Chapter 3 - EPISODE 3

Kalu stood outside the press conference room, adjusting his suit and tie. Bolaji, the Public Relations Officer of Ikorodu City FC, approached him with a warm smile. "Coach, ready to face the media?" he asked, nodding reassuringly. Kalu nodded, and Bolaji led him into the crowded room.

Kalu Eze stepped up to the podium, adjusting his suit as he surveyed the crowded press conference room. He took a deep breath and began, "Good morning, everyone. I'm honored to be here in your presence today as the interim coach of Ikorodu City FC. I'm aware of the weight of expectation and the legacy of this great club."

The journalists leaned forward, pens poised, as Kalu continued, "My focus will be on building a strong team dynamic, leveraging our players' strengths, and adapting to the ever-evolving landscape of the sport. Above all, the team will entertain the world with attractive football. Let's have some fun!"

Bolaji cleared his throat and spoke up, "Alright, does anyone have a question for the Coach?" As he asked the question, hands were raised.

The first journalist to be called out was a well-known sports reporter, Femi. "Coach, you mentioned building a strong team dynamic. How do you plan to address the issue of underperforming players, and do you have any plans to reshuffle the squad?"

Kalu leaned forward, a thoughtful expression on his face. "We'll be taking a close look at each player's performance and identifying areas for improvement. We'll work with the players to address any issues and make informed decisions about the team's composition moving forward."

Another journalist, Ronke, raised her hand during the press conference. Bolaji gestured to her, signaling that she could ask her question.

"Coach, you mentioned earlier that the team aims to entertain the world with attractive football. Is that really the team's goal? Strong teams like Eyimba, Kano Pillars, and Sunshine stars are aiming to win titles this upcoming season. Can you clarify what you mean?" Ronke inquired.

"Well, I said we will enjoy the team's performances in the 3067/3068 season, but I didn't mention titles. That's where trust comes in. I'm simply saying you can trust the team and the project," Coach Kalu responded, his conviction unwavering.

Another journalist, Ayo from The Sports Gazette, stood up and posed his question. "Coach, considering the team's financial struggles in recent seasons, how do you plan to achieve your goals of attractive football and building a strong team dynamic without sufficient resources? Should we expect new transfers?"

"Yes, thank you, Ayo, for that question," Coach Kalu began. "Financial constraints are indeed a challenge in the beautiful game, but we're exploring creative solutions to maximize our resources. We're not just looking at bringing in new players; we're also focusing on developing our existing talent and finding ways to make our squad more efficient. This is where the academy players come in. We'll also be working closely with the club's management to identify areas where we can optimize our spending and make the most of our budget."

Bolaji, the Public Relations Officer, wrapped up the press conference by announcing, "Alright, that's it for today. See you next time."

Coach Kalu Eze and Bolaji exited the conference room together, smiling and nodding to the journalists as they made their way through the crowd.

The sun beat down on the training pitch as the Ikorodu City FC players gathered, their preseason preparations already in full swing. A month lay ahead before the start of the 3067/3068 season, and the team was eager to get into top gear.

"Guys!" Emmanuel, the team's 34 year-old captain, called out, "while we wait for the coach, let's get some jogging in!"

The team chorused in agreement, their voices echoing across the pitch as they began to warm up.

As they jogged, Akilu's gaze drifted to the other end of the pitch, where the B team was gathered. "Guys, what's the B team doing here?" he asked, his curiosity piqued.

Emmanuel followed Akilu's gaze and shrugged. "I guess we'll just have to find out from them."

The team approached the B team, and Bolu, the goalkeeper, called out to Umana, the B team's goalkeeper. "Umana, what are you guys doing here?"

Umana's response was straightforward. "Coach Kalu said we should gather here this morning and wait for him."

Before anyone could ask further questions, Moses, the team's 28 year-old center forward and youngest player, yelled out, "Everyone, Coach is here!"

The team turned to see Coach Kalu approaching, a purposeful stride in his step.

"Speak of the devil," Akilu muttered.

As Coach Kalu joined the group, the team greeted him with a chorus of hellos.

"Good morning, everyone, and welcome back," Coach Kalu began, his voice carrying a sense of urgency. "The time to get serious is now!" His gaze roamed across the team before settling on Akilu, one of the key players. "Akilu, I need to speak with you after this training session," he said, a hint of mystery in his tone.

Akilu responded with a neutral expression, nodding in agreement. "Understood, Coach."

Coach Kalu scanned the team once more, his eyes conveying the gravity of the situation. "Today, we'll kick off with a 10-minute match between the A team and the B team," he announced, surprising the players as their eyes widened in shock.

Emmanuel, the team's captain, raised his hand, seeking permission to speak. Coach Kalu gave him a nod of acknowledgment.

"Coach, with all due respect, the new season is only a month away. Is it wise to have a match against the B team instead of preparing for our preseason tour?" he inquired, voicing the concerns of the team.

Coach Kalu paused for a moment, considering his response. "Captain Emmanuel, you bring up a valid point," he began, his gaze meeting Emmanuel's. "However, I have something to share that aligns with your concern. There will be no preseason tour this year."

The team was taken aback, their faces reflecting their shock at the revelation.

"Yes, unfortunately, due to financial constraints, we will not be having a preseason tour for the team this year," Coach Kalu elaborated. "Instead, we will have a single preseason friendly match, and it will be against Sunshine stars, the reigning Nigerian Premier League Champions."

Akilu let out a soft whistle, pondering the implications of this challenging matchup. "Sunshine stars? That's going to be a tough match, even if it is just a friendly," he commented, his voice tinged with apprehension.

Coach Kalu offered a knowing smile, unfazed by the looming challenge. "This is precisely why we'll be facing the B team in a match today," he declared, his gaze sweeping across the assembled players. "As their former coach, I believe the B team is stronger than the A team... unless, of course, you can prove me wrong."

The A team exchanged determined glances, their eyes blazing with a renewed sense of purpose. Coach Kalu's words had lit a fire within them, and they were prepared to prove their worth against not only the B team, but any opponent they might face in the upcoming season.

The A and B teams took their positions on the pitch, their determination and resolve evident in their eyes.

The A team found themselves in an unanticipated predicament as the game commenced, their possession disrupted by the B team's aggressive high press defensive strategy. The B team players applied relentless pressure, forcing mistakes and seizing control of the ball.

Amidst the chaos, a promising opportunity emerged for the B team. Isaac Oru, a nimble young talent, received a well-timed pass from Daniel, the B team's adept right-winger. However, Emmanuel's tenacious defense halted Isaac's momentum, conceding a free kick to the B team in the process.

Isaac, unfazed by the challenge, confidently stepped up to take the free kick. Three A team players hastily formed a defensive wall in front of him, while the remaining teammates congregated in the box, preparing for the impending cross. Isaac masterfully curled the ball into the box, where it found its target, landing squarely on the chest of Agogo, the B team's stalwart center defender. With a commanding volley, Agogo unleashed a blistering shot that ripped through the net, putting the B team ahead with a 1-0 lead.

The A team reeled from the unexpected turn of events, their frustration palpable. Emmanuel's voice rang out across the pitch, urging his teammates to regroup and refocus. "Come on, guys! Is this how we plan to play this season?!" he exclaimed, the weight of their lackluster performance settling heavily on their shoulders.

The game resumed, the A team eager to regain control. However, the B team refused to relent, their high press technique proving effective in quickly winning back possession and launching a series of calculated counter-attacks. Isaac Oru once again showcased his skill, threading a perfectly-weighted through pass into the box. Samuel, the B team's center forward, sprang into action, chasing down the ball and beating Bolu, the A team's goalkeeper, with a deft flick of his foot. The ball sailed over Bolu's outstretched hands and into the back of the net, extending the B team's lead to a commanding 2-0.

The match persisted, with the A team grappling to regain their foothold and claw their way back into contention. The B team refused to let up, their relentless high press creating an abundance of scoring opportunities. In a flash, Akilu lost possession, and the tide of play turned chaotic as both teams began to misplace passes.

As the ball landed between Isaac Oru and Emmanuel, Isaac seized his chance. With a flick of his foot, he expertly dragged the ball backward, then spun 360 degrees, maintaining control of the ball throughout the maneuver. Emmanuel stumbled, unable to predict the agility of Isaac's move.

Finding himself one-on-one with Bolu, the A team's goalkeeper, Isaac wasted no time. With a skillful swing of his kicking leg behind his standing leg, he executed a rabona, sending the ball sailing over Bolu and into the net. The B team's lead had now extended to a staggering 3-0.

Emmanuel's eyes widened in awe, scarcely believing Isaac's display of skill. "Who is this kid? I can't believe he pulled a roulette on me and even scored with a rabona," he thought, his admiration for the 16-year-old prodigy growing by the minute.

Moments later, Coach Kalu's whistle pierced the air, signaling the end of the match and cementing the B team's resounding 3-0 victory. Frustration permeated the A team, with Akilu's disappointment particularly palpable.

"Akilu!" Coach Kalu called out, his voice firm yet empathetic.

"Yes, Coach," Akilu responded, his tone betraying his dejection.

"Come see me in my office immediately," Coach Kalu instructed, turning to make his way off the pitch.

Akilu's footsteps echoed down the corridor as he approached Coach Kalu's office. Hesitantly, he knocked on the door, only to hear Coach Kalu's voice from within. "Come in! It's unlocked!"

Upon entering and closing the door behind him, Akilu spoke up. "You wanted to see me, sir?"

Coach Kalu gestured to a seat in front of him. "Please, have a seat."

As Akilu sat down, Coach Kalu steeled himself for the difficult conversation ahead. "I'll get straight to the point," he began, his tone firm yet tinged with sympathy. "I'm sorry to say this, but your time with the team has come to an end."

Akilu's eyes widened in disbelief, his shock evident. "Sir, what do you mean?"

Coach Kalu leaned forward, explaining his decision. "You're 37 years old, Akilu. It's only natural that you can't maintain the same level of performance you had 10 years ago. This decision is based on the team's current needs, and it's not a reflection of your potential. My advice is to search for a new team that can benefit from your experience and skills."

Akilu abruptly rose from his seat, a mix of shock and disappointment etched on his face as he struggled to come to terms with the reality of his situation.
