Chapter 1 - Chapter One

Emily sat on the swings, her feet scraping against the ground as she pumped her legs to go higher.

She loved watching the world from up high, feeling the wind in her hair and the sun on her face. Her friends were nearby, chatting and laughing, but Emily felt content in her own little world.

As she swung higher, Emily caught glimpses of her friends playing tag on the grass. Tyra's infectious laughter carried on the breeze, while Henry's competitive spirit shone through as he chased after Champion. Zayn sat on the sidelines, watching with a quiet smile. Emily noticed Henry's brand-new sneakers, a reminder of the wealth that set him apart from the rest of them. Yet, despite their differences, Henry's kind heart made him a beloved friend.

As the sun began to set, casting a warm orange glow over the playground, Emily's friends reluctantly gathered their belongings. Henry, being the gentleman he was, offered them all a ride home in his sleek, black car. 'Hop in, guys!' he said with a smile, opening the doors for his friends. Tyra slid into the front seat, while Champion and Zayn piled into the back with Emily.

As Emily settled into the backseat, she couldn't help but feel a flutter in her chest. She had always admired Henry from afar, and being in such close proximity to him made her heart skip a beat. She tried to brush off the feeling, focusing instead on the conversation flowing easily among her friends.

As they rode home, Tyra couldn't help but notice the way Henry smiled at Emily, and a pang of jealousy fluttered in her chest. She had secretly harbored feelings for Henry for a while, but he seemed oblivious to her affections. Meanwhile, Zayn watched Tyra with a calm, observant gaze, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he smiled to himself. Champion, ever the jokester, kept everyone laughing with his witty remarks and silly impressions.

Champion's antics had everyone in stitches, and even Henry couldn't help but chuckle at his friend's silly impressions.

'Dude, you're such a goofball,' Henry said, shaking his head in amusement. Champion grinned, pleased with himself. 'Hey, someone's got to keep things interesting around here.'

As the last of their friends were dropped off, Zayn found himself alone with Henry in the car. 'Hey, man, can I talk to you about something?' Zayn asked, his voice a little hesitant. Henry nodded, intrigued. 'What's up?' Zayn took a deep breath. 'I've had feelings for Tyra since 6th grade. I've been watching her for years, but I don't know if she feels the same way.' Henry's expression turned thoughtful, and he nodded slowly. 'I had no idea, Zayn. But I think she's noticed you too.'

Zayn's heart skipped a beat at Henry's words. He felt a mix of emotions - excitement at the possibility that Tyra might feel the same way, and nervousness about revealing his true feelings. 'Do you think she'd...like me back?' Zayn asked, trying to keep his voice steady. Henry smiled reassuringly. 'I think she's a great person, Zayn. You should talk to her.'

As Zayn walked home from Henry's car, he couldn't shake off the feeling of uncertainty. _What if Tyra didn't feel the same way? What if she laughed or worse, felt sorry for him?_ Zayn's mind spiralled with worst-case scenarios, and he began to doubt his decision to confide in Henry. _'Maybe I should just keep it to myself,'_ he thought, feeling his anxiety spike.

Zayn nodded, feeling a surge of determination. But as the moments ticked by, doubts crept in. _What if Tyra didn't feel the same way? What if she laughed or thought I was weird?_ Zayn's mind began to whirl with worst-case scenarios. 'What if I'm just a friend to her?' he wondered, his anxiety growing.

But he remembered Henry's kind eyes that put him at ease and remembered Henry saying _'Tyra's a great person, Zayn. Be yourself, and you'll be fine.'_

As they went their separate ways home the previous day, each friend looked forward to their usual morning routine. Every morning, they'd ride their bicycles to pick each other up from school. Henry, however, wasn't much of a cyclist, largely due to his upbringing and his dad's preferences. Champion, or Champ as his friends affectionately called him, always made sure to pick up Emily, whose parents hadn't been able to afford her a bike since 3rd grade. Tyra and Zayn would typically join later, while Henry, living in his out-of-town mansion, was always the last to arrive.

Given the limited phone accessibility back then, coordination wasn't always easy, especially for Emily.

The next day, Zayn left earlier, following Champion to school without waiting for Tyra, his nerves getting the better of him. When they arrived at Emily's house to pick her up, she wasn't there, and they assumed she'd already headed to school.

Tyra is still in class when Angel approaches her, sneering, "So your dummy of a bestie didn't come to school today?" Angel laughs with her friends, not letting Tyra get a word in edgewise. Tyra rolls her eyes and says, 'Angel, I don't have time for your drama this morning.'

But Angel's words strike a chord when she mentions that Emily was supposedly seen at school, according to the boys. Tyra's confusion turns to concern, and she quickly rushes out of school to meet up with the others.

When she finds them, she shares what Angel told her, and they're all shocked, wondering where Emily might have gone. Tyra turns to Zayn and asks,

"Wait a minute, why didn't you look for me before heading to school?" Zayn tries to respond, but his nervousness gets the better of him, and he's about to stammer out an answer when Henry intervenes.

Henry says, "I think I know where Emily is." Zayn breathes a silent thank you, relieved that Henry's statement has shifted the attention away from his own nervousness.

Henry's words spark a mix of curiosity and concern among the group. "What do you mean?" Tyra asks, her brow furrowed with worry. Champion leans in, "Yeah, Henry, where do you think she is?"

Henry's expression turns thoughtful, and he says,

"I saw her walking towards the park near school earlier today. Maybe she needed some fresh air or wanted to clear her head?"

The group's eyes widen, and they exchange worried glances. Zayn's nervousness momentarily forgotten, he asks, "Do you think she's okay?"

They followed Henry in his car, expecting to find Emily in the park. However, when they arrived, she wasn't there. Henry's expression turned thoughtful, and he seemed to be recalling something. He thought harder, remembering that Emily often went to their old treehouse whenever she was feeling down. The treehouse held special meaning, as it was a spot meant just for him and Emily, two friends who had known each other long before the rest of the group had met.

Without saying a word, Henry got back into the car, and the others followed him, bombarding him with questions. "Where are we going now?" "Do you think Emily's okay?" But Henry remained silent, his eyes fixed on the road ahead, until they finally arrived at the treehouse.

As they arrive at the treehouse, Henry's car comes to a stop. The group exchanges curious glances, still wondering where Emily might be. Henry gets out of the car, his eyes fixed on the old treehouse in the distance. Without a word, he starts walking towards it.

The others follow, their questions and concerns momentarily silenced. As they approach the treehouse, they notice the door is slightly ajar. Henry pushes it open, and their eyes adjust to the dim light inside.

And then, they see Emily, sitting in the corner, her eyes red from crying. She looks up, surprised to see them.

The group's faces soften as they take in Emily's tear-stained face. Tyra's expression is etched with concern, while Champion's usual jovial demeanor is replaced with a gentle smile. Zayn looks relieved, his nervousness forgotten in the face of Emily's distress.

"Emily," Tyra whispers, taking a step forward. "We were so worried about you." Emily's eyes well up with tears again, and she nods, her voice barely above a whisper.

"I'm sorry," she says, her words trembling.

The group gathers around her, their movements gentle, as if not to startle her further. Henry sits down beside her, his presence calming. "We're here for you, Em," he says softly.

"Whatever's going on, we'll figure it out together."

The group's warmth and support envelop Emily, and she feels a sense of comfort wash over her.
