The wooden floor of the living room, the overturned chairs, and the shattered walls all pointed to the involvement of something supernatural.
"Snap."
Constantine pocketed the woman's lighter and lit a cigarette.
He exhaled a puff of smoke, sniffing the air for the telltale scent of sulfur: "A demon took him."
Zatanna's expression darkened. The girl stamped her foot in agitation, her high heels clicking on the floor: "What do we do now? We have to find her."
Zatanna didn't want to wake up tomorrow and find the streets crawling with disgusting demons.
"Quiet, both of you."
Gino held up a finger, signaling for silence.
"It's not too late."
"If we're careful enough."
Gino inhaled deeply. In the next instant, everything around him began to turn transparent in his vision, until it reverted to its most basic, transparent line form.
His gaze swept over the ceiling. The woman's upstairs neighbor was a shut-in, furiously showing off his craftsmanship on his computer.
His gaze passed through the ceiling and into the depths of the closet. The lace materials and some interesting little toys in the closet were quite suggestive.
Gino lowered his head. Soon, a simple, old coin in the corner of a floor crack caught the young man's attention.
"Found it."
Gino strode towards the corner, bent down, and picked up a coin. It was copper-colored, and both sides were engraved with strange demonic patterns.
"What is this thing?"
Different professions have their own specializations, and professional matters still require professionals to handle them.
Constantine stepped forward, snatching the coin before Zatanna could. He was hired by Gino and needed to prove his worth, or else what if his employer didn't pay?
Constantine picked up the coin and examined it closely under the overhead light. A grotesque demon's head was engraved on the brass surface.
Beneath the head, a short phrase was inscribed in Latin.
"It's the demon Balthazar."
Constantine dropped his cigarette and stomped it out, exhaling a smoke ring.
"One of Satan's lackeys in the human world."
"Do you know where he is?"
"Heh heh~"
The top floor of a skyscraper.
A group of men and women, young and old, dressed in suits, gathered there.
A business elite with a face that resembled an Indian man stood on the conference room stage. Speaking in fluent English with a distinct curry accent, he addressed the demons below, "Lord Mammon is about to descend to the human world."
He spread his arms wide, his tone impassioned, "He will bring blood and slaughter to this world, and bring everything under his command!"
"And as loyal followers of Lord Mammon,"
"We will manage this world for him!"
Before he could finish his words, excited shouts erupted from the demons below.
"That's right! Enslave these humans!"
"Let them become our food!"
"Tear open their chests and taste them!"
The demons' eyes glowed red, a crimson gleam flickering within them.
They were already impatient.
"I declare!"
Balthazar spread his arms wide.
"The ritual begins!"
Following Balthazar's words, several red-eyed demons carried a woman bound with ropes into the meeting hall.
Various demons stared at the woman with greedy eyes.
The strong divinity emanating from her made them want to pounce on her and feast immediately.
But Mammon's reputation kept these demons from overstepping.
They passed her along, carrying the unconscious Angela towards the podium where Balthazar stood.
The constant jostling and shaking caused Angela to slowly awaken.
The air around her was filled with the strong, foul stench of sulfur.
She saw pairs of blood-red eyes watching her.
"Let me go, let me go!"
She struggled frantically, terror and despair spreading through the woman's heart. She fought with all her might, but the sturdy ropes binding her feet prevented her from moving an inch.
Her breathing quickened, fear spreading.
The demons all let out low, sinister laughs.
Everyone knew what this girl was about to experience.
The spear that had been used to kill Jesus would pierce her belly, allowing the son of Satan to descend into the world.
Bang!
Angela was thrown roughly onto the platform.
"Let's begin!"
Balthazar adjusted his suit and tie, giving Angela a smile that was all for show. "Don't worry, death is but a moment."
He extended his index finger and sliced his palm.
"Drip, drip~"
Dark brown blood dripped onto the floor, and the air filled with the pungent smell of sulfur.
The other demons followed their leader's example, cutting their own palms.
As the brown, pus-like blood on the floor increased, it eventually covered the entire surface, and a deep red pentagram began to glow on the floor.
"Pff, cough!"
Angela watched in despair as the brown demon blood rose, covering her ears, then her cheeks.
Her body was boiling, burning.
Excruciating pain erupted from her abdomen. Angela struggled to lift her head, and she saw, horrified, a faceless head writhing wildly on her stomach, seemingly desperate to burst out, like a monster from a horror movie.
As the water level rose, the suffocation of drowning caused her body to thrash involuntarily. She desperately wanted to live, but the demons in the room clearly wouldn't give her that chance.
"Hold her down!"
Several demons sneered, seizing the woman's limbs.
Balthazar grinned, then picked up a white cloth from the table.
He gently lifted the cloth, revealing a spearhead radiating a chilling aura, which Balthazar then grasped.
The demon's face twisted into a playful smile. "The Spear of Longinus, the spear that pierced Jesus, the Unholy Spear."
He seemed to mutter to himself, "Now, it's your turn!"
As the demon's murmur faded, the atmosphere in the hall, which had been thick with an evil aura, suddenly froze.
A wave of pure, benevolent energy descended upon the space.
"Roar!"
The demons below roared in fury.
They sensed the presence of angels and grew restless.
In an instant, along with a flash of holy light, many of the demons in the room were vaporized by the overwhelming divine energy, turning to ash and disappearing.
"Whoosh~"
A pair of jet-black wings unfurled, and Gabriel, clad in a white angelic robe, descended from the sky.
Balthazar braced a black barrier with both hands to block the holy light, which sizzled as it struck the barrier.
"Damn angel, put away your holy light."
"You vile creature, hand over the Spear of Longinus."
Gabriel stood barefoot on the ground, and the blood on the ground scattered, seemingly fearing the Archangel.
Gabriel's face was serene and solemn.
She retracted the wings behind her.
"Heh."
Balthazar sneered as he tossed the spearhead aside, mocking, "Who would have thought that God's most loyal shepherd dog would betray Him."
"This isn't betrayal. Father is too merciful to humanity." Gabriel gently picked up the spearhead. "Those who are deeply sinful only need to pray and repent to enter God's embrace."
"Too merciful."
Gabriel repeated the words, spearhead in hand, and approached Angela, who was unconscious and soaking in a pool of blood.
"It's time for the guilty to be punished!"
Gabriel's gaze was firm. With both hands, he gripped the spearhead and thrust it down. The monster in the woman's belly seemed to sense it, and its struggles intensified.
The demon child, about to be born!
