Chapter 3 - Chapter Three: The Mix Up

Amelia's POV

"I'm not pregnant. Run the test again."

"Miss, the rest was done thoroughly. And it clearly states that you're pregnant."

"Then please explain to me Doc how I can be pregnant when I've not had sex in three years?" I asked, raising my voice.

Dr. Whyte cleared his throat. "And you're certain you've not had sex in three years? No one night stands, no sex parties you don't remember? No drunken nights of mistake?"

I stared at the Doctor as if he was mad. Was something wrong with him?

"Do I look like someone who will have sex and forget?" I asked while eyeing him.

"Calm down Miss, if what you're saying is true…"

"It's true." I cut him off.

"We'll run the test again and get to the bottom of it."

"You better." I shot at him, as he walked out the door.

Immediately he left, I sighed.

Something must be wrong with the people in the hospital. What do they mean I mean pregnant.

It wasn't even scientifically possible and I hadn't had sex since with anyone since my last relationship. I hadn't had time to have a love life or even go on a date.

I was too busy dealing with life's problems to think about having one.

I couldn't even take care of myself, how was I supposed to take care of a baby?

…..

After a while I heard voices outside my room door. I was hearing words like IUI and mistake and legal team.

It seemed as if there was a commotion in the hospital and it was all because of me.

My room door opened and Dr. Whyte walked in.

"You might want to sit down to hear this." He said when he saw me standing up.

I sat down reluctantly.

"Miss we conducted the test again and it's affirmative, you're pregnant."

"I told you I'm not pregnant. Your equipment is probably broken. I'm going to another hospital." I said getting up. "You all must be joking."

"Miss, please calm down and hear me out." Dr. Whyte told me in a calm voice that did little to calm my frizzled nerves.

"You are pregnant, but this is all a mistake."

"You're damn right it is." I spat out.

"You were mistakenly inserted with a sperm sample and that is why you're pregnant, Miss"

For the second time that day I was at a loss for words.

"I don't think I understand what you're saying."

"When you were here for your routine check up last week, the Doctor in charge of IUI's, that's intrauterine insemination, mistakenly inserted a sperm sample into your uterus and that was how you got pregnant."

"The chances are usually not very high, but you were probably ovulating at the time hence the quick results."

I took a whole minute to process the information.

"So you mean to tell me I'm pregnant because of a stupid Doctor's mistake?" I said in a high voice.

I didn't know I screamed but I must have, because a nurse ran in asking if everything was okay.

The Doctor assured her that everything was fine, she shot me a puzzled look and left.

"Miss, please just calm down."

"How do you expect me to calm down?" I said angrily.

"Who is responsible for this, how could a Doctor make such a mistake? Is he even licensed? I need to know what was going on, that he mistakenly conducted an UII or whatever you call it on me." I demanded.

"It's an IUI ma'am, and it was all an honest misunderstanding. You were in the wrong room, he told me he remembered a lady coming in that day and he actually asked if the appointment was that day. And the lady said yes.

He was also very tired, so he assumed he mixed up the appointment dates and went ahead with the procedure. Weren't you aware of what was going on Miss?"

Dr. Whyte asked me like it was my fault, as if I was supposed to know what was going on.

"Don't ask me. Your hospital is the one with the problem. I'm not used to being in fancy hospitals and I thought it was all part of the routine check up."

"Believe me I would have jumped from that bed faster than lightning if I had known what was going on."

Dr. Whyte stared at me. It was as if he didn't know what else to say.

I, on the other hand, had a lot to say. I still kept wondering how such a fancy big hospital could have such incompetent staff. How could a certified medical doctor make such a mistake?

My mind was whirling with a lot of questions. My chest felt tight. Today had been a rollercoaster of unfortunate events.

I felt like crying, but I wasn't going to, I couldn't let a doctor's silly mistake get the best of me. I was going to deal with this and move on with my life. No way was I letting this affect me.

"I don't care whether this was a mistake or divine intervention, but tell the doctor who "mistakenly put me in this situation, to come and fix this mess."

"I can't have a baby, I'm getting rid of it."

"Miss, don't you think you should think about it first before making a decision?" Dr. Whyte asked me.

I shook my head vehemently.

"There's nothing to think about. I don't care whose sperm was put inside me. It's my body and I'm getting rid of it!" I exclaimed.

"You will do no such thing." I heard a deep cool commanding voice say.
