Chapter 81 - Chapter 82: The Insurmountable Wall

Supplementary Lessons Club, After-School Study Session

The newly formed club held daily after-school tutoring and self-study. The first half involved Mash explaining test prep problems and subject breakdowns.

"Let's start," Mash said, looking half-dead—dark circles, pale face, exhausted eyes.

"No way!" Hifumi cried.

"What?" Mash asked.

"Sensei, what happened last night!?" Hifumi asked.

"Just trained late," Mash said.

"Training did that!?" Azusa exclaimed.

"Hmph! Can't manage your health? Rest, you're a nuisance like this!" Koharu huffed.

"Thanks for worrying, Koharu-chan," Mash said.

"I'm not worried!" Koharu snapped.

"I'm fine. Don't want a repeat of day one," Mash said.

Day one was a disaster—Mash's teaching debut was a mess, though somewhat understandable.

"Day one was rough," Azusa noted.

"You fainted after glancing at problems," Hanako added.

"Then lamented your failure and studied with us," Hifumi said.

"That happened? (He's worse than me? I win!)" Koharu smirked.

"Don't worry, I've got proper materials today," Mash said.

"Materials?" Hifumi asked.

"Test prep stuff. I'll explain," Mash said.

"You sure you're okay?" Hifumi pressed.

"Fine, fine. Let's begin," Mash said.

Mash wrote on the board, explaining clearly—far better than any Blu-ray tutorial. The material sank in effortlessly.

"So, like that. Questions?" Mash asked.

"Here," Azusa said.

"That's… page 40… here," Mash flipped through thick notes, explaining adeptly. Hifumi was stunned.

(He's good at explaining!? Don't judge by appearances—wait…)

Mash's voice faltered. "Here's… how it… works…"

(He's forcing it! His brain's overloading, but he's pushing through!) Hifumi realized.

"Thanks, Sensei, I get it," Azusa said.

"Good… urp," Mash groaned.

"Mash-kun, don't overdo it," Hanako said.

"It's fine… I've got cream puffs," Mash said, shakily eating one.

"Fully recovered!" he declared.

"Liar!" they shouted.

"Cream puffs restore stamina? Useful," Azusa mused.

"Don't believe it, only Sensei can do that!" Hifumi said.

"Let's continue," Mash said.

"Unbelievable…" Koharu muttered.

They took notes, mindful of Mash's struggle.

Self-Study Time

Mash rested, too drained for questions.*1

"Hanako, how do I solve this?" Azusa asked.

"Here, use the multiple method like this," Hanako explained.

"Got it," Azusa said, glancing at Mash, sprawled on a desk.

"Worried about Mash-kun?" Hanako teased.

"Anyone would be," Azusa said.

Hifumi checked on Koharu. "Need help?"

"N-No!" Koharu stammered.

"That page isn't in the test scope," Hifumi noted.

"What!?" Koharu yelped.

"Hehe," Hanako giggled.

"N-No! I knew that! I'm pre-studying 'cause the scope's easy!" Koharu insisted.

"Haha…" Hifumi smiled wryly.

Koharu studied alone, Hanako and Azusa worked efficiently together, and Hifumi felt reassured.

"Looks good," Mash said, recovering.

"Yes! Hanako-chan's amazing, Azusa-chan's motivated, and Koharu-chan's hiding her skills. We might pass easily!" Hifumi said.

"Hope so," Mash said.

"I was worried… Nagisa-sama said if we fail the first exam, we'll have a training camp," Hifumi confessed.

"News to me," Mash said.

"And if we fail all three exams…" Hifumi trailed off.

"Something bad?" Mash asked.

"N-Nothing! It'll be fine. The exam looks doable!" Hifumi said, hiding something.

Mash didn't press, noticing her forced smile.

"Why did Hanako-chan fail? She seems smart. Missed tests like you?" Hifumi asked.

"Maybe those words got her in trouble?" Mash teased.

"The swimsuit incident… maybe," Hifumi laughed.

"Not true!" Hanako protested.

"I'm on your side, Hanako-chan," Mash said.

"Cool line, but it doesn't land," Koharu muttered.

"Ugh…" Hanako groaned.

(Should've left Hanako with Sensei, not the Justice Task Force,) Koharu thought.

First Special Academic Exam Day

The usual classroom, but the mood was tense.

"Hehe," Hanako smiled.

"Uh, this formula… this term…" Hifumi mumbled.

"Mmm…" Azusa focused.

Koharu crammed desperately, Azusa was stoic, and Hanako grinned as usual.

"Time's up. Put away notes and books," Mash said.

"Sensei, I request cream puff supplies," Azusa said.

"Approved," Mash said.

"Yes!" Azusa cheered.

"Where'd you pull that from?" Hifumi asked.

"My bag?" Azusa said.

(I'll let it slide,) Hifumi thought.

Mash distributed answer sheets. Hifumi and Koharu looked nervous, Azusa and Hanako unfazed.

"No issues with the papers? Alright…" Mash said.

A bell rang across Trinity.

"Exam… begin!" Mash announced.

The club flipped their papers, starting the first exam.

The first exam was basic, covering Mash's lessons and practice problems. Not hard, but not to be underestimated. Hifumi felt confident.

"Results are in," Mash said.

"Good work, everyone!" Hifumi added.

Answers were collected, scanned, and sent to Trinity's graders. Mash opted out of grading, lacking confidence. Ten minutes later, results arrived on his device.

"Hmph!" Azusa puffed up.

"Yes!" Hifumi cheered.

"Hehe," Hanako smiled.

"…" Koharu looked dead.

"Sixty out of a hundred to pass," Hifumi said. "It was easy, so no careless mistakes, right? Sensei, results!"

"Here we go," Mash said, checking his device.

"Whoa," he muttered, then announced:

"Hifumi-chan—79, pass."

"Thanks! Safe score, but I passed! Next?" Hifumi fist-pumped.

"Azusa-chan—38, fail."

"What!?" Hifumi gasped.

"So close!" Azusa said.

"Close!? That's not close! It's half the passing score!" Hifumi yelled.

"Koharu-chan—17, fail."

"What!?" Hifumi shrieked. "Koharu-chan, weren't you hiding your skills? You took the first-year test, right? Or… a third-year test!?"

"N-No! It was hard…" Koharu mumbled.

"It was like a quiz!" Hifumi retorted.

"Oh my," Hanako said.

"Next, Hanako-chan…" Mash said.

"She'll be fine—" Hifumi started.

"Hanako-chan—2."

"Two!?" Hifumi screamed.

"Oh dear," Hanako said.

"Two!? Not twenty!? Even twenty's bad, but… what did you get right!?" Hifumi grabbed Hanako's shoulders, shaking her. "You seemed so smart!"

"I give off that vibe, but grades are another story," Hanako said.

"Vibe!? Just a vibe!?" Hifumi cried.

"Calm down, Hifumi-chan," Mash said.

"I can't…" Hifumi wobbled, collapsing.

"Hifumi-chan!" Mash caught her.

Staring at the scores, Mash muttered, "The wall's high."

1: Mash is too drained from lecturing to answer questions.
