Chapter 6: Goal
Finally reaching level ten, Xiao Fei's face was filled with excitement.
The next morning, Xiao Fei went to the teaching office and asked the teachers for the school's help in hunting his first spirit ring. Xiao Fei had several plans for his first spirit ring.
First, it had to be a fire-attributed spirit beast, ideally over 400 years old. This could be increased, but preferably no more than 600 years.
After six months of training, Xiao Fei felt his body should be able to withstand more than a hundred or two hundred years. If that didn't work out, his Qilin Arm could also withstand some of the spirit ring's power. After all, the fundamental advantage of a true spirit is its ability to absorb spirit rings beyond its age limit to evolve.
Finally, there was the matter of a spirit beast's bloodline. The best, of course, was a phoenix-bloodlined spirit beast.
However, phoenix-bloodlined spirit beasts were extremely rare on the Douluo Continent, even rarer than dragons, and were mostly flying, making them extremely difficult to hunt. Small families simply couldn't possibly hunt one, let alone a commoner like Xiao Fei.
Notting Academy was a spirit master academy, and its teachers and leaders were all spirit masters. The Dean of Studies was a Soul Master, and the Headmaster was a Level 42 Weapon Soul Master, both well-known figures within Notting City.
The academy regularly organized hunting expeditions to the nearby Soul Beast Forest, though these were primarily for low-level soul rings.
The Dean of Studies informed Xiaofei that the school's preparations would take some time. Xiaofei also mentioned his requirements: a soul ring around 400 years old and fire-attributed. The Dean of Studies said he needed to consider this.
Wang Xiaofei, with his innate soul power at Level 8, had already become a quasi-Soul Master in less than six months, and was destined to become a Soul Master before graduation. He was also incredibly diligent and a role model for his dedication.
The Headmaster convened a faculty meeting and agreed to meet his requirements. Of course, in this case, the Headmaster decided to personally take charge. After all, it was a favor for a future leader.
A few days later, the academy's soul hunt arrived. Six students, including Xiaofei, went hunting. The other five were mostly seniors.
The Headmaster led the team, along with the Dean of Studies, a Level 36 Soul Master with a Black Bear spirit. Two other teachers accompanied them, making it essentially the school's best lineup.
A group of ten people, in two carriages, journeyed majestically to the nearby Soul Hunting Forest.
After leaving their carriages at the outskirts, the entrance to the forest was filled with clamor. "Need a warrant? Bring one!"
"We have all the warrants, need an assistant!" "We accept all kinds of soul hunting jobs, satisfaction guaranteed." It was like a small market.
The dean took the opportunity to teach the students, "The Soul Hunting Forest is full of dangers, many caused by soul beasts, but even more by humans.
There are no rules, and many fight each other to seize a high-quality soul beast. As a result, many die in the Soul Hunting Forest every year, and even more go missing."
Once inside, the teachers were noticeably different. The principal, a teacher, and six students formed the center. The Dean of Studies, Wu Changqing, led the way, scouting ahead, while another teacher backed up to block the way, preventing sneak attacks from soul beasts or humans. It was a fairly well-trained group.
Entering the Soul Hunting Forest felt like entering a completely different world, with towering trees everywhere, only enough ground for walking, and a variety of plants densely covering the forest's perimeter.
From time to time, a couple of small snakes or other critters would emerge. Xiao Fei felt this place was even scarier than the animal world of his previous life.
The afternoon went relatively smoothly, with two students finding suitable spirit rings, both just over a hundred years old. At night, the principal set up several tents. Several teachers took turns keeping watch. Teacher Wu also took out some powdered substance and scattered it around. "This is Titan Ape feces; it will scare away most spirit beasts."
The next day, perhaps out of luck, they encountered a group of Fiery Lions. The largest of them was over three meters long and, according to the principal's analysis, was estimated to be over 400 years old.
After analyzing the situation, the group finally turned to Xiaofei. Xiaofei pondered and finally made a decision:
"Principal, let's go with this Flame Lion. I'm in good physical condition, so I should be able to handle it."
The principal lowered his head in silence, then touched Xiaofei several times before saying, "You're in good physical condition, so I should be able to handle it."
The group set a large trap near the Flame Master, and Teacher Wu attacked the Master. The Flame Lion, visibly enraged by the attack, erupted in flames, and attacked Teacher Wu like a fire unicorn.
The principal seized the opportunity to sneak attack the Flame Master. After a fierce struggle and distraction, the Flame Lion fell into the trap, causing the other Flame Lions to scatter. Finally, after a series of attacks, the Flame Lion collapsed in a pool of blood.
The principal nodded to Xiaofei. Xiaofei stabbed the Flame Lion's eyes with his long sword. Then, a yellow spirit ring appeared above the Flame Lion's corpse. Following the principal's instructions, Xiaofei summoned his own martial spirit and channeled it into the Fire Phoenix.
A powerful surge of soul energy, carrying with it an intense flame, rushed towards Xiao Fei, like a blazing shadow. Xiao Fei was instantly overcome with agony, feeling as if his entire body were about to explode.
Half an hour later, the pain intensified, and Xiao Fei felt as if his body was about to explode. The principal observed Xiao Fei's anguished expression, then carefully examined the Flame Lion's corpse.
"Oh no! This isn't a Flame Lion! This is a Flame Lion King, a mutation of an ordinary Flame Master. It's over 500 years old, almost 600. Xiao Fei is in danger!"
Seeing the principal's expression, the others expressed concern.
Xiao Fei felt a burning sensation within him, gritting his teeth to endure it, feeling as if his body would collapse at any moment. Could this be the consequence of forcibly absorbing a high-age soul ring?
At this critical moment, Xiao Fei's right hand began to change, actively absorbing some of the flames and energy, and his entire arm felt as if it were being roasted on fire. Xiao Fei's body gradually began to adapt to the discomfort.
An hour later, the pressure on Xiao Fei finally began to dissipate, and he breathed a sigh of relief. He had finally absorbed the spirit ring, and this stage had finally been passed. He opened his eyes, and several teachers and classmates also breathed a sigh of relief.
The principal quickly asked, "Xiao Fei, how are you feeling now? Are you feeling any discomfort? I'm so sorry, I misjudged this time. This Flame Lion King is almost 600 years old."
Xiao Fei suddenly realized why absorbing the spirit ring this time was so difficult. His body felt so uncomfortable. If his right hand hadn't absorbed some of the energy, he might not have been able to pass this stage. Xiao Fei closed his eyes and carefully felt his body.
He felt a sense of unimpeded flow throughout his body, and his meridians felt indescribably comfortable. His right hand, in particular, felt much stronger. However, his right palm felt a little numb, as if the bones had shifted.
Xiao Fei opened his eyes, glanced at the people around him, and then lowered his head in thought. He breathed a sigh of relief and said, "Principal, I feel very good now."
"Excellent, let's get out of here first. We still have a few people's spirit rings to hunt," the principal said.
So the group continued to move in other directions according to their plan, maintaining the same formation as before.
