Chapter 99 - Survival Mode

POV: Ash

"Daddy Ash, I'm hungry again," Hunter whispered for the third time that morning.

I looked at the six fish I'd caught from the stream and knew they wouldn't be enough to feed seven people properly.

"I know, buddy. I'm working on it."

We'd been living in the Montana wilderness for two weeks since the earth elemental saved us. Two weeks of hiding from government search teams, hunting for food, and trying to keep everyone alive.

"Any sign of helicopters?" Cade called from his lookout position on the ridge above our camp.

"Nothing yet," I replied. "But they'll be back."

They always came back. Every few days, government helicopters would sweep through the area, searching for us with heat sensors and tracking equipment.

"How's Ember?" Cade climbed down to join me.

"Still weak. Giving Hope her energy nearly killed her."

"And the kids?"

"Getting stronger every day. Their powers are slowly regenerating."

"That's good news at least."
