Chapter 111 - Catching a Demon

"This is just my luck."

On the sidewalk of a Metropolis street.

The streetlights lining the road at night cast a soft glow on the young men and women.

Zatanna tightened her white shirt, regretting that she was wearing so little.

Police cars and fire trucks occasionally sped past with their sirens blaring. Zatanna sighed, "Luckily, I used a Confusion Spell on that girl before she woke up. She won't remember what we look like."

"A wise choice."

Kino rubbed his neck with one hand, his eyes gleaming, "What's the plan now?"

Zatanna rolled her eyes. "How?"

"Go home and sleep, of course. Not only was it a wasted trip, but I also wasted a lot of Mana."

Like other mages, Zatanna didn't like sticking her nose into other people's business, especially when it involved the Children of Hell and all that nonsense.

To put it in the words of a certain country, "When the sky falls, the tall ones hold it up."

There were so many powerful mages in the magic world; Zatanna didn't think she was indispensable.

"Zzzt..."

The light flickered, and electricity groaned.

The streetlights above seemed to be disturbed by some strange magnetic field, constantly flickering, the light flashing like a strobe light in a disco, making it hard to see.

Apparently, a certain critical point had been reached.

With a loud "bang," the lamp shades on both sides, front and back, shattered.

A vast and dense curtain of darkness instantly enveloped the street.

"Something's wrong!"

As a master of magic, Zatanna was the first to notice the anomaly. The girl's originally gentle brow furrowed, her face turning grim. "We're being watched."

"Buzzing~"

All around, a dense and frequent buzzing sound echoed, as if thousands of insects were flapping their wings.

Kino narrowed his eyes slightly, peering through the ink-like darkness. Thousands of green, oily flies were swarming towards them, their wings whirring.

"Shining Light!" Zatanna formed a "mouth" seal with her hands.

Purple Mana surged, and in the next instant, intense white light illuminated the entire street, revealing the figures hidden in the darkness.

Thousands of flies swirled, weaving together and then transforming into a terrifying humanoid creature.

This mass of writhing, humanoid form, composed of countless flies, sketched out a demonic face, which roared at Kino and Zatanna: "Magicians, this is not a matter for you to be involved in!"

"Now, you will pay the price."

With that, the insectoid figure suddenly exploded, and countless insects with flapping wings opened their tiny mandibles, from which flowed a greenish, unknown liquid.

Watching the demon controlling the swarm of insects, howling towards them, Zatanna's expression turned grim. She raised her hand, conjuring an invisible Light Shield, and explained to Kino: "This thing is a demon under Beelzebub's command."

"They can control insects like flies on Earth and attach the poison in their bodies to them. Just one bite can poison a strong man."

A huge, ugly swarm of insects roared, resembling a tornado of bugs, as they charged towards the two.

Just as the insect army was about to make contact, a blazing white Mana Light Shield appeared in front of Zatanna.

Crack! Crack! Crack!

Countless insects slammed into the magical Mana shield. Their small, weak bodies shattered, exploding. Their colorful insect guts splattered onto the shield, creating a thick layer of disgusting green filth, like a rain of insects.

Zatanna struggled to resist, raising her hands to control the Light Shield. But the swarm seemed endless, relentlessly attacking the white shield.

Kino watched the flickering shield and Zatanna's difficult expression.

She didn't seem like she could hold on much longer.

"Zatanna." Kino stepped forward and patted the girl's shoulder. "Drop the Light Shield."

"Are you sure?"

Zatanna gritted her teeth, struggling to hold on. "I know your ability to shoot heat vision from your eyes is strong, but there are too many insects here, almost taking up the entire street."

"And if any of those bugs bite us, we're dead instantly."

The boy smiled, looking seriously into the girl's eyes, "Of course, I'm certain."

"Trust me."

"Alright."

Zatanna gritted her teeth again. She lowered her hands, and the next moment, the unhindered swarm of insects roared forward, bringing with them a stench and a gust of wind, rushing towards Kino and Zatanna.

Hidden among the myriad insects, the demon wore a mocking smile. It seemed to already see the two exorcists' miserable deaths.

It saw the tall male take a slow step forward.

It saw his clear blue eyes light up with a blue glow.

"Buzz!"

A brilliant blue light suddenly bloomed, carrying an extreme chill and cold air that enveloped a blue beam, illuminating the entire street.

Streetlights, roads, and even insects flying in the air froze the instant the icy beam swept past, immediately encased in crystal-clear ice.

Thousands of miles frozen, all things frozen.

Zatanna didn't know when her jaw had dropped. The girl's wide mouth exhaled white puffs of warm breath.

The scene before her was like a dream.

The ice-covered concrete road was like an ice field from a fairy tale, shimmering with a crystal-clear luster. It echoed the starry sky above, and together with the boy standing on the ice, it sketched a beautiful picture.

However, the night wind carried the cold air, causing Zatanna to sneeze.

She glanced at Kino, her mood complex.

She found that she understood her playmate less and less. It seemed that he himself was a huge mystery, and that no one could enter his heart.

Kino looked at a large lump of flies frozen into ice.

The girl was somewhat dissatisfied that the damned demons had ruined this aesthetic. A trace of anger flashed in Zatanna's beautiful eyes.

These damned demons! "Which one is the real one?"

Kino closed his eyes, and then opened them again, the dazzling blue light disappearing.

"Let me take a look." Zatanna waved her small hand to cast a spell.

A wisp of purple light flew out from her palm, circled in the cold air, and then burrowed into one of the thousands of insects.

"That's it!"

Zatanna pointed at the fly marked with threads of magic.

Her gaze pierced through the ice, locking onto the demon.

This fly was much larger than the others, and more importantly, its compound eyes were crimson, which was quite unusual.

"Get a bottle," Kino said, pressing his hand against the ice.

The solid, frigid Extreme Ice shattered easily under his fingers.

Kino's right hand was like a sharp ice pick, cutting around the ice-encased fly demon. He quickly held the ice containing the demon in his palm.

Zatanna fetched a glass, and Kino dropped the ice into it. Then, Zatanna cast a binding sealing spell.

Zatanna swirled the glass in her hand, watching a fly at the bottle's lip, her expression troubled: "We're being targeted by Mammon's underlings. Those demons won't let us off easily."

"Don't worry."

Kino stared at his own fingers, a golden card clutched between them: "Tell me, if I kill Mammon, will Lucifer come knocking?"

Since he couldn't get anything from God, replicating Lucifer's power, who could stand up to God, wasn't a bad idea.

"Are you crazy?"

Zatanna was incredulous.

Kino chuckled, looking into the girl's eyes: "No, I'm serious."
