Chapter 6 - Getting To Work And Next Upgrade

"Alright, now that I've rested, it's time to get to work," Gray said while getting out of bed. "Time to start looking for useful supplies, nails, hammers, any tool really, and after that, look for any canned food or snack that hasn't gone bad, maybe that way I can save some gold."

Looking over at the HUD, he noticed his gold reached 109; the next upgrade was 400 gold away, which was roughly 12 hours away. Damn, I'm getting better at math. Gray muttered while going down the stairs, trying not to make a sound just in case a zombie was nearby.

"So, I have 12 hours to try and make this house a little bit safer, but looking at all those windows, it will take some gold and time from my part. Maybe I can use some plywood to barricade every single window."Gray said while looking around the house some more. "The problem would be the doors, seriously, who installs doors with windows on them? There was probably no crime around this neighborhood, but oh well, back to it."

Gray kept looking around for supplies, hoping maybe even praying that the owners of this house weren't like him, maybe they did have tools and grown-ups' stuff. Finally, after looking in some of the storage closet's he found a toolbox. Inside, it had some wrenches, a nailing hammer, and two screwdrivers, a flathead and a cross one, and finally some wire cutters.

"Damn, at least this is going to save me a few gold, now let's see if I can find some nails." After looking through every single storage closet on the ground floor, he moved onto the kitchen cabinets, scavenging for any kind of food. Surprisingly, he did find a few canned goods. "This should last me for at least a day or two," he said while walking upstairs with his haul.

Once he was sitting on the bed, he opened the HUD once again to see how much it would cost to barricade every window, at least the ones on the ground floor.

"So, there are 8 windows that I need to barricade, not including the doors. Hopefully, the shop has custom cuts for those plywood sheets; otherwise, I will have to cut them, and I have no power tools. Okay, let's not get ahead of ourselves. First things first, let's look at the shop and then we'll make a decision."

{Plywood Sheet (4x8 Ft)} (30 Gold)

{Plywood Sheet (4x4 Ft)} (15 Gold)

{Box Of Nails (500ct)} (8 Gold)

{2x4 Wood Beam (8ft)} (20 Gold)

{2x4 Wood Beam (4Ft)} (10 Gold)

"Alrighty then, I will need 8 of those 4x4 plywood sheets, 16 of those 2x4 wood beams, the 4-foot ones, since the windows aren't that tall, and that box of nails. I already have the hammer, and luckily, the windows do have that thing at the bottom where they stand out a bit, so it will be easier to set them up." Gray quickly went to find a notebook and a pen to start making notes on how much he would spend instead of just making mental calculations.

"Man, I wouldn't have to go through all this if I were in Mexico, they have metal bars on their windows and metal doors, I guess it would have been harder to break into one of their homes too, oh well," he kept making his calculations on the notebook while sighing.

120 gold for the plywood, 8 for the nails, 160 for the wooden beams, so all in all would be around 300 gold to barricade the windows. I think it's doable if I'm to stay here for a while.

"It's decided then, windows are getting barricaded after the upgrade." After a while, he started using that same notebook to make even more calculations on his hourly income from the system, so after the upgrade, I will be making 63 gold an hour, which means waiting another 5 hours to get everything for the barricades...sigh.

"I was thinking that maybe getting a weapon before barricading the windows would give me a better sense of security." Gray started thinking more carefully about it. "Even something better than the bamboo spear I already have, it doesn't have to be a firearm..." He glanced at his HUD and decided he was going to get the Fire Axe after the upgrade.

After securing both chairs to the front and back door, he once again decided to stay on the second floor, with less chance of a passing zombie looking at him. With nothing else to do, he decided to take a power nap, maybe pass the time without overthinking every single thing.

A few hours later, he woke up to the sound of someone or something banging on the door. Carefully, he looked at his HUD to check on his earned gold, a whopping 241. "That means I slept for...4 hours?" Gray muttered, pulling his bamboo spear out of the inventory just in case.

While being careful not to make a sound, he removed the chair from the door and stepped out of the room. Going down the stairs, he heard the sound coming from the front door, which kept sounding like it was someone pounding on it instead of the knock normal people would use. Being extra careful not to make a sound, he got closer and looked through the peephole on the door.

Looking outside made Gray's face drain color as he saw another zombie just banging his head onto the door. Carefully, he stepped back and made his way back to the second floor. Once inside the room with all the food supplies and tools, he made sure to close the door once again before placing the chair against the doorknob, before finally sitting down on the floor.

Just let it pass, maybe it wandered from somewhere else, it didn't see me, so hopefully they're not attracted to smell too...please just leave.

After a few more minutes of that horrendous sound from the door, it suddenly stopped, and Gray let out a sigh of relief. He finally let go of the bamboo spear that he had been holding so tightly. After a few more minutes, he peeked outside the window and noticed a few of those zombies walking around aimlessly on the street. Yeah, good thing I placed those chairs, wouldn't want them wandering inside the house...just have to wait at least one more day before I can secure this house a bit more, hopefully they have left by then.

Without attempting to peek out the window anymore, he lay down on the bed. "Horrible way to wake up from a nap," he muttered while glancing at the roof. "Depending on what happens in the next few hours, my plans might have to change..." Gray said while thinking of the multiple zombies outside.

Thankfully, luck was on his side as in the next couple of hours, he stole a few glances out the window and noticed the eerily quiet street, so far no zombie on sight, but still he didn't let his guard down and kept quiet.

After around 15 more minutes, he decided he was gonna go downstairs to check if he could spot any from the ground floor, once again with his bamboo spear in hand, he went down without a single noise being made, and after carefully looking through multiple windows he let out a sigh of relief, "Phew seriously these scares are gonna be the death of me" Gray muttered while putting his spear in his inventory, glancing over at the HUD and seeing that the upgrade was getting closer and closer he smiled at it.

Looking out into the sky, Gray noticed the sun was starting to dip on the horizon, "Maybe by this time tomorrow, I will have this house barricaded and maybe find the courage to explore a bit around the house." With that out of the way, he secured the chairs, making sure they didn't come loose from the door banging. After securing both chairs, he made his way upstairs to his temporary haven. So if I go by my hourly gold, I can kind of tell the time, so give or take, it should be around 5-6 pm and looking at my gold so far I can get that upgrade in 5 hours, after that I can probably go to sleep and wake up with enough gold to buy the materials I'll need, maybe even a multiplier.

Without anything else to do at the moment, Gray took out his bamboo spear and started walking towards the bathroom, "Time to give you a cleaning since I keep forgetting it's full of blood at the tip." Grabbing it and rinsing it over and over by the sink until it was barely noticeable, he put it back in his inventory.

Looking out the window, he let out a sigh and walked towards the canned goods he found earlier today, "I ate a steak earlier today and now I'm eating canned food haha, you can't make this up." Carefully opening one of the cans so as not to spill anything, he started eating some canned baked beans. "This is bad, but it's better than going hungry." He muttered while looking at his growing gold, itching closer and closer to the upgrade.

After finally being done eating, he looked at his drying clothes inside the bathroom. After taking them off the curtain rack, he put them on the side of the bed and looked outside the window one last time before lying down

And finally, after a few hours had passed with nothing but Gray and his overthinking brain, the gold he needed for the upgrade was achieved.
