Chapter 88 - Chapter 88

Rico looked at the dead end with a frown. "Did we… take a wrong turn?" Rico asked openly as he rubbed the back of his head.

"How?" Artemis chuckled as she looked back the way they came. "There were no turns. It was a straight path to get here." She pointed out and Rico looked back the way they came from and agreed with her.

Rico silently chuckled and then began walking back out. "We are coming back out." As they began moving he activated his Eagle vision. If there is a secret path he should be able to see it with this vision.

As they walked back he noticed that the wall at one part was fake. There were enemies waiting behind it. So he did not immediately react. Instead they walked past it and then he moved to the side and signaled for Artemis to do the same. She followed his order and looked across the rocky tunnel in confusion.

Then there was an almost inaudible creaking followed by some dust falling from the ceiling. Then a hidden door opened up and they could hear whispers coming from inside. He saw understanding come across Artemis' face.

"Are they gone?" One of them asked.

"Looks like they ran back to the entrance. We can push up and get them from behind. We could probably even surprise the police." The other one answered as they slowly moved down the tunnel.

"Shut up and let's go. If they report the tunnel is empty before we kill them then the police will know something is up." Another informed them as they quietly moved down the tunnel.

Artemis and Rico watched as five people moved past their position. Heading toward the entrance to the cave. Rico peeked out and saw no more were coming so he nodded at the entrance and Artemis nodded and moved to the hidden entrance with her riot shield up.

They slipped right in to find a large area that looked like a lobby. They could see that it had been turned into a makeshift armory room. There were a number of people in the room moving around boxes or cleaning their weapons. It looked like they were not prepared for them at all.

Artemis grinned and reached for the greataxe that was hanging off her back. "Hey Rico… about not being able to swing my weapon in such a small area…"

Rico scoffed, "this is not a small area. Go for it." Rico answered before spotting the farthest door of the room and running toward it before anyone even noticed them.

The first time they realized an enemy was in the room was when a body of one of their friends who had been cleaved in half flew through the room. The moment that happened, Rico began firing at any and all enemies that he could see as he dived behind cover where he ran face first into another enemy.

This one was a bearded man who dropped the box he was carrying and immediately went to grab Rico's laser pistol. Rico held it firmly pointed to the air as he grabbed the side of his head and slammed it into the metal shelf they were hidden behind.

Crack!

He went stiff and fell to the ground while bleeding from the side of his face. Rico pulled back from him but kicked the box he was carrying at another younger man who came around the corner with his rifle drawn and aimed at Rico. It slammed into his knees and he fell forward.

He collapsed over the small box and never saw the boot that Rico brought down on the back of his neck. The attack that broke the enemy's neck and killed them. Rico then looked around the edge to see Artemis was making a mess of the lobby. She was already covered in blood as she bashed an enemy with the riot shield and sent them careening into a wall and turning into a bloody paste.

"Coin, if you can hear me you have five more coming out through the cave entrance. Also inform the police that they can move in after those five are down. We have locked down an area they can set up." Rico announced as he watched the chaos unfold in the room.

There were about three more enemies left in the room. They just had to get rid of them and they would have this room secure. He heard the creaking of metal and glanced over to see a door being opened.

It was by someone with a messy appearance. He immediately fired at their head and then glanced in the room they came from. It was a hall and at the end of the hall were a number of people with weapons that were running his way.

Rico immediately began firing at them and ducked and moved back before returning fire. Rico moved to the side and the bullets went wide slamming into the door frame and door.

"Understood, give me a few minutes to take care of these people then I will send the police in to relieve you." Coin responded over the commlink. It seemed like she might be just as busy as they were.

Rico looked over to see Artemis slamming her riot shield into the head of the last living enemy in the room. Fortunately there were no more visible doors. Just an area behind a counter he had not taken a look at.

"Do you feel better?" Rico asked as he flinched as more gunshots hit the door and doorframe. He quickly fired blindly down the hall a few times in response.

"Yeah, actually. I feel a lot better." Artemis answered as she looked around. "What now?"

"Now we hold this position. I will keep them from getting back in from here. But looked behind the counter to see if there was another possible entrance they could use." Rico instructed as he crouched and then peaked around the corner and fired again. This time hitting a person that was trying to crawl along the floor. After he shot him the others seemed to immediately back up.
