As Colt left the garage, the cold air smacked him a good one. Dang. It was like breathing knives, it was so chilly. He increased his pace down the sidewalk, thinking about Earl Blume. His lie detector hadn't gone off once during his conversation with the bus driver. They weren't at a place in the investigation where they could cross anyone off the suspect list, but he'd definitely move Earl down to the bottom. He wondered how the interviews with Ginnie and Billy had gone. A lot of folks didn't give enough credit to the sensibilities of kids. It was a shame when adults assumed children didn't have the common sense God gave a goat.
Colt made it to the front of the elementary school and got buzzed inside by Peg Stiller. Her eyes were red from crying, but she still managed a smile for him. "How're you doing, Deputy Ashford?"
"All right, I guess, considering the circumstances. Is the Sheriff with the Principal?"
