Chapter 49 - Feeling Of Regret

Mo Yiren shook his head. "The damn Beast Hall dares take us lightly, the administration dares take us lightly. Internal Affairs! External Affairs! Does everyone forget who provides the Spirit Elixirs? Do they just assume the elixirs will arrive on their doorstep with no effort?"

"You have a point. Perhaps there is more going on. One of the Sixth Steward's enemies could even be behind it." Mo Seris said, quickly yielding.

"No, no, your first instinct was probably correct," Mo Yiren said. "This is not the first time I have noticed such patterns. The current Mo Family has grown complacent. Too much wealth is not a good thing, it eats at our foundation, our very reason for living. What is there to strive for if you are already at the top?

"It is natural for there to be lazy incompetents who are promoted. In difficult times, it is hard to imagine doing so, but when there is no difficulty, who wouldn't accept bribes or protect a family member?

"Ah, it is not like the old days! Back then, we fought and scrapped for everything. There is nothing like desperation to produce hard workers! Necessity! What a wonderful thing!

"But these new generations, your generation, they are all just dissolute young masters! What are they good for?"

Mo Seris agreed.

While they were speaking, the nurse finally managed to get Naro to latch onto her breast, and the feeding was proceeding normally. Seeing this, Mo Yiren relaxed, returning his attention back to his desk.

At that, the conversation came to a natural conclusion, much to Mo Seris's relief. He was prepared to leave, when a question suddenly popped into his mind.

He no longer dared to think about legendary physiques - that was just a flight of fancy. Still, he continued to harbor hopes that the infant was special. And who had more experience with strange cases than the old man in front of him?

It was from his acknowledgement of the old man's experience that his question came.

But, Mo Seris was still indecisive. The Flower Visiting Pavilion beckoned.

On one hand, Mo Yiren had enormous expertise. On the other, it seemed that the old man was senile today, giving lectures instead of straight answers.

Mo Seris shifted the weight on his feet. He wanted to leave, and yet, the question was truly important to him.

And if he asked it with directness and specificity, couldn't he make Mo Yiren answer in a straightforward way?

Mo Yiren looked up. He was not an idiot. It was obvious that Mo Seris was lingering, with some shiftiness in his behavior.

"I can see you have a question," he said, feeling indulgent. "Why don't you speak?"

Mo Yiren's words pushed Mo Seris over the brink, making the decision for him. He cleared his throat.

"Mo Yiren, you have seen far more deliveries than I have. There have been many that underwent further testing. What was the outcome of that testing for the other cases that were most similar to this one?" As Mo Seris finished speaking, he immediately regretted his wording and rushed to clarify. "I understand that no two cases are the same, perhaps this one being more different than most, but surely there are similarities with others."

Mo Yiren immediately began to ponder the question, giving Mo Seris a bad premonition.

A feeling of regret immediately blossomed in his stomach.

After all, the first lecture had been unavoidable, but this time, it was Mo Seris's own doing. Asking the question directly, what had he expected? For the sky to turn purple, and the seasons to reverse?

Why had he asked a question when Mo Yiren was in one of his senile moods?

I should have just left!

As these thoughts flickered through Mo Seris's head, Mo Yiren finished thinking and spoke up.
