Chapter 27 - Half A Million Dollars

"What the fuck are you up to, Eva?" Alex's voice came next, laced with fear disguised as fury. Her heart stuttered.

"Alex?" she whispered, barely audible, her throat raw from screaming, from trauma. Her hand, shaking violently, reached toward the phone the man was holding out. She was certain her brain was playing cruel tricks. But no—it was real. He was real. His voice grounded her in a way nothing else could.

"Go with the damned man right now." His tone was sharp but underlined with terror. "He'll take you to the Soho apartment. I'll be there in a few minutes."

There was no time to question, no time to break down. She nodded mutely, and the man who had rescued her helped her gently to her feet. Her legs buckled under her weight, and she clung to him for a second longer than necessary, her muscles trembling with fear.
