Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: First mission

The next morning.

At the south gate of Magnolia.

Two figures, one large and one small, stood together.

It attracted the curious gazes of the passing crowd.

The large one was fine, looking like just a handsome young man.

Although he could attract the attention of some older sisters, it was not enough to cause such a spectacle.

The small one had horns and a tail, and with her strange clothes and cute appearance.

It was hard not to attract attention.

But after all, it was in Magnolia, which had a strong magical atmosphere.

So it was not enough to make people feel scared.

At this time, the little girl seemed to be not yet awake, her small figure swaying from time to time and bumping into the young man beside her.

The passersby who were watching this scene showed a knowing smile.

"Kanna, why don't you go back to sleep first?"

Rayn looked down at the drowsy Kanna and proposed his idea.

The so-called going back was not back to the apartment, but to Kanna's original world.

That way, if anything happened, he could summon her at any time.

Although it was only a C-rank mission, nothing should happen.

"No."

A dreamlike soft voice sounded, and the small figure still swayed, but her hand held Rayn's clothes tightly.

Going back to sleep was not as interesting as being in this world.

"Alright then."

Seeing this, Rayn didn't insist and turned to scan the bustling entrance and exit.

Not long after, an old man entered Rayn's sight.

His hair was all white, and his figure was a bit stooped, but he looked quite energetic. He carried a bamboo basket on his back.

Rayn had seen a similar basket at Porlyusica's place. It was something she used to collect medicinal herbs.

"This should be Bartello, right?"

Rayn thought to himself.

His unconcealed gaze also seemed to attract the old man's attention.

His slightly cloudy eyes looked at Rayn.

Then they landed on the hand holding the request form, with the mark of Fairy Tail engraved on it.

"Are you the ones who accepted my request? We're not going out to play this time."

Bartello walked up and saw the sleepy Kanna, and he hesitated a little.

He didn't doubt Rayn much.

But this child, who was not even as old as his granddaughter, would it really not be dangerous if she went out with them?

"Mr. Bartello, please rest assured. I won't joke with our lives."

Rayn understood Bartello's doubts, so he explained with a faint smile.

"The master also agreed for Kanna to come."

Then Rayn brought up Makarov.

The people of Magnolia knew that the Fairy Tail guild was very… noisy and jumpy.

But they also knew how much Makarov valued his guild members.

So if he agreed, then although it was a bit strange, it seemed not unacceptable.

"Is that so… then I'll be troubling you."

Seeing the young man's serious look, Bartello didn't say any more.

As Rayn had said, they wouldn't joke with their own lives.

"Thank you for accepting."

Bartello's quick agreement made Rayn smile.

The request was confirmed, and the next thing was to set off.

But Bartello was an old man, and it would be a bit tiring for him to walk back and forth.

So Bartello, Rayn, and Kanna took a carriage to a southern town.

This was a type of vehicle that ordinary people often took when traveling between towns.

A carriage would not only carry one person, but would constantly pick up and drop off passengers.

When Rayn first heard of it, he couldn't help but complain that it was similar to a bus.

And besides the carriage, there was actually a kind of magical vehicle.

It used magic as power, was faster and more stable than a carriage, but also consumed more.

If a carriage consumed only some grass and food for ten kilometers.

Then a magical vehicle would consume several wizards.

So unless it was an emergency, most people still took a carriage.

Of course, there was another reason, which was that the magical vehicle was more expensive!

After all, it consumed more.

And although the carriage was cheap, there were a few problems.

It was steep, and it was slow…

There were no flat roads in the wild in this world. When passing through some places, the whole thing would bounce a few times.

"Fortunately, I'm not a Dragon Slayer, otherwise I'd be in a bad state."

This was a thought that couldn't help but pop up in his mind after taking the carriage.

It was already uncomfortable just like this. If he added motion sickness, Rayn didn't know how uncomfortable it would be.

As for Kanna, after the initial surprise.

She seemed to have found something fun and knelt directly on the small railing at the entrance of the carriage.

Feeling the automatically retreating view, her sky-blue eyes flickered with a sense of novelty.

"Rayn, Rayn, what's that!?"

Seemingly seeing something, a childish voice called out to Rayn.

Rayn didn't refuse and stuck his head out to take a look.

It was a deer-like creature that was all snow-white, with a pair of crystal-clear long horns on its head.

It stood in the grass and watched the creaking carriage drive by.

Faced with the two gazes cast over, its head tilted slightly, and then it turned and ran into the forest.

"It's gone…"

Kanna's voice was filled with a bit of regret.

"Hehe, little girl, you're lucky. That's a Crystal Horn Deer, a very gentle magical creature."

"Because they are rare, it is said that seeing them will bring good luck."

Bartello had obviously seen it through the carriage window just now and explained with a kind smile.

"Hehe…"

Faced with Bartello's explanation, Rayn could only smile wordlessly.

He knew that Kanna's regret was not because she saw a cute creature leave like an ordinary little girl.

It was because the deer ran away and she couldn't eat it.

The chance encounter added a bit of fun to the slow journey.

Kanna also quickly put the regret behind her.

Her little chubby legs, kneeling on the ground, tapped lightly on the wooden board below. Her elbows rested on the wooden railing, her hands propped up her chin, and her eyes blinked as she looked at the sky.

A few birds, with a flap of their wings, surpassed the slowly advancing carriage below.

The other passengers in the carriage seemed to be infected by this atmosphere and showed gentle smiles.

Although the carriage was slow, it would eventually arrive.

An hour later, at a fork in the road.

Under Bartello's leadership, Rayn and Kanna also got off the carriage.

"Rayn, someone is following us."

Kanna pulled Rayn's sleeve, her head tilted up as she said flatly.

It was as if she was talking about the weather.

There was no feeling of being followed at all.

"Hmm?"

This made Rayn stunned for a moment.

In his mind, he even subconsciously thought that it might be a member of the Black Magic Cult.

After all, the only ones he had had a conflict with were those guys.

But soon, Rayn denied this idea.

Those people just wanted slaves. How could they spend time looking for him.
