POV: Cade
I watched Ember collapse from giving too much energy to Hope and knew we had seconds to move.
"There!" I pointed to three government helicopters sitting on the landing pad. "That's our way out!"
"You know how to fly a helicopter?" Ash asked while carrying both Ember and Hope.
"How hard can it be?"
"That's not reassuring!"
We ran toward the helicopters while the facility burned behind us. Marcus and his pack were holding off the remaining guards, buying us time to escape.
"Cade!" Marcus shouted. "Take Tommy with you!"
Tommy ran over, his face covered in soot but his eyes bright with excitement.
"That was so cool! Did you see me hit that guard with the fire extinguisher?"
"Very impressive, kid. Now get in the helicopter."
Dr. Chen helped Ash load Ember and the children into the back seats while I climbed into the pilot's chair.
"Please tell me you actually know how to fly this thing," Dr. Chen said nervously.
"I took flying lessons once. For regular planes."
