Chapter 19 - TOA 19: Misunderstanding

In the Toaruverse, magicians didn't just use spells to cast magic that ordinary people could understand, like water bullets or fireballs... attacks commonly seen in novels, movies, and games. They also had some counterintuitive combat methods.

One such method was using spells to grant their bodies immense resilience, such as temporarily enhancing their physical form to withstand supersonic speeds without disintegrating, then engaging in high-speed melee combat.

Naturally, during this process, they would incorporate other spells to execute a variety of attacks.

Combined with the protective spells on their bodies, unless they encountered some freakish ability that could nullify their spells on contact, they could generally put on quite an impressive combat display.

This was the so-called sonic battle!

But Morpheus, at this moment, had the power of the four great angels amplifying him. Even though he could only utilize a small portion of it, it was enough to enhance all the spells enveloping him, upgrading his sonic battle directly into a supersonic battle... and a precision supersonic battle at that!

Morpheus maintained a speed two to three times that of sound, darting out from under the giants' attacks and charging toward the nearest one.

Facing Morpheus' assault, the giants hurriedly launched their own attacks, trying to intercept this incoming figure. Ideally, they would swing their massive clubs for a brutal, close encounter with the high-speed target!

At such high speeds, a collision would surely deliver a forceful baptism to this little guy!

In that moment, the club swung by the giant broke the sound barrier, whipping up a fierce storm and producing a piercing sonic boom.

Even without touching the ground, the wind from the club tore the earth apart in an instant!

Without using any magical power, the sheer physical strength of the blow could make even the Titans, renowned for their power, marvel!

And because the speed was so fast, dodging or turning would naturally be inconvenient, making the trajectory easier to predict. So, the Gigantes believed this strike would surely hit the scurrying little rat.

But Morpheus' figure turned at the very moment he was about to collide with the club!

He executed a near-ninety-degree turn, dodging the strike, then swiftly made another ninety-degree pivot to return to his original path!

The most terrifying part was that his speed didn't even drop, continuing at a supersonic pace. In that moment, after evading the first strike, he was already in front of his target.

"Heat and moisture."

A short incantation, but it was a spell. The instant Morpheus uttered it, the yellow dagger circling him burst into radiant light. The angel named Raphael, flapping its wings, guided this power!

Around Morpheus, a gust of wind appeared, followed by an enormous number of compressed air blades, sharp as throwing knives, shooting forward at incredible speed.

These were blades formed entirely of air, slicing through the air. So sharp were they that a boulder in their path was cut into over a dozen pieces in an instant, each cut surface impossibly smooth!

The wind blades didn't slow after hitting the rock; they continued at their original speed, all striking the giant's ankle.

In that moment, the giant's ankle was pierced by the wind blades, leaving wounds that went clean through... you could even see the scenery behind!

The giant, unable to endure the pain of the strike, bent over. At that instant, several wind blades shot upward, blasting into the giant's head as it lowered.

Then, more immensely powerful wind blades erupted from Morpheus as the center, flying outward. In the blink of an eye, dozens of giants' bodies were injured by the blades. Some were hit in vital areas and died instantly, while others were heavily or lightly wounded, only to be finished off by the gods who had snapped back to action.

In that moment, of the original hundred-plus giants, over forty had died. Though more than half remained, the battlefield looked noticeably less crowded.

Heracles roared, charging at a particularly tall giant. He raised his weapon and smashed it down with all his might.

Heracles, with his renowned strength, unleashed his full power on the giant's body, forcing the towering figure to stagger back a step.

Zeus raised his thunder spear, lightning roaring as it struck the giant, who instinctively raised its arm to block the terrifying bolt.

In that moment, Heracles grabbed his bow, aimed at the giant's head, and shot an arrow clean through its skull.

Almost simultaneously, the lightning crashed down, engulfing the wounded giant.

It had to be said, once they reacted, Zeus and Heracles worked well together, taking down one of the giants' leaders in their coordinated assault.

Athena seized her chance as well. She grabbed a giant's head, and from behind her, a massive snake emerged, biting into the giant's chest where Morpheus' wind blades had pierced. Venom flowed ceaselessly from the wound, ravaging the giant's body.

At the same time, Athena thrust a spear with her other hand into the giant's abdomen. Under the dual assault, the giant showed a pained expression, but it was futile.

Athena's strength was immense, and under the interference of pain, the giant couldn't even break free from her grip, forced to endure her relentless destruction of its body.

Hades concealed himself, acting like an assassin. He hid in the shadows, then seized an opportunity to deliver a lethal strike into a giant's body before vanishing again to seek his next chance.

As for Poseidon, he didn't use his authority to summon tsunamis or the like. Instead, he crudely lifted a mountain the giants had brought and smashed it directly at them!

He was attacking with pure physical force. In terms of effectiveness, this was perhaps the most direct and impactful among the gods on the scene, as Poseidon didn't even need to target those already weakened by Heracles or Morpheus.

If the first smash didn't break their defenses? Then a second would do!

As long as he kept smashing, they'd break eventually!

What should have been an intense war now felt like a skirmish. The enemies that should have terrified the gods now seemed weak.

And all of this was due to Morpheus' seemingly inexhaustible magical attacks!

From the moment Morpheus joined the fight to its end, about half an hour passed. When the last giant's head was severed and its body completely destroyed, the crisis originating from Sefar was finally resolved.

This battle also allowed Morpheus to gather a wealth of data.

"As expected, even though this world hasn't fully embraced the spread of Christianity, I can still use the corresponding spells. The power I'm drawing on seems to be the Christianity I understand, not this world's Christian system.

"If, as I understand it, the world stems from mystery, and the universe exists within the world, then that explains my current situation. Since this universe is enveloped by a greater world, the powers contained in that world can be used directly here…

"And they're completely unrestricted by time!

"But it could also be due to other reasons, like some special authority within this world that allows me to use these spells. That's possible, too, since I bear Yog-Sothoth's magical imprint, granting me the ability to manipulate space and time."

Morpheus pondered silently, several guesses flashing through his mind before he suppressed them.

At that moment, a voice rang out, accompanied by the sharp sound of something cutting through the air.

Morpheus turned to look and saw Medea flying toward him, her expression a mix of joy and reproach. She lunged at him, catching him off guard, and he could only steady himself to catch her firmly.

Then he heard her say, clearly displeased, "Don't scare me like that again!"

Her words were filled with worry. Thinking back to how he'd recklessly taken the giants' attacks head-on, scaring Medea, he realized it was indeed his fault. Feeling the girl's tight embrace and her still-trembling body, Morpheus could only sigh helplessly and say softly, "Sorry, it won't happen again."

At that, the girl issued a threat.

"If there's a next time, I'll bite you!"
