in a world of people who can use magic, the worst thing to overcome is being the only one unable to use any, but what if something or someone could help you?
in a world where everyone knew how to use magic, there was always one boy who got bullied by everyone at school, treated as less worthy by society and even yelled at by his parents. for what reason? he can't produce magic, which is considered irregular in his hometown. his name was Sam Hart. he woke up one morning not knowing his life was about to change drastically that day
Sam: "ugh.. good morning Sam… time to survive another day…"
he got out of bed and walked over to his practice target and tried casting a fire spell
Sam: "i call from the depths of my soul.. the magic i may have… may i be allowed to cast: Flare!"
nothing happened, and that means absolutely nothing, not even the magical circle that's supposed to appear at the hand he held out, still he's just normal
Sam: "sigh another failure…"
Sam wrote another turf line on his wall with a piece of chalk, which stands for another day he couldn't cast magic. his wall was almost full of them.
Sam: "i wish i could afford magic infusion, but that's way too expensive"
he said before leaving his room, going downstairs to the living room to eat breakfast, being greeted by a pie in the face from his little brother
Sam: "hey! mooooom!! my brother threw a pie at my face and i just woke up!!"
his mom answered with the following
Sam's mom: "just wash it off! i'm not gonna help a magicless son!"
Sam went to the kitchen to wash it off, his little brother giggling at the doorstep
Sam: "you're lucky i can't cast magic, you would've been in a lot of trouble otherwise…"
Sam's little brother stuck out his tongue and ran away from him, Sam taking his breakfast to the living room. after finishing his morning routine he gets his bag and goes to school. along the way he runs into his bullies from school, who were waiting for him like always
Bully 1: "heh~ hey magicless! come out of your cave once again? alright you know the drill, give us your lunch money and we'll be on our merry way~
Sam: "guys, can you cut it out for once? this has got to stop…"
Bully 2: "oh yeah? what'cha gonna do about it huh? it's not like you can use magic~"
Sam: "if you want my lunch money you can come take it from me today!"
Sam pushed the two bullies aside and tried to escape
Bully 1: "big mistake buddy~ come on, let's get him!"
the bullies started chasing Sam, lucky for him the one thing he's good at is running away really fast, but the bullies use teleportation to keep up
Bully 1: "hey sam! you know this is only gonna delay your downfall right?"
Bully 2: "you could've made this a lot easier by just giving us your money!"
Sam sees an alleyway and decides to hide behind one of the containers he sees in there, successfully shaking the bullies off
Bully 1: "he went in here! come back here magicless! you can't run forever!"
Sam, out of breath, sat down and looked around him to see if the coast was clear, then when he was about to leave the alleyway, he heard a mysterious voice say something. it came from one of the dumpsters
???: "ugh.. i only have… what, 5 weeks left…? if i don't find someone compatible soon, i'm a goner…"
Sam opened the dumpster to see a black Seishin inside. it was very weak and could barely move. a Seishin is a ghost-like creature that usually multiplies its master's magic, and this one was part of an endangered race due to it being hunted for its incredible energy which is used for potions.
Sam: "a Seishin? hey wait, isn't this race like.. super rare?"
Sam thought for a moment, then asked
Sam: "hey, what's your name?"
???: "don't bother… you're just gonna sell me on one of those black market thingies aren't you?"
Sam: "w- what? no! i'm not heartless! despite the fact that i really need money, because… well.. i'm magicless…"
before the dark Seishin could respond, he sensed bounty hunters in the distance
???: "oh no.. they're coming for me… quick! there's not much time! let me enter your body, i promise i won't hurt or bother you! please!"
Sam: "first tell me your name!"
the Seishin hesitated for a moment, then finally gave in
???: "it's Zetra Rophyn. there, i said it, now please accept me!"
Sam agreed to reach out and take Zetra and absorb him. for a moment, Sam's body was in pain trying to reject the Seishin due to his lack of magic, but eventually it merged with his soul successfully
Sam: "okay! i did it!"
right then and there the bounty hunters entered the alleyway
Bounty hunter 1: "it went in here last i saw"
Bounty hunter 2: "i don't see it anywhere…"
Bounty hunter 3: "oh, there's a boy in here! maybe he knows!"
one of the bounty hunters walked up to Sam and asked
Bounty hunter 3: "hey kid, did you happen to see any creature escape or enter this alleyway? we're looking for it. it was a dark Seishin"
Bounty hunter 1: "if you tell us where it is, we'll share the pay with you"
Bounty hunter 2: "i remember seeing this kid somewhere i think… he has no magic.
one bounty hunter had an idea and said to Sam the following
Bounty hunter 1: "kid, imagine what you could do with such money… you could pay for a magic infusion and stop being magicless! wouldn't that be amazing?!"
Sam thought for a moment, but then said the following
Sam: "sorry.. if i knew where he was i would tell you, but i didn't see anything unfortunately…"
the bounty hunters looked at each other, nodded and ran out of the alleyway, then one said
Bounty hunter 2: "shame, kid… if you knew it you could've been rich…"
after that they were finally gone
Sam: "okay Zetra, you're safe now"
Zetra was connected to Sam's brain and talked directly to it so only he could hear him
Zetra: "good… thank you for absorbing me, i was gonna die there without a host!"
Sam felt good about the fact that he saved a dark Seishin, but then looked at his watch and realized something…
Sam: "oh shit! i'm late for school!"
Sam ran to school as fast as he could to be roughly in time. when he arrived, the classroom was empty except for his girlfriend Elisa, who was waiting for Sam
Elisa: "sam, you were late today… we got M.E. (Magical Education) on the program right now, come on let's hurry!"
Zetra called Sam out
Zetra: "so that's your name… Sam.."
Sam: "oh sorry, forgot to tell you, haha!"
Elisa took Sam's hand and they ran their way to M.E. as fast as they could. when they arrived, the lesson already started, the teacher was explaining to the class
M.E. teacher: "okay class! today we're doing target practice! over there is a target that you need to aim a Flare at. remember that if this is your first time casting magic, you need to use an awakening spell first! succeeding the flare will allow you to pass this class. and failure will kick you from the school! remember: a magic school is for magic users! without magic you don't belong here!"
he looked at Sam while saying the last part, already knowing his magicless problem. first up was Sam's girlfriend Elisa. she chanted the spell and casted a Flare at the dummy, up next was one of sam's bullies, who casted a large Flare. only one person has ever bested him before at Flares.
M.E. teacher: "up next: Sam Hart!"
Bully: "ha! looks like someone is gonna get kicked from the school!"
Elisa: "leave him alone! it's not his fault he was born without magic!"
Sam felt his breath getting funny, thinking about the fact that he'll likely never see his girlfriend again after this day since he doesn't have magic yet, or well… that's what he thought.. because when Sam held out his hand, a dark aura surrounded his body as he chanted the spell
Sam: "i call from the depths of my soul…"
the whole class was staring at Sam with a shocked expression when they sensed the amount of Mana he was giving off
Sam: "the magic i may have…"
his hand showed a summoning circle, it was glowing like nobody else's ever has
Elisa: "can he.. no way…"
Sam: "may i be allowed to cast…"
Bully: "bullshit! this is bull-!"
Sam: "Flare."
Sam then successfully casted a flare so big, it annihilated the entire target, in flames, surprising everyone including himself
Bully: "this is outrageous! he should be kicked from this school for fraud!"
M.E. teacher: "you're wrong kid, his attack was rendered by the anti-cheat sensors i installed in this hall. my computer reads a 100% natural magic"
Bully: "t- that's a thing?!"
Elisa was still surprised, but happy that Sam gets to stay at the school
Sam: "u- uhhh… i think i need to go to the bathroom…"
he gestured with his head to Elisa to follow him. when they were in the hallway, Elisa had questions
Elisa: "you have magic? since when?! how?!"
Sam: "i- i don't know! i thought a magicless person couldn't develop magic!"
Elisa: "that's the thing, that should be impossible!"
Zetra answered Sam through his mind again
Zetra: "it was me."
Sam: "what?!"
Zetra: "because of the fusion, my life force was stitched onto your soul, infusing you with the ability to use magic"
Sam: "i didn't even know that was a thing! i thought Seishins only multiplied magic!"
Elisa: "Sam?"
Elisa was confused, Sam looking at her as she drew his attention to her
Elisa: "who are you talking to? there's nobody here…"
Sam looked around, sighed, then softly said to Elisa
Sam: "listen, i don't know how it works, but i found myself a black Seishin. he was abandoned and he was being chased by bounty hunters
Elisa: "a dark Seishin? aren't those supposed to be extremely rare to find?"
Sam: "exactly! that's what i thought too! but somehow it was just inside of a dumpster and it asked me to absorb it…"
Elisa: "i used to have a red Seishin, but someone beat me in a fight and took it from me… sucks i don't remember his name…"
Zetra: "say, what was the name of that Seishin?"
Sam: "oh, he wants to know what your Seishin was called"
Elisa: "its name was: Magza Rophyn. but i called it Maggie in case anyone recognized her name"
Zetra: "damn it! that Seishin is my long lost girlfriend! Sam, we need to find out who has it!"
Sam: "he says that Seishin was his sister, do you know who has it now?"
Elisa: "alright, then… let me tell you everything you need to know…"
