Natsuki Subaru was breathing heavily in pain.
Subaru: [This is bad. Ugh... it hurts.]
???: [Subaru? What's wrong?]
Natsuki Subaru stood in a convenience store reading a shojo manga.
Subaru: [He's the cute oblivious type as usual. That's the way they write the male lead to make the story longer. It sucks you into the story.]
She flipped the page.
There was a light as Subaru struggled to force a warning out of her throat.
Subaru: [No... It's not safe...]
Subaru put the manga back and walked through the convenience store.
Subaru heard someone groan in pain as he fell to the floor.
Subaru grabbed a cup of noodles before deciding against it and picking up a different cup of noodles and a bag of chips.
Subaru: [No... hold on. Stay... with me.]
She headed to the counter, and the cashier looked a bit stunned when he saw her.
Cashier: (She's pretty, but those eyes are kinda mean looking or... Is she glaring at me?)
The cashier sweated nervously.
Cashier: [I... um... ah... That will be 363 yen.]
Cashier: (Come on. Control yourself. She's a high schooler and she's got a mean look in her eyes, too. No way I'd be able to approach her even if I was still in high school.)
Subaru took out her wallet, collecting the coins when she felt something.
Subaru: [Oh. A grooved-edge 10 yen coin.]
She put the coin back in her wallet before handing 363 yen to him and leaving as the cashier sighed.
Subaru reached out to the man's hand.
Subaru: [I'm...]
Subaru walked outside. A car drove past her.
Subaru [... going to...]
Subaru looked around some more.
Subaru: [... save you...]
She felt something move behind her as she turned to look around.
Subaru: [I guess anyone's eyes would get tired after holing up in their room playing video games all day.]
She rubbed her eyes, but when she opened them, she saw a medieval setting in front of her with Demi-Humans and normal people walking in medieval-style clothes..
Subaru: [Huh?]
She looked around.
Subaru: [What's going on?]
A carriage being pulled by a giant lizard rushed past her.
Subaru: [This stuff obviously isn't fake. Which means...]
She sweated as her eyes lit up.
Subaru: [So does this mean... I've been summoned from across the universe... to another world?!]
Subaru looked around energetically as she walked with a wide grin. In truth, Subaru hadn't read much Isekai manga. Mostly Shojo and some of the more popular Battle Shounen.
Subaru: [This place is like medieval Europe?]
She looked as demihumans walked past her.
Subaru: [Well, even in the few I read, Demihumans were a thing.]
She then stopped.
Subaru: (Wait... I'm a girl. Isn't it usually a guy who gets transported to another world? Am I not the protagonist?)
Her thoughts were cut short when she saw a boy fall over on the street as a carriage was racing towards him. She rushed over, pulling the boy out of the way. He seemed to be scared as he looked at Subaru.
Boy: [Thank you, miss.]
Subaru: [Oh, um... sure.]
The crowd seemed to cheer for her for a second as she felt awkward.
Subaru: (I'm not used to this.)
She tried to slip away quietly when the boy's mother walked over to her, bowing in thanks.
Boy's Mother: [Thank you so much. I'm sorry for the trouble he caused you.]
Subaru flailed her hand in front of her.
Subaru: [It's really fine. I didn't do much.]
The woman smiled, bowing one last time before leaving with her son, wanting to just get him home where he was safe.

Meanwhile, Subaru walked around when she came across a fruit stand with fruits that looked like apples, as the man in the stand threw one to her. She caught it, looking surprised.
Subaru: [Huh?]
Vendor: [I saw you save that kid. Just this once, I'll give you a bag on the house if you want.]
Subaru shook her head.
Subaru: [I just did it on instinct, is all.]
The vendor smiled.
Vendor: [That's even better... hm... those are some strange clothes though. Are you travelling?]
Subaru: [Um... I guess.]
Vendor: [Here.]
The vendor handed her a bag of the fruits as Subaru offered him some money.
Vendor: [I told you it's free... wait... what kinda money is that? That stuff ain't gonna fly in Lugunica.]
Subaru: [Then I'm...]
Vendor: [Broke.]
Subaru sagged with her head down as the Vendor sighed.
Vendor: [Hey kid, just find some work and you'll be fine.]
The vendor paused.
Vendor: [Um... stay away from the west side of the city though.]
Subaru: [Um, why?]
Vendor: [Ehem... not the kind of work I'd recommend for a young lady like you.]
Subaru cringed.
Subaru: [Advice taken.]
Subaru: (Hm... I can't read the signs, but they understand what I'm saying. I guess I'm lucky. I'll just have to gather information.)
Then a thought hit her as she checked for her phone.
Subaru: [Thank god. A phone is a teenage girl's best friend. And it's...]
No service.
Subaru: [... useless.]
Subaru felt crestfallen.
Subaru: (I was just about to catch up to One Piece too... wait... now that I'm here, I'll never find out what it is!)
Subaru felt devastated as she sighed.
Subaru: (Maybe I can ask this guy for some information about this world?)
Subaru: [Hey, sir?]
Vendor: [Yeah? What's up, kid?]
Subaru: [Could you explain some stuff to me about this country? I only got here recently, you see.]
Vendor: [Ya came all the way to Lugunica without knowing anything.]
Subaru sweatdropped, realising how stupid that made her sound.
Subaru: [Yes?]
The Vendor sighed.
Vendor: [Well, you're a good kid, so alright. I'll explain some stuff.]
The vendor explained the currency and the fact that Lugunica wasn't under the rule of a monarch currently.
Subaru: [What happened to the King?]
The Vendor looked a bit sorrowful.
Vendor: [A disease swept through the castle. All of the royal family ended up dying.]
Subaru felt a bit bad for asking.
Subaru: [Damn it. I was insensitive. Sorry about that.]
The vendor raised his hand.
Vendor: [It's fine, kid.]
Subaru then pointed at the fruits.
Subaru: [What are these?]
Vendor: [Those are appas]
Subaru: (Weird.)
Subaru: [Thank you for everything.]
Vendor: [No worries, kid.]
She bowed to him before leaving.
Subaru: (Guess I should explore a little?)
Subaru began walking around when she came across a building. She walked in to see a bunch of male demihumans as she blushed, rushing out and shutting the door behind her.
Subaru: (That was close.)
Meanwhile, the Demihumans inside laughed heartily.
Demihuman 1: [Musta not read the sign properly.]
Demihuman 2: [Or maybe she came in on purpose?]
They sniggered at that.
Demihuman 3: [Yeah, sure. She came in to seduce you.]
They laughed at the absurdity of the theory as Subaru blushed in embarrassment as she walked away quickly.
Subaru: [Okay, that was a restroom, not a restaurant.]
She eventually saw a tavern-like building.
Subaru: [Maybe here?]
She walked in when a lizardman looked at her.
Lizardman: [This place is only for Demi-humans. Ya can't be here.]
A Demihuman entered and walked past her as she walked out.
Subaru: [Not there either.]
Subaru walked into an alleyway as she sat down.
Subaru: [Well, that's two places down.]
She looked at her bags. One had cup noodles and a bag of chips, and the other had appas.
Subaru: [Not a great start... If I don't find a way to earn some money soon, I'll probably starve to death.]
Subaru sweatdropped when she heard some footsteps and saw three thugs walking towards her.
Subaru: [Oh no... This is not good.]
She walked back a little.
Small Thug: [Don't even think about it.]
Thin Thug: [Yeah. Stay right there.]
Beads of sweat rolled down her forehead.
Fat Thug: [Just give us your stuff and we'll leave ya alone.]
Subaru: (That old man gave these appas to me for free. Me, of all people. I can't let them steal it. But there's no way I'll be able to outrun them, especially not while carrying these bags.)
Subaru felt scared as she held her bags closer to herself and she backed off when she heard more footsteps.
Subaru: [A guard?]
A small girl with blond hair rushed through.
Blond Girl: [Move it! Move it!]
She rushed past them as Subaru made a disappointed expression.
Blond Girl: [Live Strong, alright?]
Subaru: (How the hell is that phrase supposed to help me right now?!!)
She jumped up, jumping off the ground and walls and away.
Subaru: (Well then, I've got no choice but to use that.)
As the Small Thug walked closer to him, he took out a cylinder container and pressed the top of it as it sprayed something in the man's eyes, and he fell back onto his ass, screaming in agony and rolling on the floor.
Fat Thug: [The hell is that?]
Subaru: [It's a gift from the most overprotective father in the universe. Mace!]
Subaru then pointed the Mace at the Fat Thug who rushed in. He tried to cover his eyes with one arm as the Mace didn't stop him, but Subaru then proceeded to kick him in the balls.
Subaru: [Don't underestimate me!]
She got ready to fight the skinny man when he reached behind him and pulled out two knives as Subaru's eyes filled with fear.
???: [That's enough!]
Subaru looked behind the skinny man to see a man. He had Amethyst eyes, short silver hair, pointed ears, and he was wearing a uniform as Subaru blushed from the sight of him.
Subaru: (He's seriously too cute!)
The thugs saw the man.
Fat Thug: [Shit, it's a knight.]
Small Thug: [Let's get outta here.]
The three looked tense as the man looked at the thugs more seriously.
Man: [Return what you stole from me.]
Thugs: [Huh? We didn't steal anything from a knight like you. We're not stupid.]
He looked surprised.
Man: [I see.]
He sighed as the thugs tried to leave, but the man raised his hands in the air, forming blocks of ice as they hit the three thugs, knocking them out.
Subaru: (Magic!? So cool!)
Man: [You three are going to a guard station.]
Subaru looked to the man.
Man: [Are you alright?]
Subaru: [Yes. I am. Thanks so much for saving me.]
Man: [I'm a knight. It's my duty. But in exchange for me saving you, tell me something.]
Subaru: [What is it?]
Man: [You know who stole my Insignia, right?]
He stepped closer as Subaru blushed.
Subaru: [Uh...um... no. Sorry.]
Subaru: (Too close. He's completely oblivious. Like the male lead in a Shojo Manga.)
Man: [It has a jewel in the centre, and it's about this big.]
He tried to show Subaru its size by forming and circle with his thumb and pointing finger
Subaru: [Sorry... but I... really haven't seen it.]
Man: [I see. No helping that, then. Now, since you've given me information, you've repaid your debt to me, okay?]
Subaru blushed some more as a white cat floated out of the man's crystal and floated between them.
Cat: [Now now. I taught you better than that. You shouldn't get so close to a girl like that.]
Subaru stumbled back in shock from the cat coming out from nowhere as the man realised and practically jumped back.
Man: [I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.]
He was panicking when Subaru raised her hand.
Subaru: [It's fine.]
He looked up at her in relief.
Man: [I'll try to make it up to you at some other time, but right now I need to find the insignia I lost.]
Subaru: [Alright.]
Man: [Also, I'm a knight, so I'll protect civilians when I see them in danger, but I can't be everywhere at once, so don't go doing dangerous things like wandering into deserted alleys alone again.]
Subaru sweatdropped.
Subaru: (He's right. What was I thinking?)
He began walking away.
Cat: [Sorry about him. He's a bit clueless at times. Don't think badly of him, okay?]
Subaru: [Clueless? I think this goes beyond that. He was looking for something important that was stolen from him, yet he stopped to help me. Even if he's a knight, it's a bit much to do for a stranger. He tried to come up with a lame excuse so that I wouldn't have to feel indebted to even though I'm a total stranger. Anyone who lives like that...]
Subaru grabbed her bags and ran towards the man.
Subaru: [... is just going to end up wasting their whole life!]
She turned a corner to see him and rushed to his side.
Subaru: [Hey! Wait up!]
The man turned.
Man: [I'm really sorry about before, but I really can't make it up to you right now, so...]
Subaru: [No. It's okay. I know you weren't doing that on purpose. I actually want to help you find what you lost. So let me help you.]
Man: [But you said you don't know anything...]
Subaru: [But I remember her face, at least! If I see her again, I'll know!]
The man contemplated.
Man: [You're very strange...]
Subaru felt a metamorphorical arrow go through her heart.
Subaru: (Oh, there's that feeling again. It's been a while, old friend.)
She thought this self-deprecatively when the cat from before floated towards them. The cat makes a knowing look to the man with a smirk, who innocently tilts his head in confusion at the gesture. The cat sighs at this.
Cat: [I think it's fine. After all, if she's able to help, then that's good.]
Man: [Well, alright.]
They began looking around together.

They stopped at a bunch of stairs when the cat raised his hands in realisation.
Cat: [Wait. We haven't even asked your name yet. Should we introduce ourselves?]
Subaru: [You're right. I'll introduce myself first.]
Subaru smiles and stands up with her hand pointing up in the air.
Subaru: [My name is Natsuki Subaru. Not only am I clueless, but I'm also broke beyond compare! Nice to meet you!]
The man and the cat stood there staring at her in confusion. Subaru's face then flushed red.
Subaru: (He's staring...)
They snapped out of it.
Cat: [Looks like you saved a helpless damsel in distress. Well, you definitely got your heroic side from me.]
The man looked at the cat.
Man: [Hey, come on. Don't tease me like that!]
The cat then quickly floated in a circle.
Cat: [I'm Puck! Nice to meet you!]
Puck floated towards Subaru, who extended her hand as Puck landed on her hand.
Subaru: [Whoa, so soft.]
She began petting Puck.
Subaru: (So cute, too.)
Man: [It's very unusual to see someone who can touch a spirit so casually. Where are you from?]
Subaru: [Um... you might not believe me but... I'm from another world.]
Puck: [Oh, whoa. She's not lying. She's really telling the truth.]
Man: [Wow, really? So you're from beyond the『Great Waterfall』?]
Subaru: [Is that what it's called when someone comes from another world? Then have there been other people?]
Puck: [Most people who say they're from beyond the『Great Waterfall』are liars or con-artists.]
Subaru swetdropped.
Subaru: (I shouldn't mention it to people then. Not everyone will believe me.)
Man: [Subaru was it?]
Subaru: [Eh?]
Subaru blushed.
Subaru: (He... he's already using my first name?)
Subaru: [Um, yes. That's my name.)
The man seemed very excited, asking questions, but Subaru stopped him.
Subaru: [First off, let's finish up introductions. What's your name?]
Man: [My name? It's... Sagan.] AN: If you guys can think up something better as a male alternate name for Satella, I'll consider changing the name.
