Chapter 2 - Chapter Two: Things Just Got Worse

Amelia's POV

"You're fired!" The words kept replaying in my head like a bad episode from a movie.

I opened my mouth to protest, to defend myself, to say something, anything that will save me from my job.

Dominique raised her hand and dismissed me like I was a pesky fly.

As I watched her walk away, I felt my dreams and hopes fall and break into a thousand pieces on the polished marble floors.

It has taken me three months to get this job. I was drowning in debt and I had bills to pay. Where was I going to find another job working for a fashion exec?

I went into my little cubicle and packed my things. I didn't have much.

Tanya sent me a pitying look and mouthed sorry as I walked past her out of the beautiful glass walls of Rivera Fashion.

I decided that I couldn't just go home after using my money on the bus to come into the city. I might as well start job hunting.

Although it looked like my dreams to become a fashion icon had been washed down the drain, I had bills to pay and I couldn't pay them while sitting at home and sulking.

Three hours later, after five rejections and a door slammed rudely in my face, I decided to find the nearest bus stop and go home.

After five minutes the bus arrived, I was struggling the get on the bus and that was the last thing I remembered.

…..

"Ma'am, can you hear me?" I heard the voice, it was close. Yet it sounded so far.

I blinked my eyes open. I heard the beep beep of a monitor. I saw a nurse staring at me. I looked down and saw that a drip was connected to my hands.

"Oh good, you're awake." I heard the nurse say.

I tried to sit up.

"Ma'am just calm down, you need to rest." The nurse told me.

"No I need to get home," I sat up trying to pull out the drip. I was thinking of the bills I had to pay.

I couldn't add a whooping hospital bill to the list.

"Ma'am please sit down, you fainted and you shouldn't be rushing out of the hospital in your condition."

"I fainted, it's normal, it happens I was probably just tired. Now I need to get home." I said, swinging my legs to the side of the bed trying to get up, then I stopped.

"What do you mean, my condition?" I asked the nurse warily as her words registered in my brain.

The nurse looked at me with an awkward smile on her face.

"The doctor will let you know, ma'am. For now you just have to rest and wait for him."

"No, I need to know what's happening and then go home." I said stubbornly, still trying to get up.

"Ma'am, please lie down and rest, while you wait for your IV to finish. If you don't calm down, I'll be forced to put you to sleep." The nurse said to me now looking visibly distressed.

I laid back reluctantly, no way was I letting her drug me.

The faster I get out of this place, the better for me.

"Thank you ma'am. The doctor will be with you soon."

She looked at me for a moment, as if trying to make sure I wasn't a flight risk.

When she was certain, I wasn't going to try to run, she left me alone with the beeping machines and my thoughts.

I looked around, I saw my bag on the table beside me, I checked inside and found my phone. I signed with relief then the sigh was followed by a groan when I realized that my phone was dead.

And I hadn't carried my charger this morning because I was in such a hurry.

I decided to lie down and rest, I closed my eyes. Today was not what I'd hoped it would be. How could so many unfortunate things happen to me in one day.

"I fainted!" I thought to myself. " I have never fainted in my entire life. So why today of all days? And what did the nurse mean by my condition? What was wrong with me?"

Turns out I was more tired than I thought, cause I could feel myself slowly drifting to sleep.

…..

I woke up to voices.

"I don't think she knows." I heard the voice of the nurse that was here earlier.

"Know what?" I blurted out.

They both turned to look at me.

"I'll excuse you guys." The nurse said and left.

The Doctor smiled, "Mrs. Amelia." He started.

"Miss," I interrupted. "I'm not married.

He blinked, I assumed he was wondering why I cut him off so rudely.

The thing was marriage wasn't really in my plans and it just seemed off.

"Miss Amelia," he corrected himself. "I'm Dr. Whyte and you're at the Mount Sinai Hospital I hbelieve you were here two weeks ago."

Two weeks ago, Dominique had made us come for a routine check up in the hospital. I groaned inwardly, the hospital was pricey but at least the bill had been paid by her.

"Why did I have to faint in Manhattan of all places?"

"Yes." I replied to the Doctor.

"Do you have someone you can call, a boyfriend or relative?" He asked.

I eyed the Doctor. Why all these unnecessary questions. "I don't have a boyfriend or any relative I can call."

"Oh um okay, " he said, looking a bit surprised.

"Ma'am did you eat this morning?" He asked.

"No." I replied. "I was too busy rushing to work and trying to catch a bus."

"You shouldn't skip breakfast. It is the most important meal of the day." Dr. Whyte said in that professional manner.

"Some of us are too busy trying to keep our jobs to think about breakfast." I retorted.

"You should actually slow down, and try to eat breakfast every morning especially in your condition."

I rolled my eyes, "What is it Doc?" I asked. "Can you just rip off the band aid and tell me what's wrong with me?" I was beginning to get irritated.

"Whoa calm down ma'am, no need to get all riled up. You're pregnant. It's probably the hormones."

"Which hormones?" I began saying.

Then I just realized what he said.

"What do you mean I'm pregnant?" I demanded. "It's not possible, I can't be pregnant, I've not had sex in years."

The ringing in my ears started again. I barely heard the last statement the Doctor made.

"We ran some tests to find out what was wrong with you. And the results came out positive."

"You're two weeks pregnant, Miss!"
