Chapter 10 - CHAPTER 10: DO YOU REMEMBER?

Sarah laid down on her bed while starring at the ceiling in deep contempt: she was thinking about where her sister could be and the death of her step-father. It has been two days since the incident at the happy place Forest Park. What had happened to the killers was said to be an act of self–defence but others think otherwise.

It was said that some of the victims have been missing for years while others never even should up on records. The three which Sarah took interest in was the injured girl who was said to be Louis Carmelo, the boy whose face was bashed in, David Mubiana and the girl who was looked in the locker, Penelope Hunter; a name which gave Sarah some disturbing flashbacks–

"Hey, are you going to help me or what?" Said a voice.

Sarah sat up from her bed. Her bedroom was nearly empty; the only thing left was her mattress and some boxes which were sealed shut. Through all that was a boy who was staggering as he went about lifting three boxes. The boy was dark skinned, had short hair and had green eyes. He wore a checked shirt with a white under shirt, blue jeans and white sneakers.

"If you're just going to look at me all day," said the boy as he staggered about, "I'll would really like it if you could stop and help."

"Coming Kelvin."

Sarah got off her bed and began to help Kelvin take out the boxes to the front yard. Sarah's Grandmother Mwape sat in the driver's seat of her car. The two loaded the stuff in the trunk, got inside and drove off.

As they drove through the quite streets of Ingola. Kelvin asked Sarah,

"Did you hear the news about that Louise girl dying?"

"Wait she died?" Said Sarah.

"Yeah, her body was found in the floor. A nurse found her laying there during the night shift."

"When did this happen?"

"Yesterday."

"Could you two please stop if you," said Mwape with a weary voice," if it's one thing I hate it's what you are talking about. You two can talk about it when we reach home. You're even lucky Sarah because your friend kelvin is staying with us for the night."

As they drove around town they reached a nearby gas station called,' LOC n LOW'. Sarah and Kelvin went into the gas station to buy some snacks as Mwape waited for the car to be refuelled.

Sarah stood at the snack ail trying to figure out what snack to get. Turning her head to Kelvin, who was at the cash register, she asked–

"Hey Kelvin which should I get? Should I get CHUCKLE'S potato chips or REAVEN fire chips."?

"Do what makes you happy." Kelvin answered while waiting for the cahier to come. "Hey do you think I should call for the cashier again."

"Do what makes you happy." Said Sarah in a mocking voice.

" Real mature Sarah... So where exactly are we going again?"

"To the end of the rainbow."

"Quite the sarcasm."

"It's not my fault that you're so damn forgetful."

"Whatever alright," Kelvin said while starring at the staff room," isn't it that place with the rivers?"

" It's called River city."

" Pssh... The place has not even one river."

" It has. It's called river Lava."

" Why is it called that?"

" Some cultural bullshit I don't know."

As they were talking the cashier came out of the staff room. She was dark skinned and was small in stature, she had long braided hair and a small scar on her right check; she wore a black short sleeved shirt, shorts, a white apron and cap that covered half her face.

"Yes how can I help?" The girl asked

Kevin then handed over a shopping basket loaded with drinks and snacks, Sarah then walked up to the counter holding a pack of REAVEN fire chips. She placed the pack on the counter and took a quick glance at the girl.

There was something about the girl which made her look familiar towards Sarah. She then waited for the young girl to scan all the items and Kelvin paid for it all.

The two left the place, got into the car and from there drove off. The young girl watched from the glass door as they went by, she pulled out her phone, texted to number saved as M, "The devil's daughter is coming." And went back into the staff room.

It was only a five hour journey from Ingola to River city but in Sarah's mind, it felt like forever. She eventually fell asleep and dreamt of a bright campfire; kids played around it while other kids stayed far from it. A young girl stood in the midst; she had no face, long dark hair and wore a white shirt and trousers but no shoes.

She then suddenly covered her face with her arms and slowly lowered her hands reviling a face like Sarah's but it wasn't Sarah. Her face was pale, her eyes were white and her grin was devilish.

Sarah immediately woke up and saw that they had reached Mwape's house. Kelvin told Sarah to come and help remove the luggage from the back. They did saw and when all was done it was evening. The three sat down at the dining table and began to eat dinner; the house was one story tall with three bedroom: one was Miti, the master bedroom being for Mwape and her late husband and the last room was for Miti's elder brother Prince.

When they were done with their meal Sarah and Kelvin went to bed. Sarah was in Miti's room and was looking out the window; she was gazing at the night sky. She eventually felt bored and decided to go outside.

The backyard was surrounded with a tall white wooden fence and there were trees at the back. As Sarah sat alone Kelvin came and sat beside Sarah with his arms behind his back and asked,

"What seems to be bothering you?"

"A lot," she answered in low voice, " I wish none of this ever happened; I wish I–"

" Wish you did something. Sarah, one thing I've known about you is that despite how smart you are you are a total idiot."

" Elaborate." Sarah snapped.

" It's the fact you don't make sense with what you say. You want to wish something never happened, well let me burst your bubble but you can't."

" Well that's obvious."

"Of course it is. What has happened has happened we can only wish for the best," handing her small bottle of booze he said, "don't stress yourself it will only make things worse." He then told her good night and went inside.

Sarah then took a sip from the booze and as she was still thinking about where Samantha could be she suddenly saw her standing at the midst of the yard. Sarah couldn't believe what she was seeing; Samantha was standing right in front of her. She was just the same as before: her long blonde hair, her warm smile her bright yellow eyes.

Sarah help herself but rush to give a hug. She hugged her tight and when taking one more look at she asked,

"Where have you been what happened?"

Sarah's heart felt like it could skip a beat. The girl she was hugging was Samantha but she looked younger, she wore a white shirt, white trousers sneakers. Soon fire began to rise from the ground, Sarah then found herself in a hall of a burning building and at the end of the hall was a girl who looked just like Sarah but seven years younger, her eyes were as white as snow, her smile was devilish and she wore a white shirt, white trousers and sneakers which were covered in blood.

Suddenly a voice cried out asking, "Do you remember this, do you remember what you did or have you forgotten. How long do you wish to run; how long do you wish to hide from the dark past you left."
