Morning came, and I couldn't stop grinning. Last night was… well, let's just say I'm not a sage anymore. After our sessions—yeah, plural, thank you very much—we lay there and talked about the future. We decided we'd live together now. I mean, why not? It's the apocalypse. People vanish in the blink of an eye, walkers lurk everywhere, and tomorrow isn't promised.

Besides, I had promised the old man before he died that I'd give him a grandchild. Guess I'm finally on the right track with that.

I turned to Taylor, her face soft and peaceful as she slept. She looked so calm, like the world outside wasn't falling apart. I pulled the blanket up to her shoulders and kissed her forehead. Poor girl—after last night, no wonder she's exhausted. Can't blame her.

I chuckled to myself. "You did good, Marcus," I muttered quietly. Then I stood, stretching. Time to head out—because even after a night like that, survival waits for no one.

I came out of my bedroom feeling refreshed, my body still humming with energy from last night. As I made my way to the dining room, the familiar sound of clattering dishes and the smell of warm food greeted me. My chef and maid were already there, busy with their usual morning routine.

"From now on, make sure to prepare an extra portion of food every day," I told the chef casually. He simply gave a short nod of acknowledgment, though I could see his eyes flicker with curiosity.

Turning to the maid, I added, "Taylor is in my room. If she calls for something, make sure to assist her."

For a moment, both of them froze—my words clearly catching them off guard. Their surprise was almost amusing, but as expected, they composed themselves quickly and went back to work.

I sat down at the table, inhaling the aroma of breakfast. "Alright, before we eat, describe today's menu," I instructed.

The chef obliged, listing off the dishes one by one with his usual professional tone. Freshly baked bread, scrambled eggs with a pinch of herbs, dried meat strips, and a stew simmering on the side. While he explained, I noticed he was already preparing another set of plates—this one for Taylor. A small smile tugged at the corner of my lips.

She deserved it after last night.

I left my room and stepped out of the building, heading straight toward my office near the training grounds. Once inside, I slumped into my chair, letting out a long breath.

I've been doing this all wrong, I thought. Instead of wasting time hunting mutated walkers, why don't I just create them myself? Damn, I've been an idiot. If I'd realized this earlier, it would've saved me countless hours.

I sighed internally, annoyed at my past self. "Well, at least now I know," I muttered. "Guess that makes me… a late bloomer zombie scientist." I chuckled at my own joke, even if it was terrible.

Shaking my head, I leaned forward. "It's time to create a real structure of command. It can't always be me, Max, and Leo handling everything."

I looked at the two men before me, their eyes focused. "You've both been running the Federation tirelessly. From here on, I want you to start recruiting people in specialized fields — engineering, medicine, and management. I plan to establish official departments."

Max gave me a confident nod. "No problem, sir. I already have a few people in mind for management. Leave that to me."

"Good," I replied. "Also, inform Ray and Jessy that it's time they take on official positions. We'll finalize things tomorrow. Meet back here at nine a.m. sharp."

"Yes, sir," they said in unison before dispersing.

Alone again, I leaned back in my chair, a faint grin forming. I already know exactly which departments I'll create… this is where the real foundation of the Federation begins.

After that, I decided to exercise—just an easy warm-up to keep my body in shape. Three sets of stretches, then a solid 10 km run around the Federation grounds. The air was crisp, and every step reminded me why discipline was important, especially in today's world where strength and stamina often meant survival. By the time I returned, sweat clung to my shirt, but I wasn't done yet. I dropped down for 100 body squats, followed by 100 sit-ups, pushing through the burn until I finished the routine.

Catching my breath, I sat for a moment and let my thoughts wander. What should I do next? Should I head to the ranch and check on the livestock and supplies, or should I visit the orphanage in Virginia and see how the children were doing? Both were important in their own ways. I decided to leave the choice for after tomorrow's meeting—by then, things might be clearer.

Just then, someone snapped me out of my thoughts.

"Um, sir… excuse me," a soft voice said.

I turned to look—ah, it was the maid.

"What is it?" I asked.

"Taylor's awake, sir. She's been asking for you."

My eyes widened slightly. "She's awake? Where is she now?"

"She's with her friends," the maid replied.

"Hmm… take me to her, then."

"All right, sir," she said with a small nod.

As we started walking, I glanced at her. "What's your name again?"

She looked a little surprised. "Ah… it's Sara, sir."

"Alright, Sara. Lead the way."

Truthfully, the only reason I asked was because, despite seeing her almost every day since the outbreak began, I never actually knew her name.

Sara eventually led me to Taylor's old room, where she was sitting with her friends, Sheena and Alexia. The moment Taylor told them that she and I would now be staying together, the atmosphere shifted.

Sheena's glare could've cut through steel—her eyes practically screaming "Who the hell do you think you are?" Meanwhile, Alexia offered Taylor a supportive smile and even threw me a quick nod, clearly more the "encouraging best friend" type.

I didn't rise to Sheena's death-stare. No point in poking the bear right away. Instead, Taylor and I excused ourselves not long after, stepping outside for some fresh air.

We walked side by side, making small talk at first—about the Federation's situation, the state of things since the outbreak, even dumb little jokes here and there. But soon enough, the conversation turned warmer, deeper, as if we were trying to make up for all the time we had missed.
