"DXD: Multiverse Journey"Chapter 260: The Rampage of the Throne of Thunder

15,000 meters above Tengu City, aboard the Fraxinus.

"Commander, the sphere's spiritual energy is steadily declining. At this rate, it should vanish completely in about two minutes."

Kotori, legs crossed and a lollipop tucked between her lips, lounged in the command chair. "Is that so? An invisible sphere that stays invisible right to the end, huh."

No one noticed the shadow beneath Reine's eyes, or the tension tightening her features as she stared at the data.

Meanwhile, Shuo and Tohka reached the final stop of their date: the park where they'd first met.

They lingered there for a long while, the air growing soft and nostalgic. Eventually, Tohka rubbed her grumbling stomach and gave him a plaintive look.

"Shuo, can we go home? The food outside was great, but… I really want to eat your cooking tonight."

He smiled. "That so? Then I'll make extra—all your favorites."

"Yay! I love you the most, Shuo! Mwah!" Tohka squealed, planting a kiss on his cheek.

Shuo touched the spot, smiling helplessly. Some things never changed—Tohka was still the same pure-hearted, sweetly naïve, bottomless-pit Tohka as ever.

Honestly, only one other existence could rival her appetite—the one they called the King's Stomach.

He squeezed her hand, about to turn back toward home, when he caught sight of a girl standing dozens of meters away.

Long golden hair, tied in a single side ponytail with a white flower-shaped ribbon. Her features were elegant, almost regal, with luminous pink eyes and a quiet, innocent air. A pink schoolbag rested on her shoulder, and she carried herself with the grace of a young heiress—a world apart from everyone else in the park.

Mayuri.

The two of them simply stared at each other, motionless, as if time had stopped.

Tohka, puzzled by Shuo's sudden distraction, followed his gaze—but saw nothing.

"Shuo, what are you looking at?"

He blinked, caught off guard. "Ah… it's nothing."

But the truth dawned on him: of course. Tohka couldn't see Mayuri.

Mayuri was a being born from the Spirits' jealousy, their longing to have the one they loved all to themselves—a vessel of negative emotions given form. In this state, only Shuo could perceive her. Which meant… he was the one all the Spirits loved most.

That's why, whenever Mayuri appeared, she sought him out—watching in silence. No one else could see her.

"Tohka, can you wait for me a minute? There's something I need to do."

"Mm, okay."

Shuo approached Mayuri, stopping a few paces away. Awe and determination mingled in his chest.

This time, he swore, he wouldn't let the tragedy of the original story play out. He had the power now to give Mayuri a future—just like Tohka and the others.

"Is there something you want to say to me, Mayuri?" he asked gently.

Mayuri's expression flickered when he spoke her name. She didn't understand—how did he know her?

After a moment's hesitation, she voiced the question in her heart. "Why do you…?"

"Why do I know your name?" Shuo finished for her, a soft smile playing at his lips.

Mayuri blinked, then nodded.

He hesitated, then stepped forward and took her hand. She stiffened in surprise.

"Because you were born from the Spirits' power. I know everything about you. Just as I love you, Mayuri, you love me too—don't you?"

Mayuri stared at him, stunned—as if he'd shattered everything she understood about herself. That couldn't be. She was just a cluster of spirit energy, a machine for judgment, devoid of emotion.

As she fell silent, Origami, Kurumi, and the others arrived nearby, drawn by the strange scene.

"What's Shuo doing?" Origami wondered aloud.

"Astonishment. He appears to be talking to himself," Yuzuru observed.

"Maybe he's just exhausted from all these dates?" Natsumi guessed.

None of them could see Mayuri.

Shuo ignored the chatter, his focus locked on the girl before him.

At last, Mayuri met his gaze, pink eyes steady. "My existence is only to measure whether you are worthy. I have no feelings. You're mistaken."

She hesitated, voice dropping. "I… I'll be gone soon. But before I disappear, I just… wanted to talk to you."

As she spoke, motes of golden light began to swirl around her, coalescing into radiant streams. In an instant, the air blazed with gold—Mayuri's Spirit dress had awakened.

Four angelic wings unfurled behind her, red spheres and wheel-like ornaments gleaming at her chest. Her black dress was trimmed in gold, lion-headed guards at her knees. She hovered above the ground, the image of a celestial maiden.

Flashes of memory—Shuo's laughter, the Spirits' smiles—tumbled through her mind, stirring something unfamiliar and bittersweet.

Mayuri hovered higher, her gaze impossibly gentle. "Goodbye, Shuo. Forever."

But before her words could settle, the sky behind her erupted in a blinding, electric light.

All eyes turned upward.

"What's happening?"

"What's that thing in the sky?!"

"Amazing. It's so bright!"

The previously invisible black sphere now revealed itself, spinning wildly, colors roiling across its surface like living liquid. With a sound like shattering glass, the sphere expanded—four massive angel wings unfurling, a golden tail streaming below.

Its name was Kerubiel—the Throne of Thunder.

The moment she saw it, Mayuri's face drained of color. Her voice trembled. "Kerubiel?! Why is it here?!"

But the angel paid her no heed. Blue diamond sigils spiraled across its surface, a crimson eye opening at its core. Power gathered—a torrent of blue lightning lanced downward.

In a single instant, the park below was obliterated, the shockwave ripping through the trees and leaving nothing but scorched earth.

Up above, chaos erupted aboard the Fraxinus as alarms blared and screens flashed red.

The world had changed in a heartbeat.
