mecha legions and countless stationary soul-guided cannon shells, they drove the Abyssal Beasts back through the rift."
"In that battle alone, more than two hundred thousand people died. The Tang Sect's Douluo Hall Head of that generation perished while fighting one of the Abyssal Plane's monarchs. Four of that era's Shrek Seven Monsters fell. Ten of the Hall of War Gods' eighteen titled War Gods died. The Spirit Pagoda lost three of its four Spirit Transmitters, and among the Hall's principal leaders, one died and one was severely wounded. It was a brutally tragic battle."
Gu You inhaled sharply. He couldn't even imagine it. 'If just one war of containment cost this many lives, how many have died in the thousands of years since? No one could know.'
'The strength of the four great continental organizations must have been immense. Based on what Long Yuxue said, at least thirty Titled Douluo-level experts participated in that battle.'
'And that's just what was known. There must have been far more nameless Title Douluo, Super Douluo, and even Limit Douluo involved—those who fought and died in silence.'
"Their sacrifices were not in vain. The Abyssal Beasts were forced back into their plane. Of the seven Abyssal Monarchs, five were slain in that battle. The Abyssal Emperor—the strongest of them—was severely wounded by the joint efforts of the Tang Sect's Douluo Hall Head and the leader of the Sea God Pavilion at Shrek Academy, who was also head of the Shrek Seven Monsters. Countless other Abyssal creatures were destroyed. Afterward, our predecessors managed to seal the spatial rift. While they couldn't completely shut it, creatures above the king level could no longer pass through easily."
"And that was when the Blood God Legion was formed—initiated by the four major organizations, with one mission: to guard the rift and prevent the Abyssal Beasts from returning."
"As for where the Abyssal Plane lies, we have no idea. But we do know that Abyssal Beasts are terrifyingly strong. The one you faced—Momei—was a lord-class Abyssal Beast. That enormous Be'an you fought? Only a commander-class."
