"Uh…yes!" Eva shot back instantly, sitting up with a sharpness that sent the sheets tumbling around her. She scrambled off him. "Exactly! That was the deal. That was you setting the boundaries. What brought this on?" She pressed a hand against her temple as if she could massage sense into the moment. "I mean, I am flattered, Alex, really I am, but…is this because I said I was going to leave the penthouse?"
"It feels wrong," Alex said simply. His eyes followed her as though she was the only anchor keeping him sane. "I've always been one to follow my gut." It was true—his instincts had built his empire, had turned him into the ruthless man everyone else feared. And now that same gut, the one he trusted more than anything, was screaming that letting her walk away was unbearable.
Eva crossed her arms over her chest, glaring at him. "You just want to keep me close. Control me. That's what this is."
