Chapter 12 - Laws of the Unknown

After dinner, Kira introduced the white-haired girl as Evelyn. Mira and Lina washed the dishes, while Evelyn, Kira, and Raven took Azure to the living room to finally talk.

Kira sat on a chair, Evelyn took the one beside her, and Raven claimed the couch. Azure sat on a chair facing the three.

Kira took a deep breath before starting. "I'll begin by explaining this world and its rules, why people are brought from Earth here, and then I'll explain who our sensei is and what you'll gain as her student, alright?"

Azure nodded, waiting for her to continue.

"First, we were not transported completely," she said. "You can say our souls or consciousness were transported, while our bodies are still on Earth as they are. The flow of time is different also from Earth to here. You can stay here for more than a week, but about only an hour will pass on Earth." She took a deep breath before she continued.

"The number of humans from Earth chosen to stay with their consciousness and come and go from this world is only 10 million. Ordinary people are entered by luck, but there is no danger to their lives. Even if they die, their consciousness will return to Earth, and it will be like daydreams, and they will not remember what happened."

Raven continued after her, "As for the 10 million chosen, they can enter and exit with ease. They will remember everything that happens, and they have many benefits, including the difference in time flow. Although anything related to the 'body' will not change, everything you can learn can be transferred to Earth…" Her tone changed to very cold. "But every benefit has a price."

She was silent a little to give a chance for Azure to understand before she continued. "The 10 million are in a state like battle royale games. The smaller your number becomes, the more advantages you take. I think you noticed the System's existence. The System takes care of people whose numbers are 10,000 or less, gives them advantages not only in this world but also on Earth. The only way to reach those numbers is by killing a person whose number is less than yours and taking their number."

Eve, is the System she's talking about the one that attacked you before? Azure asked Eve, feeling a bit lost.

[Eve believes so.]

Azure looked at Raven. "How can the System affect Earth?"

Evelyn answered in a slightly cold and calm tone, "No one knows. The System has no authority on Earth, but it still gives very high advantages. No one knows how." They were silent after that to give Azure a chance to understand the situation.

Azure closed his eye to think. After about half a minute, he opened his eye again.

"So, people were brought from Earth to here to be in a survival game? Then what does the System do to people who refuse to play by its laws?" he said in a slightly cold tone.

Kira answered, "It does nothing. It seems the System doesn't care if you want to play its game or not. You could say it takes the matter as an experiment."

Azure's expression changed a little before he calmed himself quickly.

Kira noticed the change in his expressions. "I can feel what you feel now. I also felt the same feeling when I heard this the first time, but there is no danger to people from our world. Those who die will only forget this world's existence and will not be affected in any way."

Azure stared at her, narrowing his eyes. His voice became cold. "And why didn't you explain this first?"

Evelyn answered coldly, "To see your reaction."

Azure laughed coldly. "So, if I understand the matter well, there are 10 million people currently in an unknown world fighting each other to get advantages. No one of the 10 million knows why they were transported, how they get those advantages, or the identity of this world…"

Kira took a deep breath before she answered, "We didn't mean to be offensive to you, but we needed to see your reaction. As for this world, it has its own citizens, but they don't know anything about us."

Raven smiled. "But most people from Earth think they are just data, think they are inside a game and those characters are like 'non-player characters,' so it doesn't matter if they are killed or deceived."

Lycarius became angry from her words. "Say this in front of my damned face, and I will tell you who is the NPC, you damned girl!"

Vladimir did not speak, but his expression was cold, and he listened with great focus.

What is your opinion, Eve? Azure looked at the ground, thinking silently.

[Eve does not have any opinion.]

That didn't help! He sighed before he looked at Kira. "You spoke before that my memory loss can have a relation to magic in this world?"

Kira smiled. "Yes, but first I will explain to you the laws of this world."

"There are two types of energy in this world, and they are magical energy and inner power. Magical energy is like mana and lets you control nature's elements. Inner power also controls nature's elements, but the difference is it will strengthen you physically and its main goal is developing and changing the body's cells to suit the element. For example, if we assume a person has the lightning element as inner power, this will transform his body to become with time a body with lightning's power and will have lightning's speed also. While magical energy will only make you control the element and shape it, like creating a lightning storm, but your body will remain ordinary—except certain spells that strengthen the body—and there is also special magic like seals and curses. I think that maybe what happened to you has a relation to an injury from a curse."

Wasn't the main problem due to damage in brain cells? Azure felt greater confusion.

[That is on Earth, but Eve thinks that maybe there is magic or a curse that affects the person in both worlds. she explained a little earlier that chosen people will not forget what happens, and this means any psychological or mental injuries will remain.]

Hmm, reasonable. He nodded to Kira to continue.

She took a breath before she continued. "Every person can have an affinity for one element only. There are geniuses who have an affinity for two elements, but their cases are very rare, and a person with an affinity for three elements, their appearance rate in the entire world is less than 1%. Other than that, usually you must choose between magical power or inner power because it is difficult to train in both, and it will be a waste of time. Choosing one path is better than trying to go in two paths."

Azure nodded with his head, then thought of an important question. "So, what makes you really believe that my memory loss problem is due to a curse?"

Raven answered in a serious tone. "Because of me."

Azure looked at her with confusion.

She removed the necklace on her neck and held it in her hand. "This necklace can sense any nearby curses. As soon as it feels a curse's presence, it starts to glow."

Azure was shocked. He remembered that the necklace was glowing when he met Raven the first time. He examined the necklace closely and found it dull. "But it doesn't glow now."

Raven laughed with mockery. "Do you want to explode the room again? I sealed it temporarily."

Azure stared at her coldly. Raven's smile disappeared. "What?"

He answered coldly, "So you told them what happened!"

She opened her mouth and was about to answer, but she remembered that he was beaten to not talk about the matter…

Azure opened his mouth in anger. His face was already twisting with anger as he stared at her. "So if you were going to tell them anyway, why did I suffer from the beating! I was close to being part of the wall."

Raven didn't answer, looking away. Kira also was silent with embarrassment.

Azure closed his eyes and clasped his hands in front of his face, taking a deep breath, trying to calm himself.

"Fine, Fine, it doesn't matter. Let's focus on what is important now. You said that your necklace confirmed there is a curse on me. Is there a way to discover details about it or solve it?"

Raven answered while looking away. "There are several ways to discover the curse. The best is that we go to the official building of hunters and mercenaries."
