Iris POV
I stumble down the rutted track road, my breath ragged, my legs burning at my running pace. Fear pulses through me, gnawing at my insides. No matter how fast I run, or how far I push myself, I can still feel the weight of their pursuit on me, as if they were coming right after me. My scent will lead them straight to me. I have to kill it, make it go dormant or anything, but how?
The thought glares at me, mocking my panic as I try to think through the haze of terror when suddenly, my foot catches on a gnarled root, and I pitch forward, my hands scraping against the dirt as I hit the ground hard. Pain shoots through my palms, but it's drowned out by the sudden, sickening thud of multiple heartbeats and voices surrounding me.
