"Putting Kingpin in prison is harder than killing him."
Matt's tone was flat. As an old adversary of Kingpin, he was well aware of Kingpin's true identity.
Wilson Fisk, a real estate tycoon born and bred in Hell's Kitchen, an energy magnate, involved in various industries, was an extremely successful entrepreneur.
Moreover, his henchmen permeated the underworld, with Kingpin being the source of almost 40% of criminal activities in America. Destroying a drug processing plant, stopping a smuggling case, or catching some gang members could all offend Kingpin's hegemony.
Especially in New York, he could be said to have his hand in everything. Minor crimes were useless, and serious crimes that could sentence Kingpin couldn't find any evidence. This was the difficulty.
"You may not know that Bullseye, who you sent to the police station, will be released tonight."
Matt faced Anton with his unseeing eyes behind his sunglasses, and slowly said, "The police station can't convict him. Even though his identity as an assassin is well-known, no one can find evidence of his murders... This is Kingpin's power."
"Bullseye? I can catch him once, and I can catch him a second time." Anton sneered.
"So, this is your no-killing rule?" Matt asked. "Wouldn't it be easier just to kill him than to send him to prison?"
From that sentence, it was clear Matt knew something about Batman.
"Killing is a line I won't cross, but for my enemies, living only brings them more pain," Anton said.
"Even if you put Kingpin in jail, there will be another Kingpin," Matt countered. "What's your plan?"
Anton said, "The High Table is my partner. After Kingpin falls, the High Table will take over Hell's Kitchen. The High Table is an organization that plays by the rules. If you know anything about them, you know that Hell's Kitchen will be at least no more corrupt than it was under Kingpin."
"You're right."
Matt was silent for a moment. Out of hatred for Kingpin, he preferred to see another organization rise in Hell's Kitchen, even if it meant Kingpin's downfall. He stood up and extended his hand to Anton. "It's a deal."
"A deal."
Anton shook his hand, a smile on his face.
After establishing their partnership, the two spoke for a while longer, and Anton gleaned a great deal of information about Kingpin from Matt.
What surprised him most was the source of Kingpin's weapons: Stark Industries.
Matt said, "Tony Stark probably doesn't care about these revenues. But Stark Industries is a weapons giant, and Tony Stark is a whimsical playboy. He only cares about inventing, not managing, and a lot of corruption has festered internally. I only know that most of Kingpin's weapons come from Stark Industries, but I haven't found out who's trading with him. I can only confirm that it must be a high-ranking figure."
"Stark Industries..."
Anton rubbed his chin, thinking of someone.
He had originally planned to leave this person for Tony to deal with later, but it seemed he might have to solve the problem himself before Tony Stark returned.
"Do you have any leads?"
Matt heard the subtle shift in Anton's tone and his mind raced.
"That's right, I do have a lead or two."
Anton nodded, speaking frankly, "Obadiah Stane, the CEO of Stark Industries, that old man isn't a good person. But I'm not sure if he's the one trading weapons with Kingpin."
"Obadiah Stane, if it really is him, it would make sense."
Matt nodded.
"Leave this matter to me. As for you, keep looking for evidence of Kingpin's crimes," Anton instructed. "When we find the evidence, that's the best time to strike at Kingpin. Otherwise, it's all for nothing."
"Understood."
Matt said, "Stay in touch."
"Alright."
Anton then said goodbye to Matt.
He left Hell's Kitchen, took out his phone, and saw a message from Eddie, so he met Eddie outside Hell's Kitchen.
"How's it going on your end?"
Anton greeted Eddie.
"I met an old friend, Ben Urich. He's in the same line of work as me, working for another media outlet, and he's passionate about fighting crime." Eddie laughed. "Coincidentally, he's also been investigating Kingpin recently."
"Did he find anything?" Anton asked.
"The findings are much bigger than we imagined." Eddie grinned. "You have to double my bonus this time."
"Come on, you're already a millionaire!"
...
The next day.
The Daily Bugle fired the first shot.
[Kingpin: The Underworld Emperor and His Underground Kingdom]
The headline and content of the front page were the real information written overnight by Eddie and the Daily Bugle staff.
It revealed Kingpin's true identity: Wilson Fisk, a wealthy real estate developer and energy tycoon. In addition, it also involved investments in multiple fields, making him one of the top tier of the wealthy.
Everyone was surprised that this guy was actually involved in the underworld.
However, although the newspaper did not have any specific charges or evidence of Kingpin's crimes, Kingpin's background was thoroughly exposed.
Wilson Fisk grew up in Hell's Kitchen. His father, a small-time mob boss, was killed in a gang war.
For the young, defiant, and self-aware Wilson, his father's death didn't bring much sadness. However, it did give him a deeper understanding of the law of the jungle. From then on, he harbored the ambition to build his own "criminal empire."
Driven by this goal, Wilson joined a New York gang, committing all sorts of atrocities. He eventually rose to become the head of the gang. But this wasn't enough for him; the nearly insane Wilson used his naturally evil mind to slaughter rival gangs, finally gaining control of the entire New York, and even the entire American, underworld.
Wilson's "criminal empire" gradually turned from a dream into reality.
From then on, he hid his true identity and took the name "Kingpin."
During the day, Wilson Fisk was a successful New York entrepreneur and philanthropist; at night, Kingpin was the underground emperor of New York and even the entire United States, with absolute power and authority.
It's quite an inspiring story.
The biggest problem is that Kingpin went down a one-way road.
With the Daily Bugle's current credibility, and everyone knowing about the close relationship between Batman and the Daily Bugle, people didn't doubt the report's authenticity.
All-knowing netizens even found out that Bullseye, one of the people Batman arrested the other night, was one of Kingpin's subordinates.
This showed that Batman and Kingpin were already at odds.
In addition, the resourceful netizens also learned that Bullseye had been released without charge because the police department couldn't produce any evidence.
This shocked the netizens who knew the situation, and the New York City Police Department was trending on the hot search because of it.
George Stacy, as the New York City Police Commissioner, bore the brunt of the criticism, shouldering a huge amount of blame and pressure.
"Damn it!!"
He gritted his teeth.
At the same time, sharing the same expression as George Stacy was Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, located in his office at the Fisk Corporation building in Manhattan.
"Is this how you handle things for me?"
Kingpin glared at the subordinate in front of him, clenching his fist, wanting nothing more than to slap the man dead.
"I, this… I didn't expect him to dare to do this!"
Wesley trembled.
Happy New Year to everyone, as the New Year is approaching.
