Chapter 277 - Chapter 277: An Unquenchable Hunger

"Be'an is only a commander-class Abyssal creature. For the past six thousand years, the Abyssal Beasts have never stopped trying to invade our world. They've been attacking the seal continuously, and we've been doing everything we can to defend it."

Gu You said, "Then it's simple. The military merit you're talking about—it's earned through fighting Abyssal Beasts, right?"

"That's right," Long Yuxue replied. "The cavern you saw during the assessment was modeled after an Abyssal cave. The environment was simulated with about seventy to eighty percent accuracy. Inside those caves, due to spatial interference from the portal, our martial souls are severely weakened. It's not that they're completely unusable, but they're almost nullified. That's why you couldn't use soul power during your test. With current technology, our spatial shielding devices can only allow limited martial soul use for short durations."

Gu You nodded. "I see. No wonder. So, after the special training, I'll start engaging in actual combat against Abyssal creatures? And the more I kill, the more merit I accumulate?"

Long Yuxue nodded. "That's the general idea. But you're in the Special Operations Division—it's a little different from the frontline combat units."

Gu You asked, "Ma'am, can I request to be transferred to a combat unit? I want to fight on the front lines."

Seeing the determination in Gu You's eyes, Long Yuxue raised her eyebrows slightly. As a female soldier, what she admired had never been mere good looks—it was those with strength and resolve.

Undeniably, Gu You had both. During the assessment, the simulated environment was indistinguishable from reality. Especially in his fight against Momei—despite her speed leaving her no time to react—Gu You still effortlessly took her down. His strength far surpassed others his age.

So Long Yuxue didn't doubt his words in the slightest.

"No, you're mistaken. Compared to combat troops, we actually have more opportunities to engage Abyssal Beasts. Do you know what the Special Operations Division does?" she asked.

Gu You shook his head. He had no understanding of military structure.

Long Yuxue explained, "Our primary role is executing special missions. The day you saw me guarding the perimeter of the camp, I was filling in for a friend—it wasn't actually my job. Our main responsibility is reconnaissance, gathering data and samples for the research institute."

"Combat troops take shifts—rotating, resting, resupplying. And the Abyssal Beasts don't attack constantly. Their main duty is to guard the seal and prevent any creature from slipping through. But for us in Special Ops, our tasks focus on deep reconnaissance. We go to the outer limits near the spatial rift. Sometimes, we even enter the Abyssal Plane itself to gather intel. If we discover a new species and bring back a sample, it's a major accomplishment. So if you want to rise in rank quickly, this division is your best bet—at least in the early stages."

Gu You asked curiously, "Why only in the early stages?"

Long Yuxue replied, "Before you hit a certain rank, individual merit is the key. But once you reach the rank of lieutenant colonel and above, your ability to command and lead becomes crucial. High-ranking officers must be capable of leadership. Otherwise, even if they have the power, they'll only exist in name—like honorary consultants. They won't be allowed to command troops directly."

"Take Jiang Wuyue, for example. He started in Special Ops, but after reaching major, he transferred to a combat unit and was promoted to a commanding role in just two years. His merit growth skyrocketed. If you'd eaten like you did yesterday under my command, I wouldn't be able to afford it."

Gu You narrowed his eyes. "So you're saying my best path is to stay in Special Ops until I reach major, then transfer to combat?"

"Exactly. It's the most efficient route for accumulating merit. Of course, not everyone can pull it off—you need real strength. But you've already proven yourself in the assessment. Over the next month, I'll further evaluate you and arrange your missions accordingly. The beauty of Special Ops is that we're not restricted by large-scale deployments. We can enter the rift and conduct recon or combat missions anytime."

"I understand," Gu You nodded.

After listening to her explanation, he now had a much deeper understanding of the Blood God Legion. And at that moment, he could feel the Golden Dragon Spear trembling inside him.

That feeling—it was pure desire.

'So hungry. So very hungry.'

"I alone can pierce through the Abyssal horde," Gu You muttered under his breath.

"What did you say?" Long Yuxue raised an eyebrow.

"Nothing. Please continue."

Long Yuxue's tone hardened. "You are indeed strong, but let me remind you—never become arrogant. Abyssal Beasts are more terrifying than you think. Unlike simulations, you don't get a second chance in real combat. Understand?"

"Yes," Gu You replied seriously.

Long Yuxue's face softened slightly. "Now, I'll give you a briefing on what we currently know about the Abyssal Plane and the various types of Abyssal creatures."

Long Yuxue was a good instructor. Her explanations were detailed, and Gu You listened attentively. Whenever he had a question, she would answer it patiently.

As he gained a deeper understanding of the Abyssal Plane, Gu You became increasingly impressed by the Blood God Legion. According to Long Yuxue, less than half of the soldiers who served a full ten-year term in the Legion ever returned.

Despite advancements in human technology and more experience combating the Abyss, casualties were still unavoidable.

Gu You also learned that, contrary to expectations, the Blood God Legion wasn't lacking in supplies. The Federation heavily supported them. The equipment used here was the best humanity had to offer—cutting-edge technology and weaponry.

He suspected that the only weapon the Legion hadn't yet deployed was a Class-12 Godslayer Soul Cannon.

But if the survival of the Douluo Plane ever came into question, even that cannon might be used.

To even apply for the Blood God Legion, one needed to have a cultivation level of at least four soul rings…
