Agnes opened her mouth to lash out at her husband, but considered his blood pressure and decided against it. She inhaled calmly as she replied.
"No dear. I didn't call her. I only went to the market and came back after I was done shopping."
"Then why hasn't she returned home?" Jonathan demanded angrily as if his wife were a soothsayer. "Has she decided not to honour my call just as she's stubbornly refused to divorce that stranger or remove that bastard child she's carrying? Do I mean nothing to her anymore?" His voice shook with grief.
"Please dear, don't talk like that." Agnes pushed her own anger aside and stepped closer to her husband, taking his trembling hands into hers.
"Our daughter loves us. She would never treat us in that manner. She may have refused to divorce her fake husband out of rage, or even commit an abortion, which is against our religious faith. But she would never refuse an invitation from us. We are still her parents."
