Chapter 1 - Burgers and Brothers

It was a sunny afternoon at Max, the family-friendly fast-food chain everyone in town swore by. The lunch rush was in full swing, the smell of sizzling patties filling the air as the line of customers stretched past the glass doors. Orders were being called, fry baskets hissed in oil, and the hum of chatter blended with the sound of clinking trays and paper bags.

Behind the counter stood two employees who couldn't look less thrilled to be there.

Benny, the older brother, had a grin that rarely meant anything good. His brown hair peeked from under his cap in a messy fringe, and his amber eyes darted around like he was always a step ahead of some joke nobody else got yet. He leaned casually on the counter, the picture of someone who looked like he was up to something even when he wasn't.

Matt, in contrast, looked like he was carrying the weight of the fryer on his shoulders. His dark green hair was slightly mussed from nervously adjusting his cap, and his bright green eyes flickered anxiously to the growing line. He stood stiff, his hand near his chin as if he were calculating every possible disaster that could happen at any moment. While Benny had mischief written all over his face, Matt radiated the kind of nervous energy that made people think he'd apologize even if you bumped into him.

Despite their opposite temperaments, they shared a glance, a silent communication built from years of brotherhood.

"Lunch rush," Benny said under his breath, his smirk widening as he leaned closer to Matt. "Perfect cover."

Matt's brows furrowed. "You sure about this?" His voice was low, cautious.

Benny chuckled, his tone dripping with mock confidence. "Relax. You worry too much. Just stick to the plan."

Matt didn't reply. He glanced at the bustling kitchen, the crowded dining area, then back to his brother. He didn't like the way Benny said "plan." Still, despite the knot forming in his stomach, he gave a tiny nod.

To everyone else, it was just another busy day at Max. But for the two brothers behind the counter, it was the calm before something else entirely.

---

Benny and Matt weren't just any employees at Max—they were the sons of the man who built the chain from the ground up. Their father, Richard "Rich" Maxwell, was a legend in the fast-food world, the kind of man who could turn a simple burger into a nationwide empire. From the moment they could walk, Benny and Matt were told one thing over and over again:

"One day, this will all be yours."

But "one day" came with a condition. Before inheriting the company, their father demanded they start at the very bottom, working the line, taking orders, and "earning" the empire he'd built. On the surface, it sounded like a noble lesson in hard work. In reality, it was just another example of how their father's career came before everything else—including them.

Richard Maxwell was ambitious to a fault, a man who saw family dinners as meetings and birthdays as opportunities to talk about expansion plans. The restaurant chain wasn't just his job; it was his life. And in his tunnel vision for success, he rarely noticed the people right in front of him.

Their mother, Helene, had once been vibrant and outspoken. But years of living under Richard's relentless ambition wore her down. As a housewife with no independent income, she was given allowances instead of partnership, her voice quieted to a polite nod and a soft smile. Sometimes she laughed off Richard's behavior, brushing it away as if it were harmless. But to Benny and Matt, it wasn't harmless.

They saw the way their mother's spark dimmed over the years. They heard her laugh, but they also heard the silence that followed when Richard left for yet another late-night meeting. They felt the weight of his expectations and the sting of never being heard.

Benny, the older of the two, learned to rebel through mischief. If their father wasn't going to listen, then fine—he'd make sure his voice was heard another way. Matt, quieter and more cautious, followed his brother's lead, even when his stomach tied itself in knots.

Working at Max wasn't just a job. It was a cage disguised as opportunity. And every time they put on those red shirts and black hats, they were reminded of their father's empire—and their plan to burn it down from the inside.

Benny's "perfect cover" wasn't as elaborate as Matt feared. It was simple, stupid, and exactly the kind of thing Benny loved. The plan? Replace the standard Max burger sauce with a mix of every single condiment in the kitchen. Ketchup, mustard, mayo, relish, even a splash of the secret marinade for the chicken sandwiches. The idea was to make the food taste so off that customers would complain in droves, tanking the store's lunch rush reputation.

Benny grinned as he slid the horrifying concoction into the prep station squeeze bottle, giving it a victorious shake.

"Gourmet," he whispered dramatically.

Matt looked like he was about to throw up just from watching. "This is… this is bad. This is so bad. You realize if Dad finds out—"

"He won't," Benny cut him off, tossing the bottle into Matt's hands. "We're the bottom of the food chain here. They'll blame the sauce supplier or corporate first. Relax!"

Matt didn't feel relaxed. He felt like he was holding a bomb made of ketchup and regret. But when the first wave of orders came in, there was no turning back. Benny, in his usual showman style, handled the drive-thru window while Matt assembled burgers at record speed, each one slathered with the unholy "Franken-sauce."

The first customer took a bite right at the counter. Matt braced for impact. Benny held his breath.

And then…

"Oh. My. God." The customer's eyes widened. "What is this sauce? This is insane!"

Matt froze. Benny blinked.

Within minutes, word spread through the line. "Try the new sauce!" "Dude, the burger tastes amazing!"

By the time the lunch rush ended, the manager was buzzing with excitement.

"I don't know what you two did, but whatever it is—keep doing it!" she said, clapping them both on the shoulders. "Corporate's been begging us to come up with a limited-time flavor. You might have just saved the store!"

Benny grinned like he meant for this to happen all along. Matt just stared at the empty sauce bottle in his hand, horrified.

As the kitchen erupted into chatter about the "secret recipe," the brothers exchanged a look: the plan had been a disaster. A delicious, greasy disaster that earned them accidental praise—and the terrifying new responsibility of recreating their mistake for tomorrow.
