If the abyssal passage could not be defended, the human world would be plunged into catastrophe. No one knew how many lives would be lost in a war against the abyssal creatures.
Even though, compared to six thousand years ago, human technology had advanced rapidly, with mechas and soul tools now far beyond what existed back then, the terrifying nature of the abyssal creatures had left a scar in the pages of history too deep to forget.
'No matter what, they must be stopped!'
The warriors still inside the tunnel—those who hadn't self-destructed—finally all retreated to the tunnel's exit. They didn't flee, but immediately began a counteroffensive, reinforcing the defensive perimeter at the mouth of the abyssal passage.
At that moment, every member of the Blood God Legion had only one thought: to stop the abyssal creatures at all costs, to defeat their enemies no matter what it took. They could not allow a single one to break through.
In just a short time, out of the more than three thousand Blood God warriors originally guarding the tunnel, over four hundred had already fallen during the retreat. That was nearly the total number of casualties from the past hundred years combined. For the Blood God Legion, this was a devastating price.
Watching their comrades self-destruct one after another to block the enemy's advance, the soldiers' eyes turned red with fury. The euphoria brought by the double championship had completely turned into wrath.
They poured out their attacks with everything they had, blasting back the oncoming waves of abyssal enemies. One after another, the creatures burst into dark mist, transforming into abyssal energy that was absorbed back into the tunnel.
'Human life, once gone, cannot be recovered.'
Training a Blood God warrior was no simple feat. But the abyssal creatures—once killed—had their energy recycled back into the abyss, where it would soon birth new monsters.
Even knowing this, the Blood God warriors had no other choice. All they could do was hold the line with every ounce of strength they had.
Despite their determination, what filled their hearts most was despair.
Six thousand years ago, it had taken the combined might of nearly the entire continent to drive the abyssal invaders back, and even then, the price had been immense. Now, they were alone—just the tens of thousands in the Blood God Legion. Could they possibly hold the line against this unexpected eruption from the abyss?
No one knew. But no one hesitated to give everything they had.
This was a battle to the death. There was no retreat—because retreat wasn't an option. If the abyssal passage fell, there would be nowhere to run.
They had all seen firsthand the horror of abyssal creatures. It was precisely because of this that they were even more determined to protect their homeland. Most of their families were in the Blood God Legion's base. Cowardice would only bring destruction to those they loved.
The piercing alarm sirens echoed through the entire base. One squad after another of white-armored soldiers moved in formation toward the abyssal passage.
"Requesting support! Requesting support! Massive abyssal surge from the main tunnel! Immediate support from heavy-class weapons needed! Requesting doomsday-class weaponry! Hurry!"
The distress signals had already been transmitted. The vice commander of the Ironblood Regiment hovered at the mouth of the tunnel in his black-rank mecha, his eyes sharp as he watched the monsters below.
The main tunnel exit had the densest defenses. With the crisscrossing fire of soul-guided cannons, not even the bloodthirsty abyssal creatures could break through easily.
But the vice commander's expression only darkened. Under the soul-guided rays and cannon light, he clearly saw the density of abyssal creatures inside the tunnel continuing to increase, their numbers multiplying rapidly.
They couldn't yet use high-level soul cannon shells. If they exploded, they wouldn't just take out the abyssal creatures—they'd kill their own warriors too.
All of the soul tool installations in place were currently operating at full effectiveness. Using explosive-level firepower would destroy them all.
Even if they were desperate enough to consider it as a strategic deterrent, it wouldn't work. Abyssal creatures could revive. The Blood God soldiers could not...
At first, it had only been four-clawed and six-clawed bat monsters flying out of the tunnel. Now, various crawling abyssal creatures had begun to scale the tunnel walls. More and more twisted forms were appearing.
Some of the larger ones remained below, simply staring up at the exit with cold, eerie eyes. They weren't charging—yet. It was as if they were waiting for something.
"Raaaagh—!" A furious roar suddenly echoed from deep within the abyssal passage.
The abyssal tide split open, and the hundred-meter-tall Six-Clawed Demon Emperor emerged from the depths, surrounded by swarms of abyssal beasts.
It twisted its body violently. Countless dark-red orbs burst forth, streaking toward the tunnel exit like meteors. At the same time, a massive pair of bat wings unfurled behind it, spanning more than two hundred meters. With a single flap, the monster launched itself toward the exit.
"Overdrive mode!" shouted the vice commander without hesitation. But deep down, his heart sank.
There was no doubt. This massive creature was no ordinary abyssal beast. In all his years of fighting, he had never seen anything like it. That could only mean one thing—it was one of the abyssal monarchs. One of the 108 Abyssal Kings, personally descending upon the battlefield.
This wasn't a projection. This was its true body.
Every monarch of the abyssal plane had power on par with a Super Douluo—some were even stronger. Their physical bodies far surpassed what humans could endure.
A thunderous explosion rocked the tunnel as the soul-guided ray network lit up. The red orbs from the Demon Emperor were intercepted mid-air, exploding in bursts of light. But the Demon Emperor's colossal form smashed directly into the web of beams.
Flashes of light and cannon blasts struck its armored body, igniting it in flames and halting its momentum. Still, the monster served its purpose—it shielded the next wave of abyssal creatures.
Masses of creatures surged up from all sides, racing through the gap it had opened.
"High-yield charges!" the vice commander ordered quickly.
Blazing white lightballs exploded in the tunnel's depths, scorching the area in waves. Even the mighty Six-Clawed Demon Emperor couldn't withstand such intense fire for long. It was forced to retreat, its body crashing downward to avoid further bombardment.
The vice commander exhaled a heavy breath.
'At least our preparations weren't wasted. This line of defense was designed to stop even demigods...'
